THESIS ADVISOR: PROFESSOR KEN TAYLOR. 202 pp. The setting conservation around the cultural heritage place is to ensure to protect the significant value of that cultural heritage place. A buffer zone is an effective tool for protecting the significant value of the cultural heritage place, if it has been established circumspectly. The goals of the study were to (1) To suggest the criteria for appropriate delineation of the buffer zone and to integrate into land use planning to protect the values of the cultural heritage place in the historic urban area; and (2) To suggest guidelines to control and manage setting within the buffer zone of the cultural heritage place in the historic urban area. The objectives of the study were to (1) To review the concept of the buffer zone and case studies of implementation of buffer zone in other countries; (2) To review land use planning, regulations, guidelines, and relevant laws for cultural heritage conservation in Thailand and other countries; (3) To identify both King Narai’s Palace and settings’ characteristic of cultural environment caused by development regarding to historical, cultural and socio-economic dimension; (4) To analyze limitations and requirements of surrounding communities, related institutions for conservation and land use planning; and (5) To integrate delineation of the buffer zone into the land use planning to be an effective legal mechanism for urban historic conservation. Qualitative and quantitative analysis method were used to analyzed the background information, especially, case studies of buffer zone implementation in various documents were analyzed by the analytic induction. This study has three keys implementations. (1) the criteria of delineation of buffer zone for the cultural heritage place in the historic urban area; (2) the management guidelines within the buffer zone; and (3) integration with urban land use planning. This study can define the criteria for delineation the buffer zone for cultural heritage place in the historic urban area, and management guidelines for control the condition within the buffer zone. Mueng district of Lopburi Province is one of the greatest conflict areas in Thailand, where public health concerns of zoonoses transmission from monkey - bites and scratches are high. Currently, there is no epidemiological research of monkey-related injuries in Thailand. Objectives: The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of monkey-related injuries and investigate the trends and characteristics of the injured cases in Mueng District, Lopburi Province, in 2013 - 2017. Methods: A cross - sectional analytical study was conducted to compare monkey-related injuries and investigate the incidences between locals, Thai, and foreign tourists by collecting secondary data from medical records in 3 hospitals in the study area. The cumulative incidences were used to calculate relative risk between the tourists and the locals. The characteristics of the injury cases are presented by frequency and percentage. Results: Yearly incidences of locals, Thais, and foreign tourists were in the ranges of 9.16 - 18.33, 190.16 - 379.13, and 254.07 – 736.91 per 100,000 population, respectively. The trend of injury was remarkably higher in foreign tourists.

    Long-term Strategies for Thai Heritage Preservation: Civil Roles in Lopburi Province Phuthorn Bhumadhon I strongly believe that, at present, the preservation of Thai heritage (by which I particularly mean physical sites such as religious monuments, communal buildings, historical sites and ancient artifacts, which should be taken care of by everyone including the responsible governmental agencies) is in a critical and problematic state. Thai people fail to preserve the value of cultural heritage to hand down to future generations. Instead, they allow it to be encroached upon and damaged for the sake of infrastructure development such as roads, irrigation canals and dams. The problems are many: expansion of settlements; lack of appreciation of the value of heritage; failure to implement laws; officials in charge of heritage who neglect their ethical and creative duty; renovation by improper methods; and vote-seeking politicians who allow historical sites to be encroached. Everywhere, public good is sacrificed for personal benefit, and ignorance and corruption prevail. With more than three decades of experience in active participation in Thai cultural heritage preservation in Lopburi Province, I am able to state that this is an era when the attempts at preservation of Thai cultural heritage are hopelessly ineffective. The efforts of those who are intent on preserving Thai heritage will probably do no more than delay the destruction a little, because the process of destruction proceeds at a rate one hundred times faster than the efforts of preservation. Thai society today is focused on a limited number of concerns. Capitalism flourishes much more than spiritual values. Political factions fight for power to run the country.

It was divided by age according to the era of the various places, and solved by creating three-dimensional models which was a research method with the objective of 1) to build an archaeological site that is the main point in all three dimensions according to the era, 2) to create a tourist map of the Old City in Lop Buri Province in a three-dimensional model, 3) to assess the satisfaction of users of the Old Town Tourism Map in Lop Buri Province, and 4) to transfer technology to interested parties or interested agencies which began by bringing information from books and analyze concepts for use in event planning. It consisted of collecting data in a multi-angle, horizontal real-time shooting for creating historic sites in a three-dimensional model to import into a two-dimensional tourist map model. Target group are interested parties and 80 tourists. Research findings showed that the overall satisfaction level was at a high level.

