And for anyone thinking about applying for a bursary, I hope that you’ll take the leap. As Cinderella would say: A dream is a wish your heart makes. I still have long-term struggles with my health, but I wanted to say a big thank you the best way I can, and that’s with my words. So, THANK YOU! You helped at least two of my wishes come true and have given me many more that I now want to breathe into life. Who knows what the future will bring? But with the support of my family, friends and now the RNA, I’m excited to have my writing spark back, and while I might not get a HEA, I am most certainly, Happy For Now. Fiction forecast BY KATHLEEN WHYMAN

Psychological thrillers have dominated the book charts for the last few years, but this looks set to change, with more interest in up-lit, rom coms, historical fiction and sagas. In the first of a three part series on trends, Kathleen Whyman asks the publishers what they think the next big thing will be.

irror, mirror on the wall, which storyline will appeal to all? Unfortunately not many of us have access toM a magic mirror (if you have, please contact me. It’d make a great feature for RM and I’d like to apply to be your business partner/best friend/stalker). Even without one though, we’ve all been aware of the huge trend in psychological thrillers and domestic noir, kick-started by Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. While this trend isn’t likely to go away – it’s reflected in our tv viewing with The Bodyguard and Killing Eve being stand out hits of 2018 – readers are now looking for something more uplifting, probably as an escape from our unsettling political landscape. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman is the novel that almost all the publishers quoted as being the big hit of 2018 (and still selling), sparking a surge in the trend up-lit – uplifting fiction. Here they reveal what other trends they see emerging.

What have we done over the past couple of years to raise the profile and prestige of romantic fiction? We’ve met with publishers and other industry professionals to discuss ways in which we can work together more closely for the benefit of our members. For example, we’ve gained increased sponsorship for our awards from Simon & Schuster, Sapere, Goldsboro Books and Libertá. Publishers have also sponsored some of our talks and parties, and a generous investment in bursaries and prizes from our members, especially our President Katie Fforde, has opened up further opportunities for writers to join the NWS or attend conference. We’ve held joint events with the academic community, with the Society of Authors and the London Book Fair. It’s not all about looking outwards, though. Social media and online activities can make this easier, but can also bring with it issues of online etiquette which we have wrestled with over the past few years. Then there is the cost of running events in an economic environment where so many authors’ incomes are being squeezed and we have to ensure we’re giving members value for money. ... continued Nicola interviewing the legendary Barbara Erskine membership in order to show how varied romantic fiction can be and celebrate it in all its forms. This is a priority going forwards and I’m very excited that Alison May and the new committee will be taking up their roles after the AGM as they have the expertise, enthusiasm and commitment to take the RNA forward. With the RNA’s Diamond anniversary approaching it’s a great time to look back to all the amazing work that past committees have done and the achievements of our members over the last 60 years. It’s also an exciting time to be looking at what is to come and I for one am looking forward to it. I’ve had a wonderful, busy and hugely enjoyable time as Chair, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and wish you all good luck and continued success as the RNA moves into its next and very exciting phase.
