Beautiful. Translucent. Elegant. Modern. How best to describe these incredible decanters designed by renowned Swedish glass designer Vicke Lindstrand in his early years with renowned glass company Orrefors. This decanter was made in two sizes and these are the smaller size. They are comprised of a stretched teardrop shaped body and long, slender and rounded stopper. They are stunning in their simplicity of form which is made more impacting by their absence of color allowing whatever contents to glow and shimmer. Vicke Lindstrand was born Victor Emanuel Lindstrand on November 27, 1904 in Gothenburg, Sweden and is a legend in glass making. He is considered among the most influential 20th-century glass artists. He began his career as a commercial illustrator but soon found work with Orrefors Glass Manufacturer. In 1950 he left Orrefors for Kosta Glasbruk as an artistic director and became their dominant designer retiring in 1973. Along with fellow glass designers, Edvin Ohrstrom and Knut Bergqvist, he invented the Ariel technique in glass blowing. Beyond his commercial work at Orrefors and Kosta he produced several massive public sculptures around the globe and his works are in the collections of museums worldwide. Lindstrand died on May 7, 1983 in Kosta, Sweden but his extensive collection of works will live on. Orrefors glassworks was founded in 1898 in Småland, Sweden on the previous site of an older iron works. Until 1913 they made primarily technical, medical and household glass. From that time forward Orrefors has excelled in all types of creative glass manufacture employing renowned artists and winning multiple awards. They continue production today primarily at their glassworks in Kosta using techniques developed in Småland. This set of three petal bowls by Orrefors are titled Mayflower. There is one icy blue one, one buttercup yellow, and one minty green. Smaller at 5 1/8 inches in diameter and 3 ¾ inches tall but so beautifully designed by Jan Johansson long time designer for Orrefors. They were first created in 1994 and discontinued in 2010. These happen to still be in their original boxes. Each is signed on the bottom and retains their Orrefors Sweden shield sticker. Jan Johansson was born in 1942. He trained as a silversmith in Stockholm at the College of Arts, Crafts and Design. He began his career at Orrefors in 1969. His goal as an artist was in refining the optical effect of pure sculptural crystal. He is quoted as saying “I want to shape the crystal by controlling the light. If the light dies, so does the glass.” In my humble opinion he has done so with many of his designs. Price: $695 This is a fabulous piece of Scandinavian glass to add to your collection. Or maybe to begin it! This heavy blown glass vase is done in the Sommerso style which is a thick layer of clear glass encasing an inner colored layer. The colored layer in this case being a soothing gray green from the Dusk series by Nils Landberg for Orrefors. He did many shapes and sizes in this series. I would call this one a U or V shape. It is signed and numbered Orrefors 3538/4. It will look marvelous alone or in a group. Nils Otto Thorsten Landberg (1907-1991) was a Swedish glass designer and artist. He attended art school in Goteborg in 1924. In 1925 he continued his studies at Orrefors School for Engraving and subsequently began working at Orrefors. First as an engraver and then in 1934 as an artist and designer. He remained at Orrefors until 1972. He is best known for his Tulip or Tulpan series, which is a thin walled elegant glass tableware series, and his Dusk Sommerso Series of vases and vessels. He debuted his work at the Paris Exhibition in 1937 and exhibited at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. In 1957 he won the gold medal at the Milan Triennale. Nils Landberg is a renowned glass artist and represented publicly throughout Sweden; and in the collections of museums in Sweden, Germany and the United States.
