The regional centre of Barnstaple lies about 10 miles to the north and the local market town of South Molton about 9 miles to the north east. From South Molton there are junctions onto the A361 which links to the M5 at junction 27 where there is also a station on the Paddington Line at Tiverton Parkway. Exmoor National Park is easily accessible and the impressive North Devon coastline with its steep cliffs and wide sandy beaches if also within easy reach by car. Description Middlewood is a fine and interesting country house set in a very private and quiet position overlooking its own land. Constructed with thick, rendered elevations under an artificial slate roof, the house is Listed Grade II and is believed to date from c.1500 and is originally believed to be an open hall house, which has been subsequently remodelled and altered over the centuries. The listing identifies a number of interesting character features such as boarded and beaded wooden framed doors, chamfered joists, C17 open fire place with stone jambs and chamfered wooden lintel, bread ovens, old wooden wall bench, creamer, late C16 plank and muntin oak screen with chamfered muntins and scroll stops and cruck trusses. Outside there are a good range of adaptable, traditional farm buildings, together with more modern pole barns and in total about 43 acres of pasture and woodland. The Gardens To the front of the house is a patio area with low stone walled flower and shrub beds with lawned gardens beyond to the front and western side. The gardens are attractively landscaped with rhododendrons, azaleas, Tuscany cypresses, acers, chestnuts, maples, rose beds, shrubberies and fruit trees. In the south western corner is an ornamental pond. The Buildings These are mainly set around a courtyard to the rear of the house and comprise mainly traditional farm buildings: To the eastern side of the house is a stone, cob, block, part rendered and artificial slate TRADITIONAL BARN with first floor STORE ROOM above. It is considered that it may be possible to extend the existing accommodation of the house into this building, subject to all necessary consents. Attached to the northern side of the house is a stone, cob, block rendered and tiled WORKSHOP with loft over approximately 24’ (max) x 39’ with door to stone, brick quoin and tiled BARN 27’ x 12’10”. Further timber framed POLE BARN 36’ x 28’ with concrete base, with a vegetable garden to the rear with Polytunnel. On the northern side of the buildings, a seven-bay timber and GI open GENERAL PURPOSE BUILDING. The Land The land is situated mainly to the north, south and west of the farmstead. There are a number of good sized pasture fields, together with a managed woodland plantation of oak, ash, beech, Sitka, Japanese larch, hawthorn, hazel, sweet chestnut, field maples, wild cherry, birch, alder and Douglas fir as well as mature deciduous woodland.
