CHAPITRE 3 CONDITIONS SOCIO-ECONOMIQUES ET PROBLEMATIQUE DE LA ZONE D’ETUDE 3.1 Conditions socio-économiques actuelles 3.1.1 Système administratif, zone de démarcation et population La zone de l’étude, à savoir les 2 districts, 9 communes et 52 villages, comme indiqué dans le tableau suivant, est administrativement sous la juridiction de la région d’Alaotra-Mangoro. Géographiquemnt, la zone de l’étude comprend le bassin versant de la rivière Sahabe, lesbassin versant de la rivière Sahamilahy, les bassins de 4 petits et moyens cours d’eau, et la zone du PC 23. La délimitation administrative est illustrée à la Fig. 3.1. Situation analysis Description of the disaster On 17 January, the Weather Service published a Communique on the risk (low to moderate) of cyclogenesis in the Mozambique Channel, and on 19 January the cyclonic circulation called Zone de Convergence Inter-Tropicale (ZCIT) is fed by the monsoon flow on the North of the Channel to the Northwest of Madagascar. The related storm made landfall on 22nd January on the West coast of Madagascar, in the district of Besalampy, the Melaky region. Red Alert Warning for heavy rains was issued for the following regions on the 22nd January: Boeny, Sofia (Districts of Analalava, Antsohihy, Mampikomy, Boriziny, and Mandritsara), Yellow Alert Warning was issued for the region of Analamanga and Alaotra Mangoro, On 23rd January, Red Alert for High wind for the majority of the coast of the country, from the North, North-Eastern, North-Western, and Western regions. -

Feistner Abstract The results of a field census of Alaotran group encounter rate was at least 50 per cent lower than gentle lemurs Hapalemur griseus alaotrensis carried out in 5 years before. Analysis of Household Food Security in Selected Districts of Madagascar UN World Food Programme Antananarivo, Madagascar September 2009 1 Background and Overview In June 2009, a household survey was conducted in 33 districts in 11 regions around the country in order to measure the impact of several different shocks on household food security and to provide key household level information into a joint FAO/WFP crop and food security assessment. The focus was to measure the impact (if any) of the political situation as well as the drought in the south that had affected crop production. This report contains additional analysis of household data from the June 2009 survey and focuses on identifying areas which were food secure as well as those that were chronically food insecure and those that were newly food insecure due to the poor performance of the agricultural season. The report will first provide some descriptive analysis by region and district and then will outline the analytical approach for the food security classification analysis, followed by the description of the food security groups and lastly their location within the country, by sampled district. 2 Household Survey Findings Demographics Household size: The mean household size was 5.8 persons, ranging from 4.7 in Analanjirofo to 7.1 persons in Androy region while the median was 5 persons. However, about one-quarter of the sampled households in Atsimo Atsinanana and Androy regions had 10 or more members. In contrast, about one-third of the sample households in Analanjirofo region had 1-3 members. By district, the median household size was 7 persons for households in Beloha, Toliary II and Tsihombe while the smallest households were found in Fenoarivo Atsinanana and Toamasina II samples (4 persons). -

INTRODUCTION Le Service pédologique de l’Institut de Recherche Scientifique de Madagascar a entrepris 1’Ctablissement d’une carte au 1 /200.000e des sols de la Grande Ile, carte qui viendra compléter les cartes gCologiques du Service des Mines. C’est ainsi que les cartes du Mandrare et de la Mena- randra sont prêtes pour la publication. Mais, parallèlement, des cartes à grande échelle des régions susceptibles d’un dCveloppement agricole immé- diat seront dressCes, La carte au 1/50.000e du lac Alaotra est la première de cette série. I1 était en effet, nécessaire, avant toute mise en valeur de la rCgion, de localiser et d’analyser les différents types de sols utilisables pour l’agriculture. Le 1/50.000e a Cté choisi comme Ctant I’échelle du fond topographique Ctabli par le service géographique. I1 permet une vue d’ensemble de toute la cuvette du lac Alaotra sous un format commode. I1 peut servir de base aux grands travaux qui vont &tre entrepris dans cette région : hydraulique agricole, délimitation des rgserves indigènes et des concessions, constructions de routes, etc..., mais cette .échelle reste insuffisante dans le cadre d’une concession. La carte permet bien de déterminer 1’Ctendue de chaque type de sol, mais il ne faut jamais oublier que les variations locales, surtout dans les alluvions, sont très grandes.
