AboutLeiden

Leiden has 116.936 inhabitants. It is a lively University town, with a lot of different shops, bars, restaurants, theatres, museums and movies for everybody’s taste. The university attracts a lot of foreign students, scientific staff and internationalbusinesswhichgivesLeidenaveryinternationalatmosphere,mostpeopledospeakEnglish. LeidenisbetweenDenHaag,Amsterdam,Schipholandandhasgoodrailroadconnectionstothesecities.Intheory Leidenhasgoodfreewayconnectionsbutduringmorningandeveningtraffic‘spits’it’softendifficulttoenterorleave Leidenbycar.AsHollandissoflatandeverythingisreasonablycloseby,thebesttransportisbybike,especiallyinLeiden towncentre.Thereisalsogoodbustransportsystem. Leidentowncentretriestobepedestrianfriendly.Thereareafewbigparkinglotsaroundtheoldcitycentrefromwhere youcanstrollintothecity.Leidenhasgotseveralfestivalsfromwhich‘Leidensontzet’isthebiggestandmostfamous.As soon the weather permits (not raining!) Leiden has got a lot of sidewalk cafés. Leiden contains, beside the city centre, severalneighbourhoods,andisalmostonewithLeiderdorp,OegstgeestandVoorschoten(seefollowingpagesfortownby towndescription).Themorerecentneighbourhoods(notolderthan30years)areWaardeiland,Merenwijk,Stevenshof, RoompotandarepopularwithElckerlycparentsasverychildfriendly. Leidenhasgotafewparks,isonly10kilometresfromthecoast(sea,beach,dunes,forest)andisinthegreenpartofWest Holland(polders,bollenvelden).There’sasystemofseveralmaintainedplaygroundsvia‘speeltuinverenigingen’(seepage 25forasmalllist). Leidenisreasonablychildsafe,althoughitlooksdifferentwhenyouseehoweverybodybehavesintraffic! Therearealotofpossibilitiesforinternationaleducation,coursesandworkshopsofallkind.MostpeoplecanspeakEnglish andarewillingto. Leidenhasgot2hospitals;oneofthemistheLeidenUniversityMedicalCentre(LUMC).Nextdoortothe‘Diaconessen Hospital’isafamilydoctor,whichisveryhandyforparkingandclosetotheservicesofahospital.Therearelotoffamily doctorsanddentistsaroundinLeiden. Leiderdorp Leiderdorp,inwhichtheElckerlycschoolissituated,has26720residentsandisasmallsatellitetowntothesoutheastof Leiden.Itis(trafficpermitting)a10minutedriveora15minutebicycleridetothecentreofLeidenfromLeiderdorp,andso thefacilitiesoftheformerarereadilyavailable.ItisfurtherdividedintotheVoorhof(inwhichElckerlycissituated)the Leyhof, Binnenhof, Buitenhof, De Schansen, Vogelwijk, Zijlkwartier, Elisabethhof, Cuderzorg, Kerkwijk, Oranjewijk and Doeskwartier.

Leiderdorp also has one of the area’s biggest shopping centres specialising in furniture and home furnishingscalledthe“Wooonmeubelplein”withinwalkingdistanceoftheschool. TheLeiderdorpGeementehuis(TownHall)isadjacenttotheWinkelhof.Informationaboutthetown’sfacilitiescanbe foundhere.Alsothefollowingwebsite(Dutchonly):www.leiderdorp.nl Leiderdorpischildfriendlyandhasalovelybigwoodedareacalledthe“ParkDeHoutkamp”whichissituatednearthe school. This is a large park with a children’s play areaand a “Dierenpark” (animal park). Children can enter the animal enclosureafter2:30pm.Thereisalsoanexcellentindoor/outdoorrestaurantneartheanimals. Thereisalso“DeBloemerd”,arecreationalareasituatedontheeastsideofLeiderdorp.AFootballClubissituatedhereas arehorseridingfacilitiesandplayareasforchildren.Othersportingfacilitiesincludelocalswimmingpools“DeDoes”and the “Zijl”, another swimming centre which is technically in Leiden but situated close to Engelendaal (Leiderdorp’s main road). BusesaretheonlyformofpublictransportinLeiderdorp.Bustimetablescanbefoundatthebusstops.Mostbusestravel viaLeidenCentraalBusandTrainstation.FromhereitispossibletocatchthetraintoAmsterdamorTheHague(andother destinations). Leiderdorp is quite spread out and as such, even if you live in this town, this does not mean you will necessarilybeabletocometoschoolonfoot,thoughcyclingisagoodsolution. NB:therearecurrentlymajorroadworksonWillemdeZwijgerlaan–oneofthemainroadsgivingaccesstoLeiderdorp fromLeidenandborderingtownstotheNorth/East.Thesewilllastuntil2012!Bustravelthereforetakeslongerthanusual.

