This qualitative research was conducted from May 2011 to May 2012 using the research tools of survey, observation, interview, focus group discussion and workshop. Aimed at assessing the current conditions and problems with preservation of ceremonies in three Thai prang temples, this investigation highlights domestic and foreign tourism as major threats to heritage maintenance. The emphasis on maximisation of tourism revenue, prioritising the tourist experience and central government control has weakened local community influence and reduced the number of ‘living’ prang-related ceremonies. Of those ceremonies that do exist, few directly concern the prang, which instead provide a dramatic and scenic backdrop for tourists to admire.

  • Facts and Fiction: the Myth of Suvaṇṇabhūmi Through the Thai
TRaNS: Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Southeast Asia Vol. 6, No. 2 (July) 2018: 167–205. © Institute for East Asian Studies, Sogang University 2018 doi:10.1017/trn.2018.8 Facts and Fiction: The Myth of Suvaṇṇabhūmi Through the Thai and Burmese Looking Glass “Camelot, located no where in particular, can be anywhere” (Lacy 1991: 66-67). Nicolas Revire1 Abstract Most scholars think that the generic name ‘Golden Land’ (Sanskrit, Suvarṇabhūmi; Pali, Suvaṇṇabhūmi) was first used by Indian traders as a vague designation for an extensive region beyond the subcontinent, presumably in Southeast Asia. Some Pali sources specifically link Suvaṇṇabhūmi with the introduction of Buddhism to the region. The locus classicus is the Sri Lankan Mahāvaṃsa chronicle (fifth century AD) which states that two monks, Soṇa and Uttara, were sent there for missionary activities in the time of King Asoka (third century BC). However, no Southeast Asian textual or epigraphic sources refer to this legend or to the Pali term Suvaṇṇabhūmi before the second millennium AD. Conversely, one may ask, what hard archaeological evi- dence is there for the advent of Buddhism in mainland Southeast Asia? This article re-examines the appropriation of the name Suvaṇṇabhūmi in Thailand and Burma for political and nationalist purposes and deconstructs the connota- tion of the term and what it has meant to whom, where, and when. It also care- fully confronts the Buddhist literary evidence and earliest epigraphic and archaeological data, distinguishing material discoveries from legendary accounts, with special reference to the ancient Mon countries of Rāmaññadesa (lower Burma) and Dvāravatı̄(central Thailand).

Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University A Buddhist University of the Thai Sangha Supervised by the State and under the Ministry of Education Pan~ n~ - Wisdom is the light of the world Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University 1 Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University 2 Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Foreword Over the years Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University has from time to time made available a few books and brochures, in both English and Thai, on its own history, academic, social and missionary programs. They have been published for the benefit of the wider audience as well as of prospective students. Much of the information in those previous literatures is still relevant. However, this information book is unique in some way in that it focuses on some points to which little attention has been paid previously. Attempts have been, nevertheless, made to bring the attention of the reader, although by no means extensively, mostly through photos, to two important developments. The first is about the large new campus that Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University has been building at Wang Noi, just outside Ayutthaya. This big main campus, reflecting the inspiration and effort of the university, should be officially open next year. And, the University has been active internationally; for over two decades internationalization of Buddhist studies has taken place; this university has been very much a part of it and this is evident, partly, in its International Programs both for the master's level and doctoral level and partly in the university's participation in academic, social and religious affairs in different parts of the world. Although, again, due to time-constraint, many excellent pictures have been deliberately left out, this outward looking approach is highlighted in many of the photos in the second part of this book.

  • 9 Temples Visit Tour: the Pilgrimage in Fast Life Culture
9 Temples Visit Tour: The Pilgrimage in Fast Life Culture Sura Piriyasanguanpong Thai Khadi ResearchInstitute, ThammasatUniversity, Thailand -------------------------------------------- The 9 Temples visit tours have recently become popular during the past years as an activity that combines tourism and religion together. The starting point is in Bangkok before expanding to other regions. The activities are varied depending on the organizers and region backgrounds. However, it is necessary to clarify that there has been previous studies on the topic of 9 Temples visit tours. Yet, those studies focused on the activities as a form of tourism, and the analysis of weakness and strength in activity's management. Hence, the study focusing on historical and archaeological perspectives could be an important aspect which led to an understanding of the origin of 9 Temples visit tours. Besides, this might lead to more extensive considerations of the activity value and more benefits to the participants. Although the writer mentioned about the recent beginning of 9 Temples visit tours, the nature of the activities is still considered to be "pilgrimage to worship." This is an activity that Buddhists have been practiced for a long time. At least, the mention of "pilgrimage to worship" can be traced back to Tripiṭaka. Suttanta Pitaka mentioned about pilgrimages to the Samvejaniya Sathan (Four Holy Sites of Buddhism) as "a place where virtuous sons with faith should see." As a result, we can assume that the pilgrimage to worship in Thai society has existed as long as the arrival of Buddhism. This includes the pilgrimages to the Four Holy Sites of Buddhism as well as other artifacts representing Buddha, such as Buddha footprint and Buddha relics.
