They are primary vehicles for public dialogue about emotional, intellectual and aesthetic values, providing a subjective platform for human connection in our global society. An International art fair plays an important role in the building and sharing of cultural values. It creates opportunities for global connections and highlights the diverse interests of artists, collectors, dealers, museums, scholars and the public. It is with great excitement and pride that I am presenting the 9th annual Toronto International Art Fair - Art Toronto 2008. With an impressive line up of national and international galleries alongside an exciting roster of cultural partners and participants, TIAF has become an important and vital event on the Canadian cultural calendar. -

For Immediate Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUNDARAM TAGORE CHELSEA/NEW YORK PRESENTS NEW PORTRAITS BY AMERICAN PAINTER LEE WAISLER Exhibition dates: October 17–November 16, 2013 Opening cocktail reception: Thursday, October 17, 6–8 pm Double Einstein, 2013, acrylic and wood on canvas, 40 x 60 inches New York, September 23, 2013—Sundaram Tagore Gallery is pleased to present new works by Lee Waisler. Lee Waisler is a Los Angeles-based artist who paints arresting portraits of iconic figures using a rich variety of materials. For this exhibition, Waisler presents a global group of individuals from diverse disciplines, eras and origins. Among his subjects are renowned artists, literary giants and Hollywood luminaries such as Frida Kahlo, Gertrude Stein and Charlie Chaplin, alongside influential figures of social change, including Israeli leader Moshe Dayan and teenage Pakistani education advocate Malala Yousafzai. Each of these portraits is a reminder of how a single individual can change the way society thinks. (continued) This new series marks a stylistic departure, as Waisler tests the boundaries of recognition and explores new perspectives by elongating his subjects’ features to shadow-like proportions. Stretched to near distortion, his portrait of Vincent Van Gogh is still immediately recognizable thanks to the familiar red beard and deep-set eyes. This skillfully plays to Waisler’s idea of “re-membering,” his practice of deconstructing, remembering and then reconstructing his subjects’ likenesses. Some of the works are rendered in a restrained palette of black and white. Distilled, linear, almost gestural in nature, these portraits possess a haunting quality that transcends the subjects’ iconic status, revealing the person behind the persona. -

notes note on sources Although oral testimonies are subject to fallible human memories, they have none- theless proven invaluable in explaining several documents collected for this study. Documents never before seen by historians, found in people’s closets, basements, and desk drawers, created a much fuller and complex history, especially when their owners supplied the background and history of the documents as well. These sources helped re-create the unique and tragic history of the Mischlinge, which is still so little understood over half a century later. The thousands of pages of documents and oral testimonies (on 8 mm video and VHS video) in this study are now part of the permanent collection at the Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv in Freiburg, Germany, as the Bryan Mark Rigg Collection. Although interviews need to be treated with some skepticism, they have repeatedly shown that oral history often enriches rather than contradicts historical documents. All too often, history is written without the human element, that is, without knowing what these people thought, felt, and believed. Oral history helps reconstruct many of these people’s thoughts, feelings, and beliefs through their diaries, letters, interviews, and photographs. In this way, a healthy combination of hard documents or primary sources and secondary sources and testimonies expands our sense of this history. Often one reads about men and women but feels no human connection with them. The interviews were done to try to bridge this gap and to pro- vide readers with the means to enter these men’s and women’s thoughts and feelings to understand them better and to deepen readers’ knowledge of this history. -

Lee Waisler: Portraits & Abstractions
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUNDARAM TAGORE GALLERY IN HONG KONG PRESENTS "LEE WAISLER: PORTRAITS & ABSTRACTIONS" September 11 - October 11, 2008 (l-r) The Bride, 60 x 60", Einstein, 60 x 40", Kafka, 60 x 48", Aung San Suu Kyi, 50 x 50" all are acrylic and wood on canvas Hong Kong, SAR September 11, 2008 – SUNDARAM TAGORE GALLERY IN HONG KONG is pleased to present works by American artist Lee Waisler, in Portraits and Abstractions. The exhibition opens with a cocktail reception on September 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and runs through October 11, 2008. Gallerist Sundaram Tagore said, “We are excited to bring the first solo exhibition of Lee Waisler’s art to Hong Kong, his work spans a colossal range of styles and media. Waisler is one of the most influential West Coast US artists. He revived the notion of portraiture after Andy Warhol and lends a distinct technique and style to inter- pretation of influential personalities in our history. This show speaks to the soul of society, something that critics have repeatedly noted about Waisler’s work.” The paintings are dramatic and some of the portraits are rather large in scale, almost three meters tall. Waisler tackles current social and political issues, and offers a way to examine the spiritual, intellectual and aesthetic elements simultaneously in his work. He presents the viewer with a series of portraits of cultural and political icons, who have defined the modern world. The portraits are presented alongside thoughtful abstractions with multiplicity of forms, textures and perspectives. Painting beautiful forms replete with cross-cultural sym- bols and references, Waisler layers his canvasses with thick pigments, incorporating organic materials for their innate associative values: sand for time, wood for life, and glass for light. -