Oegstgeest OegstgeestisaquainttownneighbouringthecityofLeiden.Itcoversanareaof7.75km2andhas22,576inhabitants(in 2008).11percentofthatpopulationbeingexpatriates!Itscharmisablendofarchitecturesdatingbacktotheearly1900's tothenewerestatesofPoelgeest(2000)andNieuwRhijngeestbeingestablishedin2006. TheKempenaerstraatandtheLangeVoortshoppingareasofferadiversityofshoppingpossibilitiesfittocatertomorethan anindividual'sdailyneeds. Playgrounds are in abundance and there are numerous recreational activities offered in Oegstgeest (e.g. swimming, footballandhockey). Elckerlyc International School - Welcoming Committee Supplementary Information for Parents 7 Warmond WarmondisavillagenorthofLeiden,nexttothelargertownofOegstgeest.Themunicipalitycoversanareaof14.42km² (5.57mile²)ofwhich4.42km²(1.71mile²)iswater!Ithasapopulationofaround5000andislesspopulatedbyexpatriates thantheneighbouringOegstgeestprobablyowingtoslightlyhigherhousepricesandlessrentaloptions.Togetherwith SassenheimandVoorhout,itbecamepartofthemunicipalityonJanuary1,2006.Warmondislocatedinanarea calledthe"DuneandBulbRegion"(DuinenBollenstreek).Warmondisquitetouristyandhasaveryquaintcobbledhigh streetwithmanyshops,restaurants(includingtheMoerbeiwhichhasaMichelenstar!),andasupermarketAlbertHeijn whichisoneofthefewtoopenonaSunday. ParkinginWarmondisdifficultbutitisahavenforbikesandboats!EveryyearinSeptemberthereisaBoatfestivalandthe biggestattractionofthetownforvisitorsandresidentsistheKoudenhoornrecreationalareawith“dogfree”grassyareas, ferryboat(small!!)enablingvisitorstowalkonthepolders,asmallbeachwithsectionedoffswimmingarea,aplaypark andacaféwhichmiraculouslyopenswhenitknowspeoplewillbethere! SchoolinganddaycareisinDutchonly.Thetownhasallthefacilitiesthatoneneeds. Transport(toandfromschool&Leiden/TheHague)ispossiblebybusandthejourneybycartoLeidenis10min/schoolis 20min…..onagoodday!

