“St Kliment Ohridski” University – Bitola (UKLO) is the second oldest state Univer- sity in the Republic of Macedonia and the most important institution in the area of higher education in the SW region of our country. UKLO is seated in Bitola, but some of the Univer- sity higher-education and scientific-research units are located in several centers different than Bitola, like, , , , Veles and Kichevo. The act of formal establishment of the University was on April 25, 1979. On December 8, 1994, the University was given the name of St Kliment Ohridski, a patron saint of education and educators. This day is every year celebrated as the University patron’s day with a rich academic content marking the re- sults achieved throughout the year.

UKLO offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctoral degrees in a variety of study areas.

TYPES OF STUDY PROGRAMMES OFFERED

The academic offer of UKLO is organized in three cycles: First cycle study programmes (Bachelor), academic or professional - three-year programmes – total of 180 ECTS - four-year programmes – total of 240 ECTS Second cycle study programmes (Master) - one-year programmes – total of 60 ECTS - two-year programme – total of 120 ECTS (the sum of the above two cycles equals 300 ECTS) Third cycle study programmes (PhD) - three-year Doctoral studies of 180 ECTS UNIVERSITY MEMBERS

Foreign citizens interested in studying at “St. Kliment Ohridski” University – Bitola (UKLO) enroll under the admission criteria of the public competition announced by UKLO.

Foreign citizens apply for admission at the Rectorate of UKLO (International Relations Of- fice) and are not subject to taking any entrance exams.

When applying for the Faculty of Education, candidates are requested to take an aptitude test, prior to enrollment.

Necessary documents (application):

Application form (obtained at the Faculty or Rectorate)

Copy of passport

Original diploma for completed previous education (secondary; foreign higher or col- lege) and a notarized official translation

Birth certificate and a notarized official translation

Decision on recognition of foreign educational credentials, issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia

Health report of a recent check-up and AIDS/HIV test

Macedonian Language Certificate – test conducted at the Faculty of Education (for for- eign citizens interested in studying a programme delivered in Macedonian).

English Language Certificate – test conducted at the Faculty of Education (for foreign citizens interested in studying a programme delivered in English)

The IRO staff transfers the application packages of foreign candidates, via regular post, to the appropriate UKLO unit where the actual enrollment takes place.

The required documents for enrollment involve receipt for paid tuition fee.

The tuition fee for foreign students is €1000, except for the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences – Bitola and Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality – Ohrid, where foreign students are to pay €800 per academic year. Tuition fee for all UKLO units is payable in two equal installments, at the beginning of the respective semester.

Unless otherwise organized, foreign students cover their board and lodging expenses by themselves.

NOMINATIONS & APPLICATION

Nominations for incoming students are accepted by:

- June 1 – for mobility in the course of the winter semester/whole academic year

- November 30 – for mobility in the course of summer semester

All nominations should be directed to Faculty (departmental) coordinator (see list below) and the International Relations Office ([email protected] & nur- [email protected])

The nomination should include information such as: full name, field and level of study, aca- demic year/semester and e-mail address of the nominee.

The application form should be supported by 2 copies of Learning Agreement, Certificate of English proficiency and a photocopy of a photo page of the passport.

Foreign students are advised to check whether they are re- quired a visa to enter Mace- donia and this can be done at the nearest consulate or em- bassy of the Republic of Mace- donia (list of consulates and embassies available at www.mnr.gov.mk).

ERASMUS students do not need an entrance visa for Ma- cedonia; they only need to regulate their stay in accor- dance with their status as inter- national students.

All foreign students should contact the Internal Affairs Department (www.mvr.gov.mk) in Bitola and submit the application for issuing temporary residence permit in our country upon arrival.

ACCOMMODATION

The students may be accommodated in the student dorm “Kocho Racin” – Bitola, if there are any vacancies, since the student dorm is pretty limited in capacity. Students can find accommodation in certain private owned housing facilities exclusively meant for students, as an alternative to the Dorm, and of course, private, furnished apart- ments that can be rented for approx. 150-200 EUR/month. The IRO can provide advice regarding the private accommodation at reasonable price, but does not offer or provide it. MACEDONIAN NATIONAL GRADING SYSTEM

Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan coun- try of mountains, lakes and ancient towns with Ottoman and European architecture. The capital, Skopje, is known for its sprawling Old Bazaar quarter and historic buildings turned muse- ums, including the National Gallery of Macedonia, housed in a 15th-century Turkish bath complex. The southern city Ohrid, on a lake of the same name, has a medieval townscape and hilltop castle.

Faculties have their Internet facilities and a large number of internet cafes are scattered around the cities. GSM Service: The prepaid packages for mobile phones are available at the authorized shops of the three companies providing GSM services: T-Mobile, VIP and Lycamobile but also at the supermarkets and tobacconists.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT BITOLA

Bitola, historically known by several alternative names, such as Monastir or Manastıri, is a city in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia. Today it is an administrative, cultural, industrial, commercial, and educational centre. located in the southern part of the valley, surrounded by the and Nidže mountains, only 14 km north of the Medžitlija-Níki border crossing with Greece.

The history of the city can be traced far back in the history as it was founded as in the middle of the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. Over the centuries, it grew to be an important junction connecting the south of the with the and Central . During the Ottoman period, the city in line with Salonica, were the two governing cities of Otto- man . In this period, Bitola earned the epithet "the city of consuls", as many European countries had their consulates established in Bitola. WEATHER IN MACEDONIA

The climate in Macedonia features hot sum- mers and cold winters. Average summer monthly temperature is 23C/73F, but a sweater may be needed in the evenings. Fall tends to be dry in the country. The winters are very cold (average monthly temperature is 2C/35F), often drizzly, snowy and windy, espe- cially in the central parts and the north. Snowfalls can be heavy in winter, sometimes causing traffic delays.

Bitola weather: The months of May, June, July and September have nice weather with a agreeable average temperatures. On the average, the warmest are June, July and August. On average, the coolest month is January. November is the wettest month. MACEDONIAN CUISINE

Macedonian cuisine reflects Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences and shares charac- teristics of other Balkan cuisines. Some of the most famous and delicious Macedonian dishes are: Burek A delicious and savoury puff pastry. Some typical fillings for burek include feta cheese, spinach, minced meat and/or potatoes. Musaka Musaka is a delicious potato-based dish. It is a layered dish, mainly consisting of sliced potatoes. In between each tender and ooey-gooey layer lies a bed full of eggplant, onion, ground meat and an assortment of veggies. The top layer is usually finished with a beautiful egg-yolk glaze, giving it a wonderfully golden colour and crispy texture. Tavce Gravce Tavce gravce (literally meaning beans cooked in a skillet) is a thick and chunky bean stew that is cooked in the traditional Ma- cedonian earthenware. Tavce gravce has a variety of different spices and vegeta- bles that enhance its flavour, including fresh Macedonian paprika. Sarma (cabbage/grape leaves rolls) Minced meat, onion, paprika and chopped veggies compose the filling of this dish. Sarma is typically served with a few heaping spoonfuls of plain yogurt. Kebapi Grilled minced meat composed into the shape of a sausage. Onions, vegeta (which is a very popular mixture of Macedonian herbs) and pa- prika are what give this dish its savoury flavour. Kebapi are usually served with freshly baked flatbread and kajmak, which is similar to sour cream. Ajvar Ajvar is a delicious relish made of roasted red bell peppers, paprika and garlic. It is usually combined with white cheese and warm, fresh oven- baked bread.
