Abstract The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary. -

Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2013 Goddesses in Context: On Divine Powers, Roles, Relationships and Gender in Mesopotamian Textual and Visual Sources Asher-Greve, Julia M ; Westenholz, Joan Goodnick Abstract: Goddesses in Context examines from different perspectives some of the most challenging themes in Mesopotamian religion such as gender switch of deities and changes of the status, roles and functions of goddesses. The authors incorporate recent scholarship from various disciplines into their analysis of textual and visual sources, representations in diverse media, theological strategies, typologies, and the place of image in religion and cult over a span of three millennia. Different types of syncretism (fusion, fission, mutation) resulted in transformation and homogenization of goddesses’ roles and functions. The processes of syncretism (a useful heuristic tool for studying the evolution of religions and the attendant political and social changes) and gender switch were facilitated by the fluidity of personality due to multiple or similar divine roles and functions. Few goddesses kept their identity throughout the millennia. Individuality is rare in the iconography of goddesses while visual emphasis is on repetition of generic divine figures (hieros typos) in order to retain recognizability of divinity, where femininity is of secondary significance. The book demonstrates that goddesses were never marginalized or extrinsic and thattheir continuous presence in texts, cult images, rituals, and worship throughout Mesopotamian history is testimony to their powerful numinous impact. This richly illustrated book is the first in-depth analysis of goddesses and the changes they underwent from the earliest visual and textual evidence around 3000 BCE to the end of ancient Mesopotamian civilization in the Seleucid period. -

The Series of Oxford Editions of Cuneiform Inscriptions which begins with this volume has been planned primarily for the purpose of publishing the tablets and inscribed monuments presented to the University of Oxford bv Mr. H. WELD- BLUNDELL of Queenfs College. The material contained in the earlier volumes has been obtained by Mr. WELD-BLUNDELL by purchase during his first visit to Mesopotamia in the spring to 1921 and later through the valuable assistance of Captain COOK of the Ministry of Awkaf in 13aodad. The munificent patron of the university then decided to send out an expedition to excavate in Mesopotamia and after a prolonged conference with the writer he decided to excavate Kish, the ancient capital of BabyloniaL, for the University of Oxford. In view of the heavy expense involved in such a project; for the ruins of Kish consist in two great mounds, Tel-el-Ah.aimer and Umm Gharra, which revert to the oldest period of human history, we gladly accepted the generous offer of the Director of the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago), under sanction of his Board of Trustees, to form a joint expedition. The philological material which shall accrue to Oxford and the Field Museum will be published in this Series. -

RESUMEN “Las cartas de Mari y el profetismo bíblico: Similitudes y diferencias – Parte II”— Este artículo es la segunda parte de un estudio de dos partes. En la primera parte, se desarrolló la descripción del profetismo bíblico, su naturaleza y características, con el fin de comprender los conceptos básicos de los fenómenos proféticos. Se describió la terminología utili- zada por las Escrituras para descubrir la naturaleza de los profetas bí- blicos. En este segundo artículo, se sigue el mismo procedimiento con las cartas de Mari y se ofrece una comparación entre estos dos registros para establecer su relación, similitudes y diferencias. Como resultado de esta evaluación, se establece que aunque existen algunas similitudes entre estos dos grupos, existen diferencias sustanciales. El profetismo bíblico se considera único y no encuentra su origen en ningún otro fenómeno antiguo sino en Dios mismo. In the first part, the description of biblical prophetism, its nature, and features, were de- veloped in order to understand the basics of the prophetic phenomena. The terminology used by the Scriptures was described in order to find out the nature of the biblical prophets. In this second article, the same is done with Mari letters and a comparison is offered between these two records in order to establish their relationship, similarities, and differ- ences. As the result of this assessment, it is established that though there are some similarities between these two groups, there are substantial dif- ferences. -

THE ROYAL PALACE AT URKESH AND THE DAUGHTER OF NARAM-SIN Giorgio BUCCELLATI & Marilyn KELLY-BUCCELLATI UCLA, USA Abstract A gauge of how significant were the results of the 121h season of excavations at Tell Mozan may easily be found inta comparison between what can now be said about Urkesh and what could be said before our excavations. It was common opinion that Urkesh was a petty, peripheral kingdom that emerged following the fall of the dynasty of Akkad. This common opinion must now be radically revised: Urkesh was a major political center at least by the time ofNaram-Sin, so much so that his daughter waspresent in Urkesh, most likely as its queen. She also postdates the royal building of king Tupkish and queen Uqnitum, which we know now to have been a full-fledged palace, one of the largest and best preserved in ancient Syro- Mesopotamia. It appears then that Urkesh was a leading player in the geo-political scene of third millennium Syria, perhaps allied through a dynastic marriage with the vely king who boasts to have destroyed Ebla; and that even before that time the local endan had suficient political and economic power to build a palace of major proportions. Literary Motifs and Iconographic Identifications