Voorschoten VoorschotenisatowntotheSouthWestofLeidenwithapopulationofapproximately23000.Thetownhasquitealarge expatriatepopulationmainlyowingtotheBritishSchoolwhichhasitsseniorsectionhere.Thetownhasallthefacilities needed and is well located between Leiden and The Hague.The “old” centre of the town is typically Dutch and atmospheric(especiallyduringtheannualHorseShowheldinAugust!). The town hasa train station (2 stops from Leiden), 3 supermarkets, acouple of banks, DIY shop,post office, chemists, clothesshops,cheeseshop,2butchers,hairdressers,toyshopsplusseveralrestaurantsifyouliketoeatout.Thetownalso hasseveraleventsintheyear:TheWeekendOfVoorschoten,OldTimersDay,Jazzweekends,plusantiquemarkets,and geraniummarketsetc.ItisalsoclosetotheA44andA4motorway,allowinggoodandeasyaccesstoAmsterdam/DenHaag etc.Itishalfanhour’sdriveortrainjourneytoSchipolairport,andapproximately40mintrainjourneytoAmsterdam. Elckerlyc International School - Welcoming Committee Supplementary Information for Parents 8 Voorhout Voorhoutisasmalltownwithapopulationofaround18,000people.ThereareafewexpatsherebutaremainlyDutch residents.Voorhoutissurroundedbybulbfieldsandlooksspectacularinthespring.Thereisalsoaflowerfestivalthat passesthroughVoorhouteveryApril.Thisattractsalotoftouristsandroadsareclosedmostoftheday.Itisapproximately 12kmfromElckerlycschoolinLeiderdorpandbycar,onagoodday,youcanbetherein20minutes.Onabadday,itcan takeupto45minutes(thisisrare).Therearenodirectlinksbybus,ortraintoLeiderdorp.Itwouldmean,goinginto Leidenandcatchingabusthatdropsyouoff5minfromschool. TherearegoodtransportlinksinVoorhout.ThereisatrainstationandVoorhoutisnexttotheA44motorway,whichtakes youeitherinthedirectionofAmsterdamortoTheHague.Amsterdamisapprox33kmandTheHagueisapprox20km. TherentalmarketiscomparativetotheotherareasaroundVoorhout,ie.Sassenheim,Leiden,Warmondetc.butbuyinga houseinVoorhout,canbequiteexpensive.TherearenorundownareasinVoorhoutandthetownisinacatchmentarea, whereyoupaythatbitmoreforahouse. Thereareplentyofplayareasforthechildren.Thereareseverallittleparksamongsttheestatesandtheytendtobevery safe.Thereareoftensignsupthatwarndriversthatitisthechildrensandcyclistsrightofway.Asmostoftheresidentsin VoorhoutareDutch,mostchildrentendtopickthelanguageupveryeasilyastheysocialisewiththeDutchchildren.There areDutchprimaryandsecondaryschoolsinVoorhoutbutmoreinformationcouldbegainedfromthelocalgemeente.

Wassenaar Ifyouareinneedofhearingyourhomelanguage,you'resuretohearitinWassenaar.Wassenaarissituatedtothenorth ofTheHague/ScheveningenandtothesouthwestofLeiden.Itisknownasoneofthemostbeautifulvillagesofthe DutchNorthSeashoreareaandishometoalargeexpatcommunityfromallpartsoftheworld.

WassenaarhasgoodaccesstotheA44(DenHaagAmsterdam)andis12kmfromtheschoolandtakesbetween20to30 minutestodrivetoschooldependingontraffic.

Sports are very important in Holland, especially soccer. Every major city has its own team: Ajax (Amsterdam), PSV (Eindhoven)andFeyenoord()havegainedinternationalfame.DutchsocietyvirtuallyshutsdownduringWorld Cupevents,whilethepopulationliterallypaintthemselvesandtheirsurroundingsorange(thecolouroftheRoyalHouse) whenTheNetherlandsareplaying.Alltownshaveanextensivearayofsportsclubsandsportingactivitiesonoffer.

Anotherfavouritesportisskating.Duringacoldwinter,allDutchpeoplewillgocrazy.Thatisbecauseduringareallycold winter,everyonelooksforwardtotheElfstedentocht;thatis,ifittakesplace.TheElfstedentocht,an11citymarathonon ice,coversacourseofalmost200kilometres.Fromtowntotownhugenumbersofspectatorsbravethecoldtocheerthe thousandsofskaters.Leeuwarden,thecapitalofFriesland,hasalwaysbeenthestartand finish. For the 11city marathon to actually happen, the ice needs to be at least15 centimetresthick,coveringvirtuallythewholeroute!From1909thishasonlyhappened15 times.ThelastElfstedentochttookplacein1997.

Dutchculturemaybetotallydifferentfromyourown,soitmaybewisetoreadsomethingaboutDutchculturebeforeyou arriveinTheNetherlands.Theexperienceofculturaldifferencescanbestrange,butalsoenriching.Hereisasmallaccount ofwhattoexpect.

Oneofthefirstthingsthatyouwillnoticeisthatpeopledonotalwaysintroducethemselvesverywell.Ontheotherhand, itisgenerallyappreciatedifyoutaketheinitiativetointroduceyourself.Thismaybedifferentwhenyoumeetsomeone whoisolderorinsomewayseniortoyourself.Inthiscase,itispolitetowaituntiltheotherapproachesyou.

Dutch people are rather reserved at first about their private life.But, once you get to know them better andthey do discuss their personal lives, there are not many non discussablesubjects.

Dutch people like to agree with each other. They dislike radical standpoints and usually try to see the other person's position.
