Fifth Sunday in Lent THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Celebrant: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People: His mercy endures for ever.

Penitential Order Prayer Book, pg. 351 Celebrant: Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The Confession Prayer Book, pg. 352 : Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Deacon and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Kyrie Fifth Sunday in Lent

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray.

Collect of the Day Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Jeremiah 31:31-34 “The days are surely coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband,” says the LORD. “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says the LORD: “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” says the LORD; “for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.” Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 51:11-16 11 Create in me a clean / heart, O God, * and renew / a right spirit within me. 12 Cast me not away / from your presence * and take not your / holy Spirit from me. 13 Give me the joy of your saving / help again * and sustain me / with your bountiful Spirit. 14 I shall teach your ways / to the wicked, * and sinners / shall return to you. 15 Deliver me from / death, O God, * and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness, O / God of my salvation. Fifth Sunday in Lent

16 Open my / lips, O Lord, * and my mouth / shall proclaim your praise.

Second Reading Hebrews 5:1-10 Every high chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Tract

Holy John 12:20-33 Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. Fifth Sunday in Lent

Homily Fr. Jordan

The Prayer Book, pg. 358 Celebrant and People: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People Form I Prayer Book, pg. 383 The Reader will now read the prayers. After each prayer is the following response: Reader: Let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy.

With this brand new event, we are moving several of our normal Easter Sunday activities to Saturday so we can accommodate more people. We’ll be on the big back lawn behind the office and in the back parking lot area so there’s plenty of room for everyone. We’ll kick everything off with Interactive Stations of the Cross and photography sessions, then we’ll hold a full Easter Mass on the back lawn. Stay after Mass for the Easter Egg Hunt, petting zoo and lots of other great activities that everyone in the family is sure to enjoy. Childcare is available from 4:00-6:00pm. 4:00-5:00pm Interactive Stations of the Cross Photography Sessions for families and individuals 5:00-6:00pm Easter Mass (bring a chair) 6:00-7:30pm Easter Egg Hunt, Petting Zoo, Inflatables, Carnival Games & Food Truck • Interactive Stations of the Cross - A really incredible experience, perfect for all ages, with an interactive activity at each station that helps you understand in a deeper way what Jesus experienced on His way to Calvary. Put on by our Youth Groups. • Photography Sessions - Whether you’re dressed up in your Easter finery or prefer a more casual look, you can have a professional photograph taken of your family or just of yourself. Feel free to bring a change of clothes for all the fun activities after Mass. • Easter Mass - Come Saturday instead of Sunday morning! This is a full Easter Mass, similar to the 8:30am Easter Sunday Mass, not our traditional Easter Vigil service (don’t worry, it’ll be back next year!). We’re holding it outdoors so there is plenty of room for everyone. Please bring a chair and join us on the back lawn behind the office for a beautiful outdoor service. • Easter Egg Hunt - Our traditional Egg Hunt will be held after the Mass has ended on the back lawn (this will be instead of having it on Easter Sunday morning). The hunt is for kids age 5th grade and under and will be divided by age. If you have a child hunting (or even if you don’t!) please bring 12-18 eggs per child, filled with individually wrapped candy, stickers, trinkets, etc. to the boxes in the Church Narthex. Kids should bring a basket for their eggs and parents should be ready for some great photo ops! • Petting Zoo, Inflatables, Carnival Games & Food Truck - Stay after the Egg Hunt and enjoy lots of great family activities and social time with your St. Laurence family. Easter Brunch - On Easter Sunday at 9:50am between the services, we’ll have an outdoor Easter brunch complete with mimosas and light finger food (all food will be catered and served to you). Spaghetti will still be served! If you would like to donate items for the meal, please sign up at the table outside Church between the services today or contact Trudy Baade at [email protected]. You can also make a monetary donation and we will buy the food for you. Go to the Give Tab on our website at saintlaurencechurch.org or drop a check in the collection plate. Study