Literary motifs and iconographic identifications Marilyn Kelly-Buccellati Identificationof the subjects of Syro-Mesopotamian art is often difficult due to the general lack of the appropriate iconographic specificity needed to be certain of the connection between scenes and texts.1 A great deal has been written on this topic especially as it relates to the identification of mythological figures in texts for which we have only later sources.2 While some scholars feel strongly that it is impos¬ sible to make this type of connection, others, with a great deal of caution, think that it may be potentially useful insome instances to attempt a connection between literary figures or even entire scenes with visual evidence.3 An alternative line of approach centers on the correlation of iconography and historical events - as for example, with the recent critical study of a stone mold interpreted to refer to the campaigns of Naram-Sin in the eastern mountain regions.4 In this article Iam attempting to establish an association between the iconography of a plaque from the Urkesh excavations dating to the second half of the third millennium with themes known from the epic of Gilgamesh because Iconsider that there is sufficient nar¬ rative and visual clarity to link the two. My methodological premise is that we should not be looking for literal illustrations of specific episodes, as if the artist had been commissioned to accompany words with pictures. Rather, Ithink we can assume broad thematic correlations, whereby the artist would be, yes, inspired by a story, but would simply re-elaborate its motifs according to his own visual vocabulary. -

The paper argues in favor of such a high date for the first composition of the epic as a literary whole, and situates it in the context of the Akkadian imperial experiment. 3 THE MORTAL KINGS OF UR: A SHORT CENTURY OF DIVINE RULE IN ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA PIOTR MICHALOWSKI, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN Assyriologists are at a disadvantage whenever the subject of divine kingship comes up. The issue is not an old one, but it has its lingering ghosts, James Frazer and Edward Evans Prichard, and it has its favorite haunting ground, the continent of Africa and the island of Mad agascar. Ever since Frazer delineated the problem in 1890, the focus of investigation has been on Africa, and the definition has encompassed three central components: duality, regicide, and the mediating role of the king. Of the three, regicide has been the most contentious issue, but it is one that is hardly important outside of the Africanist debates. Moreover, as Kasja Ekholm Friedman (1985: 250) has written, some have viewed divine kingship as "an autonomous sym bolic structure that can only be understood in terms of its own internal symbolic structure." Writing about the Lower Congo (Friedman 1985: 251), she undertook to demonstrate that "it is a historical product which has undergone transformations connected to the general structural change that has turned Africa into an underdeveloped periphery of the West." Here, I follow her example and attempt to locate the eruptions of early Mesopotamian divine kingship as historically defined phenomena, rather than as moments in a developmental trajectory of an autonomous symbolic structure. Most studies of the early history of Mesopotamian kingship concentrate on the develop ment of a specific figure in text and art; the underlying notions are social evolutionary, and the methodology is philological, often relying on etymology and the study of the occurrence and history of lexical labels, as summarized well in a recent article by Nicole Brisch (forth coming). -

Rappelons-en l’objectif : appliquer aux religions et aux mythologies des principes lexicographiques aussi rigoureux que possible. Les sources sont constituées pour l’essentiel par des études spécialisées imprimées ou disponibles en ligne. Le Web n’est utilisé qu’après recoupement et vérification des informations. Les pages qui suivent couvrent plus particulièrement les domaines suivants : Anatolie, Syrie-Phénicie-Palestine, Mésopotamie, Élam, Perse, Arabie pré-islamique . La complexité des données nous a imposé, sur plusieurs points, un effort de précision et de clarification. La multiplication des sources consultées ne permet pas seulement des confirmations, elle débouche également sur des contradictions qui compliquent singulièrement la description (comme il arrive pour Belzébuth , voir ci-dessous). Il a fallu tenir compte aussi des cas de syncrétisme et des correspondances entre les divinités des différents domaines ou sous-domaines. Le cas le plus évident est celui de la Mésopotamie, avec l’évolution qui a conduit du panthéon sumérien au panthéon babylonien ( An est devenu Anu , Inanna est devenue Ishtar ).
