e tend to talk about the enormous generosity of our donors in tangible terms. We use words like “investment,” “resources,” and “endowment.” And we cherish the brick- Wand-mortar results: state-of-the-art facilities, a world-class faculty, and exceptional academic programs. Cedars-Sinai’s success has been built, nurtured, and sustained by you, our philanthropic partners. But the intangible treasures you share with us are timeless. Donor loyalty across years, and even generations, enables Cedars-Sinai to plan and grow. Philanthropic vision cultivates new programs and research initiatives. And compassion is what binds our family of caregivers, scientists, and supporters. Examples of extraordinary loyalty are all around the Medical Center. The inimitable Barbra Streisand is a generous partner whose gifts go far beyond philanthropy—to education and advocacy. She tirelessly champions women’s cardiac health and has provided her leadership, along with her name, to the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at our Heart Institute. “Donor loyalty across years, and even In this issue, you will also find the generations, enables Cedars-Sinai to plan story of an exceptional couple, Robert (Bob) and Georgia Roth. Year after year, the company helps fund game-changing research—and donates a top-of-the-line luxury vehicle for the gala’s opportunity drawing—asking absolutely nothing in return. We are deeply grateful to each and every visionary donor who inspires success and sustains us through difficult times. And we give a warm Cedars-Sinai welcome to our new donors: more than 10,000 of you joined us in fiscal year 2012. The Sports Spectacular Fellowship Program—the largest fellowship endowment at Cedars-Sinai— fosters the research of five outstanding young medical scholars, scientists, and physicians each year. This year’s group of impressive young researchers is the sixth cohort of Sports Spectacular fellows. Their potentially groundbreaking work includes studying new treatments for heart disease, stimulating the brain to fight Parkinson’s, repairing facial trauma, and investigating hormones in the gut in the quest to cure diabetes. The Wordle™ graphic on the left illustrates the most frequently used words at the special event that served to introduce this year’s Sports Spectacular fellows. Each of them discussed what inspired their careers, the nature of their research, and their hopes for the future.

Carrots or chips? Exercise or TV? When it comes to Milk or soda? Let’s face it: Unhealthy nutrition and fitness, choices can be tempting no matter what our age. But a growing summer is no time of parents and children in disadvantaged Los Angeles neighborhoods now make healthier choices when it comes to questions like the above— for a vacation from thanks to Cedars-Sinai’s Healthy Habits program aimed at combatting healthier choices. childhood obesity. Healthy Habits is helping children and families learn about healthy eating and physical activity with programs reaching elementary and middle school students, parents of preschool children, and families in underserved communities. In partnership with LA’s Best, Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC), and other community organizations, Cedars-Sinai recently expanded these programs to include summer sessions. We caught up with them one day last August. Parents and kids alike proved that it’s never too late—or too early—to cultivate healthy habits.

Cedars-Sinai’s Healthy Habits programs foster good nutrition and exercise habits for both adults and children.

Latin music pulsating from a boom box sets the pace. Despite the energy-sapping muggy air, this group doesn’t miss a beat. They’ve been working out together several times a week since late June. Wandering through the maze of moms in motion are children who seem fascinated by the music and movement. Sunny, a Cedars-Sinai Healthy Habits educator, has this group’s full attention for an hour of games and activities designed to stretch their minds and bodies. Part of Cedars-Sinai’s wide-ranging effort to fight childhood obesity, the weekly workshop is offered over a six-week period at KYCC’s summer day camp as well as several other L.A. day camps. Sunny leads the children in versions of “Red Light, Green Light” and “Bingo” that highlight healthy foods. She makes the most of every teachable moment by keeping the focus on fun. And now it’s time to exercise. Sunny calls out the name of a food and the class must remember a different movement for each food group. No problem. These kids are quick. So when Sunny says “green bean,” they immediately bend over to touch their toes and then rise up to become a “stretchable vegetable.” The whole class giggles every time the dairy group comes up and they get to sway their hips and do the “milk mambo.” The session ends with the students mixing together yogurt, blueberries, and whole-wheat nuggets cereal to make a yogurt parfait. They appear to enjoy this nutritious snack as much as if it were a dish of ice cream.
