Karl Rahner’s Work on the Assumption of Mary into Heaven By Mark F. Fischer, St. John’s Seminary, Camarillo [Mark F. Fischer is Professor of Theology at St. John’s Seminary, the seminary of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Hans-Georg Gadamer and the Catholic Theology of Tradition (Berkeley: Graduate Theological Union, 1985). In 2005 he published The Foundations of Karl Rahner, a paraphrase of Rahner’s Foundations of Catholic Faith.] Abstract Karl Rahner completed his Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis in 1951 but did not receive permission to publish it from his Jesuit superiors. The work was only published in 2004, twenty years after Rahner’s death. This essay examines his treatise on the Assumption of Mary and the objections of the censors. The relation between the treatise and Rahner’s publication of 1947, “On the Theology of Death,” receives special attention. The shorter work was appended to the Marian treatise as an “excursus” but laid the foundation for the later work. Rahner reinterpreted the dogma of the Assumption in light of the resurrection of the dead, which the assumption of Mary’s body and soul into heaven anticipates. Among Rahner’s many speculative comments, this essay focuses on three. First, at the final resurrection, the soul (separated at death from the body) re-creates a new and glorified body as its fulfillment and perfection. Second, the glorified body expresses a metaphysical holiness that matures between the moment of death and the final judgment. And third, the resurrection of the body completes the transformation of the world as a new heaven and a new earth that began with the Incarnation. -

Since the begin- ning of Christianity, the Church has considered Saturdays to be dedi- cated to intensifying our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our mother. Many people consecrated the first Saturday of the month to Mary for this intention and in reparation for the blasphe- mies and sacrileges against her from sinners and false teachings. On June 13, 1912, St. Pius X granted new indulgences to practices: “To promote the piety of the Faithful towards Immaculate Mary, Mother of God, and to make Reparation for the outrages done to her holy Name and her privileges by impious men, St. Pius X granted, for the first Satur- day of each month, a plenary indulgence, applicable to the souls in pur- gatory. Conditions: confession, communion, prayers for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff and pious practices in the spirit of Reparation in honour of the Immaculate Virgin.” Five years later, on June 13, 1917, there took place at Fatima the great manifestation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. 3 Apparition of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Fatima On June 13, 1917 Our Lady appeared a second time to three children (Lucy, Jacinta, Francesco) in Fatima. Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. In a world in which the most vulnerable are so often overlooked and disregarded, Christ calls us to embrace and uphold the unconditional dignity of every human life. The Pietà in historical perspective The Pietà is not a scene that can be found in the Gospels. The Gospels describe Crucifixion (El Greco), Deposition or descent from the Cross (Rubens), Laying on the ground (Epitaphios), Lamentation (Giotto), Entombment (Rogier Van de Weyden) So How did this image emerge? Background one-devotional images • Narrative images from the Gospel, e.g Icon of Mary at foot of cross • Devotional images, where scene is taken out of its historical context to be used for prayer. e.g. Man of Sorrows from Constantinople and print of it by Israhel van Meckenhem. The Pietà is one of a number of devotional images that developed from the 13th century, which went with intense forms of prayer in which the person was asked to imagine themselves before the image speaking with Jesus. It emerged first in the Thuringia area of Germany, where there was a tradition of fine wood carving and which was also open to mysticism. Background two-the position of the Virgin Mary • During the middle ages the position of Mary grew in importance, as reflected in the doctrine of the Assumption (Titian), the image of the coronation of the Virgin (El Greco) • So too did the emphasis on Mary sharing in the suffering of Jesus as in this Mater Dolorosa (Titian) • Further background is provided by the Orthodox image of the threnos which was taken up by Western mystics, and the image of The Virgin of Humility A devotional gap? • So the Pietà, which is not a Gospel scene, started to appear as a natural stage, between the Gospel scenes of the crucifixion smf the deposition or descent from the cross on the one hand, and the stone of annointing, the lamentation, and the burial on the other. -
