Stewardship Pastoral Message Jan 23-24 $8,629 Online/EFTs $875 My brothers and sisters in Christ,

Fiscal year-to-date $559,731 Our readings for this week center on the voice of God. I am reminded Budget year-to-date $556,540 Prior fiscal year-to-date $560,068 of something I read from CS Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters (worth a read). In these fictitious letters Screwtape, a demon, is advising a lesser demon, Wormwood, on how to best tempt the man he is assigned to turn away from God.

At first Wormwood tries the same old routine. He tries to turn his head to power, pleasure, wealth and vanity. After hearing of Wormwood’s failures to get the man to become addicted to these, Screwtape chides Wormwood as making things too complex. Screwtape simply tells Wormwood to make the world around him so noisy that he can’t hear the voice of his God.

Moses promises a prophet that is to come in the 1st reading. Our Psalm says “if today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts”. Both of these are contingent upon being able to hear that voice, being able to hear the prophet’s call. The Gospel also speaks of the power of the Lord’s voice. It is at the command of that the unclean spirits flee. Just as at creation when God speaks, it IS. God’s word is what accomplishes all things. The creation story and the healings of Jesus are just a few of the many times where God’s word alters reality-it changes men, women and the world.

Yet, for all the power of God’s word, it needs us to hear it. Jesus continually removes himself from crowds and finds a secluded place to speak to the Father. Hermits have run to caves and the desert, nuns and brothers remove themselves to a convent or monastery. This is all done in an effort to hear the voice of God.

If we consider the amount of noise, the amount of things pulling for our time and attention, it can be near impossible for us to hear God’s voice. That is the reason that prayer is so important. God desires a relationship with us and no relationship can improve without dialogue- speaking and listening.

We all need to find time in our day, every day, to detach from the world and hear the voice of God. Prayer is the means by which we stay attached to God and draw close to the God who loves without end. May each of us every day rise and say to God, “speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”

Faith Formation—Youth / Children Saint of the Week Saint Blaise Feast day: February 3 Patron of Throat Illnesses, animals, wool combers

Most of probably know St. Blaise from the throat blessings that occur on his feast day. He is the patron of throat illnesses and we bless throats on his day because the first information we have on his life is from early medical writings in which his work as a doctor helping those with objects stuck in their throats is catalogued.

He worked as a doctor tending to physical ailments before he became a “physician of souls”. He left his life and work as a doctor and took up the reflective life of a hermit. He eventually was made the bishop of Sebastea (in the east central part of modern day Turkey now the city of Sivas).

Blaise was eventually arrested for being a Christian as it was illegal at the time in the eastern under Licinius. After refusing to deny his faith, he was beaten and had iron combs tear his flesh from his body. Still refusing to deny Christ, he was beheaded in 316.

The two candles used in the blessing of throats on his feast day are attributed to an old woman who came to give Blaise two candles to light his dark cell.
