We started THE INNER PATH in 2012 as a response to the growing interest in Buddhism which began to flower in India after the first big International Buddhist Conference was held in New Delhi in December 2011. Since then, the interest in Buddhism has been growing rapidly and with this Festival we ourselves are imbibing this wonderful philosophy along with all those who come to see the films, view the art exhibition and listen to the inspiring Talks by eminent Buddhist practitioners and scholars, from across the world. CELEBRATING BUDDHISM The Buddha sought enlightenment for all beings. “Buddha” means The Awakened One, meaning to awaken. We live now in THROUGH an era where ‘awakening’ is a necessity to cope with the physical CINEMA and mental strains the entire world is undergoing. The peace, enlightenment and most importantly impermanence are lessons taught by the Buddha that can help us all cope with the tensions flooding the world today. Many films on Buddhism convey these messages which can help us to live more peaceful and rewarding lives. Artists and filmmakers are looking for supreme enlightenment to which three great practitioners of Buddhism: Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, Venerable Gyalten Samtenand Venerable Dr. Dhammapiya, will show us the way. Lee Waisler is a Los Angeles-based artist who paints arresting portraits of iconic figures using a rich variety of materials. For this exhibition, Waisler presents a global group of individuals from diverse disciplines, eras and origins. Among his subjects are renowned artists, literary giants and Hollywood luminaries such as Frida Kahlo, Gertrude Stein and Charlie Chaplin, alongside influential figures of social change, including Israeli leader Moshe Dayan and teenage Pakistani education advocate Malala Yousafzai. Each of these portraits is a reminder of how a single individual can change the way society thinks. (continued) This new series marks a stylistic departure, as Waisler tests the boundaries of recognition and explores new perspectives by elongating his subjects’ features to shadow-like proportions. Stretched to near distortion, his portrait of Vincent Van Gogh is still immediately recognizable thanks to the familiar red beard and deep-set eyes. This skillfully plays to Waisler’s idea of “re-membering,” his practice of deconstructing, remembering and then reconstructing his subjects’ likenesses. Some of the works are rendered in a restrained palette of black and white. Distilled, linear, almost gestural in nature, these portraits possess a haunting quality that transcends the subjects’ iconic status, revealing the person behind the persona.

Gallerist Sundaram Tagore said, “We are excited to bring the first solo exhibition of Lee Waisler’s art to Hong Kong, his work spans a colossal range of styles and media. Waisler is one of the most influential West Coast US artists. He revived the notion of portraiture after Andy Warhol and lends a distinct technique and style to inter- pretation of influential personalities in our history. This show speaks to the soul of society, something that critics have repeatedly noted about Waisler’s work.” The paintings are dramatic and some of the portraits are rather large in scale, almost three meters tall. Waisler tackles current social and political issues, and offers a way to examine the spiritual, intellectual and aesthetic elements simultaneously in his work. He presents the viewer with a series of portraits of cultural and political icons, who have defined the modern world. The portraits are presented alongside thoughtful abstractions with multiplicity of forms, textures and perspectives. Painting beautiful forms replete with cross-cultural sym- bols and references, Waisler layers his canvasses with thick pigments, incorporating organic materials for their innate associative values: sand for time, wood for life, and glass for light.

    TOPOGRAPHIES OF ANTI-NUCLEAR ART IN LATE COLD WAR LOS ANGELES Michelle Moravec With the tenth anniversary of the end of the Cold War drawing near, museums around the world mounted exhibitions that focused on the cultural aspect of the conflict. From the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art , almost all considerations of culture in the Cold War focus on the first two decades. The periodisation of these exhibitions reflects the dominant trend in scholarship, which centres on the years in which the slow simmer conflict experienced frequent flare ups. Studies of Cold War culture take one of two tacks, exploring the impact of the bomb on manifestations of culture, such as art, literature and film, as well as fashion, design, and everyday aesthetics. Another school concentrates on the ways that high art was pressed into diplomatic service during the Cold War. This narrative strand ties the formalist concerns that dominated aesthetics to the zeitgeist of the Cold War. Since very little political content could be imputed to non-figurative or non-realist art, the story goes, this art made the perfect expression of American culture for use by cold warrior administrations. In recent years, both accounts of culture in the Cold War have received considerable elaboration in some finely wrought studies. However, the focus still remains on the 1950s and early 1960s, with the rare work moving past the Cuban Missile Crisis. The influential historian of the Cold War, Charles S Meier, divides the long conflict into eight epochs. The lengthy period of dormancy in the 1970s, which Meier characterizes as 'domestic reform and detente' resulted in a decline in the Cold War cultural battles.

Israeli-born Nathan Slate Joseph grapples with the human condition of shantytown dwellers in developing countries. Scavenging for scrap metal, he takes this humble material and transforms it into high art. !e artist covers these sheets of found metal with bright pigments and acids. Le$ outdoors, the metal is exposed to the elements to trigger a transformational process. Similarly, American artist Lee Waisler draws inspiration from the struggle for survival in third world countries.
