Set in Korea during the Korean War, M*A*S*H was a satire on the war in Vietnam. As a result, M*A*S*H presents numerous Asian (Korean) characters throughout the series, but often in limited, stereotypical roles. Despite producing America’s most watched final season episode “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen,” and being granted several Emmy nominations and awards, M*A*S*H has all but evaded lengthy academic study. This thesis primarily uses newspapers, both local and national, to understand how Asian stereotypes are presented in M*A*S*H with relationship to American society. Through the analysis of seven Asian-centered character roles, including; farmer/villager, houseboy/housekeeper, prostitute, war bride, peddler/hustler, orphan, and enemy, I explore the foundations of these stereotypes as well as how they were being utilized to reassure Americans of their own communal, Cold War, beliefs in a time of distress. I explore how these roles change and adapt over the course of the series and what may be motivating these changes, such as the Asian- American, Civil Rights and women’s rights movements, and changing Cold War ideologies and objectives. iv For my Parents, Grandmother and Aunt, Debbie v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I owe a debt of gratitude to all who helped me on this project and only wish I had a better means of thanking them for all of their support. Newspapers, word-of- mouth and media help spread and maintain these stereotypes, and M*A*S*H, as an extremely popular American television comedy show, is not an exception. Asian stereotypes following World War II had a strong influence from and on the Cold War ideologies of the United States. The belief in the U.S. as a “policing force” for the rest of the world supported stereotypes surrounding those who the U.S. was then in the process of “protecting,” in particular Korea and Vietnam. The stereotype of a weak, docile, yet untrustworthy and subversive Asian character in need of U.S. assistance, protection, and reformation not only legitimized the U.S. role as “policing force” but helped the continuation of these stereotypes. Popular media, specifically M*A*S*H, utilizes established East Asian stereotypes to support a community belief in the U.S. as a superior, protecting force for the rest of the world. This thesis will use the television series M*A*S*H as a case study to understand how East Asian stereotypes can be employed to support larger collective beliefs while showing that these stereotypes are also fluid and adaptable, as they were affected by social movements of the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. Through the examination of seven Asian-specific character roles; houseboy/housekeeper, prostitute, war bride, farmer/villager, peddler/hustler, orphan and enemy, I explore the foundations of these stereotypes as well as how they are being utilized to reassure Americans of their own beliefs in a time of distress: the Vietnam War. Chapter one outlines Asian character stereotypes presented in M*A*S*H during its first five seasons (1972-77) to establish the real-life influences on these stereotypes, their accuracy 2 within the show, and their prevalence (level of occurrence). Chapter two considers seasons six through eleven ((1977-83), including the final episode) to understand the changes that have arisen over the course of the show’s production as well as what may have contributed to any changes, or lack of changes, in representation. Specifically, chapter two focuses on the social movements of the time period in which the show was produced, to understand the role these movements may have played in altering media representations of Asian-Americans. As America turned inward, to focus on its own social problems following the Vietnam War, M*A*S*H also changed. The noticeable shift during season five (1976-77) with the departure of Frank Burns (Larry Linville) following the end of the Vietnam War signaled a drastic change in the character of the show from a message against military bureaucracy to a discussion on the individual struggles faced by the show’s main characters.1 This shift serves to divide the series into two parts; pre and post, Vietnam War. Chapter one and two reflect this division within M*A*S*H and America. M*A*S*H – From Book to Movie to Television M*A*S*H has become one of America’s best known situational comedies. Beginning as a book by the same title by H. Richard Hornberger writing under the name Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H grew in popularity to become first a movie, then a television series.2 The book that sparked the

    Mary, Roseanne, and Carrie: Television and Fictional Feminism By Rachael Horowitz Television, as a cultural expression, is unique in that it enjoys relatively few boundaries in terms of who receives its messages. Few other art forms share television's ability to cross racial, class and cultural divisions. As an expression of social interactions and social change, social norms and social deviations, television's widespread impact on the true “general public” is unparalleled. For these reasons, the cultural power of television is undeniable. It stands as one of the few unifying experiences for Americans. John Fiske's Media Matters discusses the role of race and gender in US politics, and more specifically, how these issues are informed by the media. He writes, “Television often acts like a relay station: it rarely originates topics of public interest (though it may repress them); rather, what it does is give them high visibility, energize them, and direct or redirect their general orientation before relaying them out again into public circulation.” 1 This process occurred with the topic of feminism, and is exemplified by the most iconic females of recent television history. TV women inevitably represent a strain of diluted feminism. As with any serious subject matter packaged for mass consumption, certain shortcuts emerge that diminish and simplify the original message. In turn, what viewers do see is that much more significant. What the TV writers choose to show people undoubtedly has a significant impact on the understanding of American female identity.     Transformative Effects of Immigration Law: Immigrants’ Personal and Social Metamorphoses through Regularization1 Cecilia Menjívar Sarah M. Lakhani University of Kansas University of California, Berkeley This article examines the enduring alterations in behaviors, practices, and self-image that immigrants’ evolving knowledge of and partici- pation in the legalization process facilitate. Relying on close to 200 interviews with immigrants from several national origin groups in Los Angeles and Phoenix, the authors identify transformations that indi- viduals enact in their intimate and in their civic lives as they come in contact with U.S. immigration law en route to and as a result of reg- ularization. Findings illustrate the power of the state to control indi- viduals’ activities and mind-sets in ways that are not explicitly formal or bureaucratic. The barriers the state creates, which push immigrants to the legal margins, together with anti-immigrant hostility, create con- ditions under which immigrants are likely to undertake transformative, lasting changes in their lives. These transformations reify notions of the deserving immigrant vis-à-vis the law, alter the legalization pro- cess for the immigrant population at large, and, ultimately, shape in- tegration dynamics. It focuses upon women writers. The trope of “border crossings”—both actual and in the mind, was central in the late-twentieth century to much feminist, Marxist, postcolonial and race-cognisant cultural commentary and critique, and the concepts of hybridity, diaspora, whiteness, the exotic, postcolonising and (gendered) cultural identities were examined and deployed. In the “paranoid nation” of the twenty-first century, there is a new orientation on the part of governments towards ideas of—if not quite an imminent Yellow Peril—a “fortress Australia,” that turns back to where they came from all boats that are not cruise liners, containerships or warships (of allies). In the sphere of cultural critique, notions of a post-multiculturality that smugly declares that anything resembling identity politics is “so twentieth-century,” are challenged by a rising creative output in Australia of diverse literary representations of and by people with Asian connections and backgrounds.     ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media.     Paramount Collection Airtight To control the air is to rule the world. Nuclear testing has fractured the Earth's crust, releasing poisonous gases into the atmosphere. Breathable air is now an expensive and rare commodity. A few cities have survived by constructing colossal air stacks which reach through the toxic layer to the remaining pocket of precious air above. The air is pumped into a huge underground labyrinth system, where a series of pipes to the surface feed the neighborhoods of the sealed city. It is the Air Force, known as the "tunnel hunters", that polices the system. Professor Randolph Escher has made a breakthrough in a top-secret project, the extraction of oxygen from salt water in quantity enough to return breathable air to the world. Escher is kidnapped by business tycoon Ed Conrad, who hopes to monopolize the secret process and make a fortune selling the air by subscription to the masses. Because Conrad Industries controls the air stacks, not subscribing to his "air service" would mean certain death. When Air Force Team Leader Flyer Lucci is murdered, his son Rat Lucci soon uncovers Conrad's involvement in his father's death and in Escher's kidnapping. Rat must go after Conrad, not only to avenge his father's murder, but to rescue Escher and his secret process as well.
