OVERVIEW

MetroPort Auckland is a proven concept which has gained wide acceptance in the Auckland market, since its inception in June 1999. MetroPort Auckland is ’s inaugural truly integrated intermodal cargo gateway that creates supply chain efficiencies. MetroPort has recently opened and is based on this successful model.

The driver behind the seamless delivery from Port of to the inland destination in Auckland, is the IT system Navis N4 (XPS) which allows the Tauranga Container Terminal (TCT) to plan and control the movement of import containers, off vessels and onto trains, destined for MetroPort Auckland. Annual throughput has increased from 32,000 TEU in the first year to now handling over 170,000 TEU per year.

KiwiRail provide the rail connection between MetroPort Auckland and the Tauranga Container Terminal. MetroPort Auckland is a Customs bonded area and fully licensed Ministry for Primary Industries site.

The ’s current arrangements with KiwiRail run through to May 2023 with preferential rights of renewal beyond that.

METROPORT ACCESSIBILITY

Location is the key to MetroPort Auckland’s success. It is well served by road; bordered by the region’s Northern, Southern and South Western motorways plus several other major arterial routes. Its proximity to Auckland’s main industrial, warehousing and distribution areas are a great advantage, with shorter transit times to end destinations, improving the overall supply chain efficiency.

As the MetroPort operation is intermodally focused, we have recognised that with rising fuel costs, road carriers are seeking all possible efficiencies in order to kept costs to importers to a minimum. We have worked very hard to ensure truck turnaround times at MetroPort have been the lowest in the Auckland market and they have been for some years now. The average turn time for the last 12 months is 18.5 minutes.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

ShuttleSelect

ShuttleSelect is MetroPort Auckland’s interactive web-based import delivery request tool. Customers (via a secure logon) can select the desired delivery window in which they require their containers to arrive at MetroPort Auckland. The delivery periods range from the first available trains after discharge (priority cargo) in order to expedite delivery of urgent cargo, or subject to business rules the option to delay delivery for up to five days, useful for when warehouses wish to stagger the arrival of cargo into their warehouse.

This ground-breaking tool allows the import market to tell us when they require their cargo, resulting in a significantly enhanced supply chain. ShuttleSelect also has various auto track and alert functions that keep customers informed of their cargo status.

MetroPort Auckland Interface

MetroPort Auckland is connected to the Tauranga Container Terminal’s IT systems via a high-speed Wide Area Network connection. This means users in MetroPort Auckland have access to Navis N4 in the same way as an operator in Tauranga.

The Port of Tauranga was the first in the world to operate SPARCS and N4 in a multi- terminal, intermodal configuration. Navis have now incorporated the Port's multi-terminal concept into their software for use worldwide.

This multi-terminal configuration is a significant asset in providing border control agencies confidence in our ability to maintain supply chain integrity.
