Exciting expansion to the Emergency Services Department (ER) is moving along at a good clip at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, thanks to the $14 million committed by generous donors to the Emergency Services Capital Campaign. That commitment fully funds the project vision.

Over the past few weeks workers revealed significant improvements in the current ER space. Some of the plastic sheeting came down. Each year, Kalispell Regional Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) cares for 160 premature and struggling newborns. The youngest was just 26 weeks and 4 days gestational age, a full 13 weeks earlier than the minimum to be considered full-term. The average length of stay is around 13 days, but some leave after a couple days and others stay for several months.

Got milk? Experts agree that mother’s milk provides the best possible nutrients for newborns, but breastfeeding is sometimes not an option when babies need special care in the NICU. To address that, KRMC supplies human milk for babies in its NICU through a collaboration with Prolacta Bioscience, which provides a safe, standardized, and steady supply of donor milk. “It has been shown in the neonatology literature that breast milk significantly decreases some of the more severe complications of prematurity,” said Dr. Kaneta, NICU medical director. The NICU staff remains grateful to have the necessary equipment, staff, physicians, and community support to keep these tiny patients at home in northwest Montana. When Mike Potter, a patient in line for hip surgery at Northwest Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (NWOSM), came in on March 28 to reschedule his surgery date, Nina Viano knew something wasn’t right.

“When he came to my window he looked flushed, was out of breath and was rambling on, not making a lot of sense,” the receptionist said. Nina asked if he felt all right. “He told me he’d been having this sharp chest pain for the past three days.”

Mike, a Whitefish native and fitness buff who had come to the office the day after Easter, later recalled that it was a rough drive to town.

Long-term, they dream of building an outpatient clinic, starting a home-based program, and instituting telemedicine for the neighboring communities in northwest Montana.

Meeting the needs of individual patients — perhaps providing airfare so an adult child can visit a parent in his or her final stretch of life — always are at the top of the wish list. If it centers on giving them the best possible experience, they do what it takes to provide the resources.
