A Short History Regarding the Taxonomy and Systematic Researches of Platygastroidea (Hymenoptera)

Carol I, nr. 11, 700506, Iasi, Romania. 2 Troldhøjvej 3, DK-3310 Ølsted, Denmark, e-mail: [email protected],dk Corresponding author: [email protected] This paper presents an overview of the most important and best-known works that were the subject of taxonomy or systematics Platygastroidea superfamily. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part of the research surprised the early period can be placed throughout the XIXth century between Latreille and Dalla Torre. Before this period, references about platygastrids and scelionids were made by Linnaeus and Schrank, they are the ones who described the first platygastrid and scelionid respectively. In this the first period work entomologists as: Haliday, Westwood, Walker, Forster, Ashmead, Thomson, Howard, etc., the result of their work being the description of 699 scelionids species which are found quoted in Dalla Torre's catalogue. The second part of the paper is devoted to early 20th century. This vibrant work is marked by the work of two great entomologists: Kieffer and Dodd. In this period one publish the first and only global monograph of platygastrids and scelionids until now. In this monograph are twice the number of species than in Dalla Torre's catalogue which shows the magnitude of the systematic research of those moments. The third part of the paper refers to the late 20th and early 21st century. -

Cheadle (1962-1977) of developing UCSB into an outdoor classroom has become a reality through the Campus Flora Project. Dr. Cheadle recognized the Education 5 special opportunity and favorable circumstances of this botanically rich and unique environment and he Biodiversity took a personal interest in collecting and suggesting plant specimens for the campus. 8 Collections Field Notes 9 Under the direction of two very talented and dedicated greenhouse managers in the Biology Department, Will Beittel (1954-1977) and John Bleck (1978-1992), the campus was planted with an incredibly diverse Research 12 News and Events 15 and unusual array of plants, creating an education tool as well as an environment of great beauty. Getting Involved 18 The Campus Flora Project had its beginnings in 1983 when Sherri Whitmore, a graduate student with Dr. Faculty and Staff 20 Dale Smith, compiled a comprehensive list of the plants on campus for teaching and research. Requests and inquiries concerning reproduction and rights should be addressed to: [email protected] FLORA OF AUSTRALIA The nine families in this volume of the Flora of Australia are Iridaceae, Aloeaceae, Agavaceae, Xanthorrhoeaceae, Hanguan- aceae, Taccaceae, Stemonaceae, Smilacaceae and Dioscoreaceae. The Xanthorrhoeaceae has the largest representation with 10 genera and 99 species. Most are endemic with a few species of Lomandra and Romnalda extending to neighbouring islands. The family includes the spectacular blackboys and grass-trees. The Iridaceae is largely represented by naturalised species with 52 of the 78 species being introduced. Many of the introductions are ornamentals and several have become serious weeds. Patersonia is the largest genus with all 17 species endemic. Some of these are cultivated as ornamentals. The Dioscoreaccae is a family of economic significance, particularly in the old world tropics where some species are cultivated or collected for their tubers and bulbils. In Australia there are 5 species, one of which is a recent introduction. The endemic and native species, commonly known as yams, are traditionally eaten by the Aborigines. -

Just such a chance presents itself: on April 18, 2009, Lubomír Masner cel- ebrated his 75th birthday. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, I asked a number of colleagues to contribute papers for this issue of ZooKeys. Th eir enthusiastic response follows. But fi rst, I present a brief summarization of the career and scientifi c contribu- tions of Dr. Masner. Lubo earned the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Master of Science in Entomology at Charles University in Prague in 1952 and 1957 respectively. He received his doctorate in Entomology from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1962.
