RUSS 608 Eighteenth-Century Russian Literature

Course Description A comprehensive survey of the main trends in eighteenth-century Russian literature. Topics of interest include: normative aesthetics; generic imports and generic diversity; the evolution of the Russian literary language; discourses of imperial statehood in literary, visual and material culture; the status of the writer, literary and political subjectivity.

Key figures under consideration include Trediakovsky, Lomonosov, Sumarokov, Novikov, Fonvizin, Derzhavin, Radishchev and Karamzin, among others.

It is essential to begin formulating your thoughts about each week‘s assignment as you read in preparation for class. To this end, I encourage you to mark up the texts as you read, highlight passages you find particularly striking or difficult, write comments in the margins.

In addition to this, I ask that you take part in our online Forum. (You‘ll find it on the classesv2 site.) These assignments are meant to prompt you to think formally about the texts before you arrive in the classroom.

Each post should be approximately 1-1.5 pages single-spaced and should consist of 1) a close reading of a short passage drawn from the primary text and 2) a brief and articulate response to the issues raised by the required secondary readings. On most occasions, I will suggest specific passages for the close reading portion of the assignment.

Conributions to the Forum are due 24 hours before each class meeting. You may miss up to two without penalty.
