1 ULRICA HYDMAN VALLIEN 1938-2018 The 21st of March 2018, Ulrica Hydman Vallien left us. With great gratitude, we can look back on all the years that Ulrica formed Kosta Boda. Her way of expressing herself in glass and painting has become a signum for us. She was the embodiment of Swedish glass art. No Swedish artist could have claimed anywhere near the popularity of Ulrica Hydman Vallien. Whether collection or one-of-a-kind pieces, she placed the same passion into every work of her hands. With motifs from the innermost corners of human life, she has created a narrative glass art form with feminist and Biblical touches, alongside her utility glass. Tulips and snakes gure repeatedly in her own Paradise works. Assertive, controversial, beloved. 2 3 Appendix by artists. Reprinted from Heisey News, January, 1972 PROFILES of FORMER HEISEY EMPLOYEES #1 “My Visit with Paul Fairall” by Evelyn Allen Before I start telling about the things Paul and I talked about I would like to say, “You have to know Paul to love him.” At first meeting I sure didn’t think much of him, but, determined to know more about him, I went back to his little Antique Shop and found him quite a human being. On first meeting he told me I couldn’t afford a #1401 cobalt ash-tray he had for $15.00 (this was in 1967). I had news for him, I could afford it but he couldn’t have given it to me after that remark. Now, at the price they are selling for, I wish I had bought it just to show him. Since then I have been in his shop and purchased some very nice pieces of Heisey because Paul really does know his Heisey. Now to pass on to you the information Paul gave me about a little of his “life” at the Heisey Plant. Paul Fairall was born January 28, 1902. He graduated from the 8th grade at the age of 14. After that he had some private tutoring, went to night business college, and took a correspondence course. Soon after his graduation from the 8th grade his brother William (who friends knew as Pidge) came home from the Heisey plant one night and asked Paul if he wanted to go to work. Paul, who was just enjoying summer and the horses on the farm, reluctantly said “yes”.

  • Pair of Clear Glass Orrefors Decanters by Vicke Lindstrand Mid Century
Beautiful. Translucent. Elegant. Modern. How best to describe these incredible decanters designed by renowned Swedish glass designer Vicke Lindstrand in his early years with renowned glass company Orrefors. This decanter was made in two sizes and these are the smaller size. They are comprised of a stretched teardrop shaped body and long, slender and rounded stopper. They are stunning in their simplicity of form which is made more impacting by their absence of color allowing whatever contents to glow and shimmer. Vicke Lindstrand was born Victor Emanuel Lindstrand on November 27, 1904 in Gothenburg, Sweden and is a legend in glass making. He is considered among the most influential 20th-century glass artists. He began his career as a commercial illustrator but soon found work with Orrefors Glass Manufacturer. In 1950 he left Orrefors for Kosta Glasbruk as an artistic director and became their dominant designer retiring in 1973. Along with fellow glass designers, Edvin Ohrstrom and Knut Bergqvist, he invented the Ariel technique in glass blowing. Beyond his commercial work at Orrefors and Kosta he produced several massive public sculptures around the globe and his works are in the collections of museums worldwide. Lindstrand died on May 7, 1983 in Kosta, Sweden but his extensive collection of works will live on. Orrefors glassworks was founded in 1898 in Småland, Sweden on the previous site of an older iron works. Until 1913 they made primarily technical, medical and household glass. In 1914 under new ownership and management they began making crystal products including cut crystal and etched art glass. From that time forward Orrefors has excelled in all types of creative glass manufacture employing renowned artists and winning multiple awards.
