They are primary vehicles for public dialogue about emotional, intellectual and aesthetic values, providing a subjective platform for human connection in our global society. An International art fair plays an important role in the building and sharing of cultural values. It creates opportunities for global connections and highlights the diverse interests of artists, collectors, dealers, museums, scholars and the public. It is with great excitement and pride that I am presenting the 9th annual Toronto International Art Fair - Art Toronto 2008. With an impressive line up of national and international galleries alongside an exciting roster of cultural partners and participants, TIAF has become an important and vital event on the Canadian cultural calendar. The success and strength of the Fair resides in the continual synergy of its various participants. Over the years we have had the pleasure to work with many talented and dedicated people and arts groups. I would like to recognize the ongoing support and commitment of the Toronto art community and its numerous establishments who through programming, professional counsel, partnering and hospitality are testaments to the leveraged value of team work. We have also been fortunate to have the loyal participation of numerous galleries whose continuous support and interest in TIAF has fueled its growth and attracted many new galleries and participants. Thank you and welcome to you all. To the Art Gallery of Ontario’s opening night chair Ms. Cathy Parkes and her volunteer committee a very special thank you. We are all the beneficiaries of your enthusiasm, support and generous effort. This year we are also pleased to add to our growing list of friends, Ms. Micaela Giovannotti who is presenting her inaugural Canadian curatorial debut with the video project Invisible Cities. Throughout history the arts has prospered through the vision and support of patrons. We are especially grateful to our presenting sponsor RBC Wealth Management and to the numerous other sponsors who underline the value of art in our community through their generous support. To each and every one who has been part of the building of this Fair I thank you, you are valuable contributors to creating the vibrant and exciting city that is Toronto. In closing I extend a special acknowledgement and welcome to the new managing group of the Fair, MMPI Canada. An established organization with an impressive portfolio of trade and event management including our prestigious sister fairs, The Armory Show in New York, Art Chicago, Volta and Next. My team and I are excited to be working with this International team of professionals and know we will all benefit from this association. Welcome to Art Toronto 2008. I trust you will enjoy the efforts of many and share the enthusiasm for art and culture in our community. Linel Rebenchuk Director Letters of Greetings 7 I am pleased to send my greetings to everyone attending the 2008 Toronto International Art Fair. I firmly believe that this Art Fair provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate the vitality of artists. Why? Because it is through the prism of their eyes that we revisit our own perspectives and learn to resist uniformity and immobility. They open our eyes to ever more astonishing possibilities. Through their work, artists have the ability to pull back the veil of the ordinary, to revel the extraordinary worlds that exist beyond our day-to-day lives. Every year, the Toronto International Art Fair serves as a showcase of talent from around the world, a place for art enthusiasts to pursue the latest and greatest works of some of the most exceptional contemporary creators of our time. I thank the organisers of the Art Fair for their commitment to celebrating art in all its forms, and I wish everyone an exciting and eye-opening experience. Michaëlle Jean October 2008 Letters of Greetings 9 It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending Art Toronto 2008, the 9th annual Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF). It is fitting that this contemporary art festival is being held in Toronto, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and a major centre for the arts in North America. TIAF will help bring further recognition and distinction to the city as an international centre of culture. Curators, critics, collectors and the general public will have the opportunity again this year to enjoy artistic excellence in the works of a diverse range of established and emerging artists from across Canada and around the world, knowing that their participation will benefit some of Toronto’s most popular non-profit museums of art. I would like to commend the event organizers for working together with government partners, community sponsors and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of events. With so many innovative artists participating, I know that the festival will be a resounding success. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish you all an enjoyable and enriching experience.
