Mellon Collection 1937.1.1 ENTRY The painting shows the Madonna seated frontally on an elaborate, curved, two-tier, wooden throne of circular plan.[1] She is supporting the blessing Christ child on her left arm according to the iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria.[2] Mary is wearing a red mantle over an azure dress. The child is dressed in a salmon-colored tunic and blue mantle; he holds a red scroll in his left hand, supporting it on his lap.[3] In the upper corners of the panel, at the height of the Virgin’s head, two medallions contain busts of two archangels [fig. 1] [fig. 2], with their garments surmounted by loroi and with scepters and spheres in their hands.[4] It was Bernard Berenson (1921) who recognized the common authorship of this work and Enthroned Madonna and Child and who concluded—though admitting he had no specialized knowledge of art of this cultural area—that they were probably works executed in Constantinople around 1200.[5] These conclusions retain their authority and continue to stir debate. -

THE BIGGEST SHOW ON EARTH: The U2 360- Degree Tour and its implications on the Concert Industry An Undergraduate Honors Thesis by Daniel Dicker Senior V449 Professor Monika Herzig April 2011 Abstract The rock band U2 is currently touring stadiums and arenas across the globe in what is, by all accounts, the most ambitious and expensive concert tour and stage design in the history of the live music business. U2’s 360-Degree Tour, produced and marketed by Live Nation Entertainment, is projected to become the top-grossing tour of all time when it concludes in July of 2011. This is due to a number of different factors that this thesis will examine: the stature of the band, the stature of the ticket-seller and concert-producer, the ambitious and attendance- boosting design of the stage, the relatively-low ticket price when compared with the ticket prices of other tours and the scope of the concert's production, and the resiliency of ticket sales despite a poor economy. After investigating these aspects of the tour, this thesis will determine that this concert endeavor will become a new model for arena level touring and analyze the factors for success. Introduction The concert industry handbook is being rewritten by U2 - a band that has released blockbuster albums and embarked on sell-out concert tours for over three decades - and the largest concert promotion company in the world, Live Nation. This thesis is an examination of how these and other forces have aligned to produce and execute the most impressive concert production and single-most successful concert tour in history. -

Ciaran Gribbin
Ciaran Gribbin Ciaran Gribbin is a Grammy nominated songwriter and performer who, in addition to working with word class artists such as Madonna, U2, Paul McCartney, Snow Patrol and Al Pacino, has toured the world as the singer of INXS. Ciaran was born in war-torn Northern Ireland growing up in ‘The Troubles’. As a young musician he cut his teeth doing gig after gig in the tough bars of Belfast and Derry. During this turbulent time in a divided society, Ciaran witnessed and experienced the bombs and bullets of sectarian abuse and paramilitary attacks. Ciaran’s first big break came in 2010 when he received a Grammy nomination for Madonna’s worldwide hit single ‘Celebration’, which he co-wrote with Madonna and Oakenfold. Since then, in addition to performing at many music festivals including Brazil’s ‘Rock in Rio’, Ciaran has opened shows for Paul McCartney, Crowded House, The Script and Gotye. Ciaran has worked extensively as a songwriter for acts such as Groove Armada and Dead Mau5. He has also worked on multiple movie soundtracks including writing all of the original songs for the U2 supported movie ‘Killing Bono’. This movie was released through Paramount Pictures with a Sony Music soundtrack album. In 2011 Ciaran became the singer of the legendary Australian band INXS. A different scholar, visiting artist, playwright, or other expert will join the discussion each time. The Artistic Perspective discussions are held after the first Sunday matinee performance. These discussions, led by Portland Stage artistic staff, actors, directors, and designers answer questions, share stories and explore the challenges of bringing a particular play to the stage. The first issue ofthe Occasional Papers was "The Walker Art Building Murals" by Richard V. West, then director of the museum. A second issue, "The Bowdoin Sculpture of St. John Nepomuk" by Zdenka Volavka, appeared in 1975. In this issue, Susan E. Wegner, assistant professor of art history at Bowdoin, discusses three drawings from the museum's permanent collection, all by seventeenth- century Tuscan artists. Her analysis of the style, history, and content of these three sheets adds enormously to our understanding of their origins and their interconnec- tions. Apparitions of Mary Chris Maunder Introduction: apparitions of Mary in medieval England and modern EuropJ T A TIME AROUND THE BEGINNING of the eighth century, a swineherd A named Eoves or Eof experienced a vision of three women at a place that we now know as Evesham in Worcestershire, named after him. The woman in the centre was identified as the Virgin Mary, although anyone familiar with the ancient triple goddess in works by Robert Graves and others would probably suggest that this was a christianization of a pagan story. A Benedictine monk Ecgwin, bishop of Worcester, visiting the site, also had a vision of Mary there, and established the abbey which remained until the Reformation; it is now a much-visited ruin with several surviving medieval buildings. The full story of Eoves and Ecgwin is peculiar to Evesham, but the underlying structure is a familiar one in Catholicism. The typical apparition is rooted in local traditions, traditions which stand at the interface between doctrinal Christianity and common religion with its folklore and belief in the spirit world. 2 The visionary is often someone located in the liminal (marginal) region between society and nature, usually a herder of animals at the edge of the village. If the apparition is to take its place in history, however, it has to receive the approval of the church hierarchy. This process of legitimization is also one in which the story sheds much of its common religion element, and becomes instead associated with the establishment of an official religious centre. As the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci noted, the Roman Catholic Church is very effective at integrating the popular and official in religious devotion. -

Chopin’s novel clearly participates in a nineteenth-century-narrative concern for the plight of Victorian women as objects in marriage and motherhood. References in critical works to The Awakening as an “American Bovary” in particular certainly seem justified: both Emma Bovary and Edna Pontellier, in their inability or unwillingness to conform to middle-class con- vention, become bored with their husbands, neglect their offspring, take two lovers (one inexperienced and earnest, the other a philanderer), and ultimately commit suicide.
