Die Syrischen Und Sudanatolischen Gottheiten DIE SYRISCHEN UND SUDANATOLISCHEN GOTTHEITEN Die" Herrin des Palastes" Der Name Ninegal, "Herrin (des) Palast(es)", ist in der Mitte des dritten J ahrtausends ein Epitheton der Inanna. Der Kult der Gottin ist seit der neusumerischen Zeit im Norden Babyloniens und in Syrien verbreitet. Ihre bedeutendste Kultstadt ist Qatna. 1 In einer Opferliste aus Mari erscheint sie in der Reihen­ folge Ningursanga "Herrin (des) Berg(es)", Ninegal und Ningal, gefolgt von Dagan, dem "Konig (von) Terqa". 2 Wahrscheinlich gelangte Ninegal zusammen mit den ebenfalls dort verehrten Got­ tinnen - der Inanna-Hypostase "Herrin der Steppe", der Korn­ gottin Nisaba und der Gazbaya - vom mittleren Euphrat nach Qatna, Kummanni,3 U garit und tJ:attusa. Bereits in althethitischer Zeit begegnet sie im hethitischen Pan­ theon:4 In der althethitischen Tafel des KI.LAM-Festrituals bildet sie ein Paar mit Zababa (und tJ:alzukki), 5 und in dem Zeremoniell des achten Tages des AN.TAtJ:.SUMsAR-Festrituals erscheint sie zusammen mit der Sonnengottin (von Arinna) und Mezzulla.6 Ihrer Herkunft vom mittleren Euphrat entsprechend fiihrt sie in der GroBreichszeit - in den Opferlisten des Kultes der tJ:ebat und des Tessop von tJ:alab - das Epitheton Bitganu , ,ganaische Tochter",7 das verselbstandigt auch neben Ninegal stehen kann.8 Da es sich bei bi)tu "Tochter" urn eine assyrische Form handelt, 1 D.O. Mit ihr scheint die in Emar belegte Gottin ,,[1j:]anana des Palastes" identisch zu sein.9 In den Opferlisten fur den Kult des Tdsop (von 1j:atti?) ist Ninegal dem Tdsop als Konkubine zugeordnet. lO Die Opferlisten fUhren sie als "ALAM 'Bild' Ninegal" (der althethitischen Tradi­ tion folgend) neben Ugur saumat(a)ri auf. 11 In den Opferlisten fUr den Kult der Sa(w)oska sowie im (b)isuwa-Festritual findet sich ent­ sprechend die Folge ,,Dzalmi ('Bild') Ninegal", 12 der in den Opfer­ listen fiir den Kult der 1j:ebat das (hurritische) Wortpaar Tagi­ Tagidu, "die schone Tagidu" zu entsprechen scheint. In einem Gotterfigurenarrangement "sitzt sie am Thron des Tessop."13 In der Schwurgotterliste des Staatsvertrages Suppiluliumas mit Sattiwaza von Mittani ist sie in der Gruppe der hethitischen Gotter hinter Enlil und Ninlil und in der Gruppe der hurritischen Gotter hinter dem Kornmadchen Sala, der Parhedra des Kumarbi, pla­ ziert. 14 In U garit wird ihr im Friihjahrsmonat 1j:iyari auf einer Schale Erde dargebracht, denn sie solI die Fruchtbarkeit der Boden segnen. 15 Die syrische GoUin flebat Die bedeutenste, iiber J ahrtausende hindurch in Nordsyrien und in Siidanatolien verehrte Gottin ist 1j:ebat. 16 Der Name ist erstmals im Pantheon von Ebla in der Form Dba-a-ba-du belegt.17 In den 9 Emar VI.3 1986, Nr. 373:98. 10 Akkadisch esertu: 1473/u Rs. Abstract The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary.

The authors incorporate recent scholarship from various disciplines into their analysis of textual and visual sources, representations in diverse media, theological strategies, typologies, and the place of image in religion and cult over a span of three millennia. Different types of syncretism (fusion, fission, mutation) resulted in transformation and homogenization of goddesses’ roles and functions. The processes of syncretism (a useful heuristic tool for studying the evolution of religions and the attendant political and social changes) and gender switch were facilitated by the fluidity of personality due to multiple or similar divine roles and functions. Few goddesses kept their identity throughout the millennia. Individuality is rare in the iconography of goddesses while visual emphasis is on repetition of generic divine figures (hieros typos) in order to retain recognizability of divinity, where femininity is of secondary significance. The book demonstrates that goddesses were never marginalized or extrinsic and thattheir continuous presence in texts, cult images, rituals, and worship throughout Mesopotamian history is testimony to their powerful numinous impact. This richly illustrated book is the first in-depth analysis of goddesses and the changes they underwent from the earliest visual and textual evidence around 3000 BCE to the end of ancient Mesopotamian civilization in the Seleucid period.

It could operate as an administrative center, as a center of learning, as a place of jurisdiction, as a center for healing, and as an economic institution, as indicated in both textual and archaeological sources. All these functions involved numerous and diverse personnel and generated interaction with the surrounding world, thereby turning the temple into the center of urban life. Because the temple fulfilled all these functions in addition to housing the divinity, it acquired agency in its own right. Thus, temple, city, and divinity could merge into concerted action. CONQUEST AND SETTLEMENT 1. Structure of Joshua This book is basically a straight narrative (1-11; 22-24), incorporating in its latter half a list of vanquished kings (12) and especially the allotments of tribal territory (13-19), including cities of refuge and for priests and Levites (20-21). There is no over- [p. 6] arching formal framework to the book — simply a narrative incorporating lists. 2. Formation and role of Joshua a. Formation, i. Within the narratives themselves, there is at first sight very little that is self-evidently later than the period following on the passing of 'the elders who outlived Joshua' (Jos. 24: 31; Jdg. 2: 7; cf. 10).2 Thus, it is not unnatural to suppose that records of the events and lists — written, oral, or both — were directly utilized by the unnamed author of Joshua.3 The existence of written data at this juncture is evidenced in the use of writing by Joshua and his aides noted in the book itself.
