FC Basel 1893 coach welcomes his old employers FC Bayern München to Switzerland for the first leg of the clubs' round of 16 tie. • Vogel, a former Bayern youth coach, was assistant to when Basel lost twice to the Bavarian side in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage. While Bayern are appearing at this stage for the fourth consecutive campaign, Basel are competing in the last 16 of the modern UEFA Champions League for only the second time and have reached the quarter-finals only once – in 1973/74. Previous meetings • Bastian Schweinsteiger's 89th-minute strike earned Bayern a 2-1 win on their first visit to St. Jakob-Park on 28 September 2010. Schweinsteiger had cancelled out 's 18th-minute opener with a 56th-minute penalty. • The lineups were: Basel: Costanzo, Inkoom, Abraham, Ferati, Safari, Huggel ( 87), Yapi (Almerares 90), Shaqiri (Chipperfield 80), Stocker, Frei, Streller. Bayern: Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Badstuber, Pranjić, Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger, Altıntop (Gomez 46), Kroos (Olić 56), Müller, Klose (Tymoshchuk 77). • Louis van Gaal's Bayern prevailed again in Munich, Franck Ribéry (two) and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk scoring in a 3-0 victory that confirmed Basel's elimination. • Last season was the clubs' first encounter in UEFA competition though Bayern did face a Basel XI in the 1962/63 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Bayern won the first leg 3-0 and advanced after the second leg was not played. Match background • Basel will hope to claim another notable scalp having beaten Manchester United FC on their last outing in the competition – a 2-1 home victory that swept them into the last 16 as Group C runners-up. Yet they must improve their home record against opposition, with four defeats in five matches. • Group A winners Bayern have won six of their last nine UEFA Champions League away games, including a 1-0 success at FC Zürich in this season's play-offs. • Jupp Heynckes was also in charge when Bayern faced Neuchâtel Xamax FC in the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round. Bayern lost the first leg 2-1 – Lothar Matthäus scoring their away goal – and left it late to turn the tie around in Munich through Hans Pflügler (87) and Jürgen Wegmann (90). Team ties • Vogel coached Thomas Müller, Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Toni Kroos and Diego Contento during his time in Bayern's youth system from 1998 to 2007, which featured spells overseeing the Under-10, U13, U15 and U17 teams. • Schweinsteiger enjoys playing at St. Jakob-Park for, besides last season's double, he scored in successive games there at UEFA EURO 2008 – against Portugal in the quarter-finals and Turkey in the semi-finals. Lahm hit Germany's last-minute winner in that latter match. • Frei played for Borussia from 2006 to 2009. He appeared in their 2-1 German Cup final loss to Bayern in 2008 and that same year suffered a 5-0 Bundesliga away defeat by the Bavarian outfit, but did score twice in Dortmund's 3-2 league win in January 2007. • Ivica Olić scored for Hamburger SV against Basel in a 1-1 draw in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage. • Markus Steinhöfer began his career in Bayern's youth ranks and played for their reserves from 2003/04 to 2005/06. He later had spells with and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, while played for Eintracht between 2005 and 2007. • had four seasons in Germany at VfB Stuttgart from 2004 to 2007, playing alongside Lahm and Mario Gomez. His stay included a loan spell at 1. FC Köln. • Streller hit Switzerland's goal in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Germany in February 2007. Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Gomez were in the opposition lineup, Gomez scoring. Gomez struck twice more when Germany beat Frei and Huggel's Switzerland 4-0 in a St. Jakob-Park friendly in March 2008. Lahm and Schweinsteiger were also in Germany's team. • 's Australia lost 4-0 to Germany at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with Müller among the scorers. • Streller had a penalty saved when a Switzerland side also featuring Frei lost a shoot-out against a Ukraine team including Tymoshchuk in the last 16 of the 2006 World Cup.

FC Basel 1893: Heiko Vogel Date of birth: 21 November 1975 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Edenkoben Coaching career: FC Bayern München (youth), FC Ingolstadt 04 (assistant), FC Basel 1893 (assistant, head coach) • Had a low-key playing career, making several third-division appearances for Edenkoben but admitted he lacked application at the time; an injury prompted him to switch his attentions to university, where he studied sports science. • Was a youth coach at Bayern for nine years, meeting Thorsten Fink as the latter spent the final years of his playing career with the club's B team; the pair got to know each other better from 2005 onwards during frequent trips to Cologne, where they both attended the same coach licence course. • In January 2008 Fink asked Vogel to become his assistant coach at third division Ingolstadt; five months later the team won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, but both were released towards the end of 2008/09. • A few weeks later Vogel and Fink were on holiday together in Turkey when they learned of Basel's interest; initially said that landing the job would be like winning the lottery and on 9 June 2009 they signed the contract at the Swiss club. • Proved an immediate success, winning the double in the first season and landing another Super League title in 2011. Vogel was in charge of coordinating training sessions and video analysis of future opponents until October 2011, when Fink left for Hamburger SV and he stepped into the void at Basel.

FC Bayern München: Jupp Heynckes Date of birth: 9 May 1945 Nationality: German Playing career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), Hannover 96 Coaching career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), FC Bayern München (three times), Athletic Club (twice), Eintracht Frankfurt, CD Tenerife, Real Madrid CF, SL Benfica, FC Schalke 04, Bayer 04 Leverkusen • One of the best strikers in Bundesliga history, Heynckes hit 220 goals in 369 games for Mönchengladbach and Hannover from 1964 to 1978; won four titles and a German Cup with Mönchengladbach and was the league's top scorer in 1974 (30 goals) and 1975 (27). • Aged 34, replaced Udo Lattek as Mönchengladbach coach in 1979; mentored the young Lothar Matthäus but failed to win any trophies, losing to FC Bayern München in the 1983/84 German Cup final and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals three seasons later. • Replaced Lattek again in 1987, this time at Bayern, winning 1989 and 1990 titles; club general manager Uli Hoeness called his decision to sack Heynckes in October 1991 "the biggest mistake of my career". • Moved to Spain, earning Athletic Club a place in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup. His Tenerife side then reached 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi-finals, earning Heynckes a season as Madrid coach; led Los Merengues to UEFA Champions League glory in 1997/98 but left that summer. • Following a lean spell, stepped in as caretaker manager at Bayern in April 2009 following Jürgen Klinsmann's dismissal; replaced Bruno Labbadia as Leverkusen coach the same summer, beginning with German record run of 24 unbeaten Bundesliga games. His side finished second to in 2010/11, Heynckes leaving to take charge of Bayern for a third time at the end of the campaign.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 24 occasions although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • Ten ties have gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6 of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
