The Idea of Subversion and an Exploration of Style DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulf The Fantastic in the 1960s and 1970s: the Idea of Subversion and an Exploration of Style DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ying Yu Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Richard Torrance, Advisor Shelley Fenno Quinn Naomi Fukumori Copyright by Ying Yu 2010 Abstract This study provides a general picture of the literature of the fantastic as produced by Japanese writers in the 1960s and 1970s. It defines the modern fantastic in the second chapter as the embodiment of the moment of hesitation between natural and supernatural explanation. I show that in the 1960s and 1970s it was a literature of subversion. In the third chapter, the formation of the Japanese fantastic is introduced. Shibusawa Tatsuhiko and Tanemura Suehiro‟s introduction of Mannerism and the contents of magazine Blood and Roses are analyzed. This chapter also includes a discussion of how the fantastic in the 1960s and 1970s was inspired by opposition to the realism that critics maintained dominated postwar literary world. The fourth chapter mainly focuses on Shibusawa Tatsuhiko. His encyclopedic works, translated works of Marquis de Sade, and his experimental creation of fantastic works are discussed. These fictions of Shibusawa are examined to illustrate that he was obsessed with crafting an aesthetic and high stylization and to illustrate the features of his style, language, narrative, and the structure of his works. Chapter five concerns on two Shinseinen writers, Oguri Mushitarō and Yumeno Kyūsaku whose resurgent popularity was inspired during the 1960s.Their mystery fiction echoes the same subversive features of the fantastic: the creating of a real world only to disrupt it with the unreal and making the representation of the real the target of representation. Nakai Hideo‟s mystery fiction in the 1960s is also ii discussed in this chapter to clarify the connection between the fantastic writers and early Shinseinen writers. Chapter six argues there is a strong connection between the fantastic and previous literary forms: gesaku and kaidan. With the analysis of Ueda Akinari and Izumi Kyōka, we find that these works and the fantastic in the 1960s and 1970s all reflect prior literary forms for the purpose of parody, therefore gaining the power of subversion to escape the restrictions of time and create new forms. In chapter seven, mainstream writers such as Ishikawa Jun and Mishima Yukio, who use fantasy elements, themes, and narrative techniques, are discussed. The all pervasive influence of the fantastic in the present day culture is also examined. In short, the main purpose of this study is to use the fantastic as a new perspective on modern Japanese literature and to explore modern writers‟ pursuit of various possibilities in literary expression. The fantastic in the 1960s and 1970s begins with the intention of undermining the domination of Japanese naturalism. However, by bringing to the fore a wealth of existing literary forms, from kaidan to Izumi Kyōka, from the detective stories in Shinseinen to the fiction of intellectuals, the writers of the fantastic undercut the idea that Japanese naturalism was dominate, and this demolished the reason for the existence of the fantastic as a serious literary movement. The fantastic, thus, was dissolved into popular entertainments; it was soon overcome by trite and came to be consumed as a popular entertainment literature that displayed the bizarre, erotic, and grotesque. iii Dedication This document is dedicated to my family. iv Acknowledgments My deepest gratitude and thanks go to my advisor Dr. Richard Torrance. The recent release by Criterion on DVD of Paul Schrader’s film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and Mishima’s own film Patriotism (1965) has caused the author of this essay to reconsider his relation- ship with the late Japanese writers’ books and literary legacy. Believing that these fine films’ presence on DVD will stimulate much renewed discussion of Mishima both in the US and Japan, the author recalls his first discovery of Mishima’s existence shortly after his famous suicide in 1970, reading and responding to his literary output, and prodding famous authors such as Tennessee Williams and Cormac McCarthy for their thoughts on Mishima’s influence. The attention- getting ne of intimacy is the particle ne that is used within utterances with a flat or a rising intonation. It is commonly assumed that this attention-getting ne is frequently used by children as well as women. Feminine connotations attached to this attention-getting ne when used by men are also noted. The attention-getting ne of intimacy is also said to connote both intimate and over-friendly impressions. On the other hand, recent studies on Japanese femininity have proposed new images that portrays figures of immature and feminine women. Assuming the similarity between the attention-getting ne and new images of Japanese femininity, this thesis aims to reveal the relationship between them. In order to investigate listeners’ perceptions of women who use the attention- getting ne of intimacy with respect to femininity, this thesis employs the matched-guise technique as its primary methodological choice using the presence of attention-getting ne of intimacy as its variable. In addition to the implicit reactions obtained in the matched- guise technique, people’s explicit thoughts regarding being onnarashii ‘womanly’ and kawairashii ‘endearing’ were also collected in the experiment.

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively).

Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power.

By analyzing the social and linguistic influences of the reception and adaptation of Chinese vernacular fiction, I hope to improve our understanding of genre development and linguistic diversification in early modern Japanese literature. This dissertation historically and linguistically contextualizes the vernacularization movements and adaptations of Chinese texts in the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, showing how literary importation and localization were essential stimulants and also a paradigmatic shift that generated new platforms for Japanese literature. Chapter 1 places the early introduction of vernacular Chinese language in its social and cultural contexts, focusing on its route of propagation from the Nagasaki translator community to literati and scholars in Edo, and its elevation from a utilitarian language to an object of literary and political interest. Central figures include Okajima Kazan (1674-1728) and Ogyû Sorai (1666-1728). Chapter 2 continues the discussion of the popularization of vernacular Chinese among elite intellectuals, represented by the Ken’en School of scholars and their Chinese study group, “the Translation Society.” This chapter discusses the methodology of the study of Chinese by surveying a number of primers and dictionaries compiled for reading vernacular Chinese and comparing such material with methodologies for reading classical Chinese.

Torres, Chair Education knows no boundaries but hot button topics, like comic books, demonstrate school, teacher and parent limitations. Japanese comic books (manga) are a litmus test of pedagogical tolerance. Because they play an important role in the lives of most Taiwanese teenagers, I give them pride of place in this dissertation. To understand Japanese comic books and their influence, I use Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy to combine perspectives from cultural studies, comparative education, and educational sociology. With the cooperation of the administration, faculty and students of a Taiwanese junior high school, I used surveys, a textual analysis of five student-selected titles and interviews with students and educators. I discovered that Japanese manga contain complex and sometimes contradictory ideologies of ethnicity, gender, class, and violence. From an ethnic perspective, although students may glean cultural content from manga heroes and their retinues, people of color and non-Japanese Asians are either caricatures or non-existent; although Taiwanese teenager readers seem unaware of this. From a gender standpoint, neither the female characters’ provocative representation nor the male characters’ slavering responses to it raise students’ and teachers’ concerns.
