THE HOUSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO APPEAR AT THE UM THEATRE
One of this year’s outstanding events for Missoula music lovers is the
scheduled appearance of the Houston Symphony Orchestra Friday evening (Feb. 17)
at the University Theatre on the UM campus.
The Houston Symphony Orchestra, directed by Sir John Barbirolli, is a com
bination of the finest musicians and one of the most highly esteemed directors
in the music world according to many critics.
Music critics have been moved to the use of superlatives when describing the
Houston ensemble. The Saturday Review calls it "one of America's best." Following
a concert in the nation's largest city, New York critics were unanimous in their
praise, and the New Yorker magazine described the orchestra's "brilliance and ! virtuosity." The toughest critic of all, the audience, remained a full 15
minutes after the New York concert to cheer the performance.
The orchestra was founded 52 years ago and grew to prominence under the dir
ection of Leopold Stowkowski, Efrem Kurtz, and guest conductors such as Pierre
Monteux and Leonard Bernstein.
Sir John Barbirolli took the baton in Houston in 1961 after being selected for
knighthood because of his achievements with England's Halle Orchestra. He has also
conducted the New York Philharmonic orchestra.
The appearance of the Houston Symphony Orchestra is one of the presentations
of the UM student's Program Council. All seats must be reserved through the Lodge
desk. 30