    Thailand in seinen Grenzen von heute war in Teilen und zu gewissen Zeiten Bestandteil oder Anhängsel der Khmer-Königreiche. Der Nordosten war sogar das Heimterritorium der mächtigsten Königsdynastie des Angkor-Reiches (9. bis 15. Jahrhundert). Aus diesem Grund ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass in Thailand zahlreiche Kunst- und Bauwerke un- ter dem Einfluss der Khmer vor und während der Angkor-Zeit entstanden sind. Der Bayon-Stil unter König Jayavarman VII. beispielsweise ist im Westen, im Zentrum und im Nordosten mit Bauten und Bauteilen präsent: die Burganlage Müang Sing (Provinz Kanchanaburi), Phetchaburi mit dem Wat Kamphaeng Laeng, Ratchaburi, Lopburi (Phra Prang Sam Yot), Sukhothai (Wat Phra Phai Luang und Wat Si Sawai). Repräsen- tative Bauwerke der Khmer-Architektur finden sich in Phimai (Provinz Nakhon Ratchasima), Khao Phanom Rung und Müang Tam (Provinz Buriram) sowie Sikho- raphum (Provinz Surin). Die Tempelanlage Preah Vihear (Khao Phra Viharn) in Kam- bodscha liegt nahe an der thailändischen Grenze. Angesichts dieser architektonischen Präsenz Kambodschas in Thailand ist es wenig erstaunlich, dass sich auch die Kunst Thai- lands über eine lange Periode an die Stile der Khmer anlehnt. Prakhonchai-Stil (8. bis 9. Jahrhundert) Im unscheinbaren nordostthailändischen Städtchen Prakhonchai (Provinz Buriram) kamen 1964 rund 300 Bronzefiguren zum Vorschein. Sie wurden in einer unterirdischen Kammer über Jahrhunderte gehortet, ohne dass jemand davon wusste. Die schönsten Exemplare gelangten in mehrere Museen der USA. Fast identische Figuren stammen aus dem Dorf Ban Fai derselben Provinz, heute im Nationalmuseum in Bangkok. In unmittelbarer Nähe zu Prakhonchai befin- den sich bedeutende Heiligtümer der Khmer (Phanom Rung, Müang Tam), die aber zeitlich nach den Skulpturen von Prakhonchai entstanden sind.

This qualitative research was conducted from May 2011 to May 2012 using the research tools of survey, observation, interview, focus group discussion and workshop. Aimed at assessing the current conditions and problems with preservation of ceremonies in three Thai prang temples, this investigation highlights domestic and foreign tourism as major threats to heritage maintenance. The emphasis on maximisation of tourism revenue, prioritising the tourist experience and central government control has weakened local community influence and reduced the number of ‘living’ prang-related ceremonies. Of those ceremonies that do exist, few directly concern the prang, which instead provide a dramatic and scenic backdrop for tourists to admire.

Nicolas Revire1 Abstract Most scholars think that the generic name ‘Golden Land’ (Sanskrit, Suvarṇabhūmi; Pali, Suvaṇṇabhūmi) was first used by Indian traders as a vague designation for an extensive region beyond the subcontinent, presumably in Southeast Asia. Some Pali sources specifically link Suvaṇṇabhūmi with the introduction of Buddhism to the region. The locus classicus is the Sri Lankan Mahāvaṃsa chronicle (fifth century AD) which states that two monks, Soṇa and Uttara, were sent there for missionary activities in the time of King Asoka (third century BC). However, no Southeast Asian textual or epigraphic sources refer to this legend or to the Pali term Suvaṇṇabhūmi before the second millennium AD. Conversely, one may ask, what hard archaeological evi- dence is there for the advent of Buddhism in mainland Southeast Asia? This article re-examines the appropriation of the name Suvaṇṇabhūmi in Thailand and Burma for political and nationalist purposes and deconstructs the connota- tion of the term and what it has meant to whom, where, and when. It also care- fully confronts the Buddhist literary evidence and earliest epigraphic and archaeological data, distinguishing material discoveries from legendary accounts, with special reference to the ancient Mon countries of Rāmaññadesa (lower Burma) and Dvāravatı̄(central Thailand).

His original name was Somdej Phrachaolukyather Chaofa Chulalongkorn. He was the favorite son of King Rama IV and always joined both long and short trips away with King Rama IV. Once he grew up he was responsible for all assigned missions throughout his Kingdom. He was fi rst educated by Kromluang Worasethasuda, who was highly qualifi ed in general knowledge and royal customs and traditions.

I worked with the “Consortium” organization under the administrative of UNHCR. The camp was at Phanat Nikhom, Chonburi, Thailand. I had good social relationship with all of my refugee students in the camp with all clans, tribes and countries. Especially for the Khmers, I learnt Khmer language and Khmer dance. I was fascinated with their arts so much. Apart from this, I took my Ph.D. topic from one part of my previous M.A. thesis “Some aspect of Buddhist arts in Thailand”. Its chapter “Lopburi art” helped me very much to make further studies on details of my present work on this Ph.D. thesis. I am proud of my work and give very much gratitude and my thanks to many persons.
