SHEEP DIVISION

QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING - All exhibitors must have received Quality Assurance training or testing through a UNL Extension program prior to the fair. Program attendance or completion of a test in the county extension office is required. Completion of training will be certified by county extension staff.

ARRIVAL TIME – All market lambs, breeding sheep, and bottle lambs must check-in between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on entry day, Thursday, August 11 and stay the entire fair.

MARKET LAMBS

MARKET LAMBS PREMIUMS: Purple, $6.00; Blue, $4.50; Red, $3.00; White, $1.50

TROPHIES: Champion and Reserve Champion Market Lamb.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR: Four Market Lambs (no individual animal may be shown in both Breeding and Market classes, but an individual animal may show in the Market class and the Performance class).

MINIMUM WEIGHTS FOR MARKET LAMBS - All market sheep weighing less than 100 pounds at show time will be allowed to show but will not be eligible for purple ribbons or allowed to compete for awards. A feeder lamb class may be created at the discretion of the superintendents.

IDENTIFICATION - To be eligible to show, the club member must have cared for the sheep starting no later than June 15 of current year. Market Lambs must be identified with official 4-H ear tags available at the Extension Office and be recorded on the ownership affidavit due in the Extension Office by June 15. All ewe lambs must carry an official USDA ID tag (part of the eradication program), in addition to 4-H identification. All market lambs to be shown at State Fair and AKSARBEN must be tagged with an official 4- H/FFA issued EID tag and have a DNA sample submitted by June 15.

Wether and ewe lambs are eligible for market classes. Short scrotum, cryptorchid, or ram lambs are not eligible as market lambs. All market sheep are recommended to be sheared within 10 days of the show. No color, dyes or stiffeners may be used. If necessary, the market lambs may be split into three divisions: 1) Black Face, 2) White Face and 3) Two-Colored Face. Within each division, classes will be split by weight. Wethers and ewes will show together.

MARKET LAMB BONUS Carhart Lumber, Bloomfield will be awarding cash prizes to the top purple market lambs exhibited by 4-H and FFA members. The Market Lamb Bonus will follow the 4-H Sheep Show. First Place - $75 Second Place - $50 Third Place - $25

CLUB PEN OF THREE, CLASS G031904 PREMIUMS: First, $5.00; Second, $3.75; Third, $2.50 Three (3) Market Lambs, must be owned by at least two (2) 4-H exhibitors. The 4-H’er may be involved in only 1 pen.

4-H and FFA PERFORMANCE SHEEP CONTEST, CLASS G031905 PREMIUMS: First, $5.00; Second, $4.00; Third, $3.00; Fourth, $2.00; Fifth, $1.00

Two Performance Lambs can be shown per exhibitor (lambs can show in the Performance Class and in the Market Lamb class). A trophy will be awarded to the Performance Sheep Champion. There will need to be a minimum of 3 exhibitors in the contest for the trophy to be awarded. To be considered for the Performance Contest, the sheep must be weighed at the official weigh-in on April 16. The final weight will be determined on the entry day. The final weight to qualify for the Rate of Gain contest must be 95 pounds. The performance lamb will be placed on live basis and given points based on ribbon placing: purple - 4; blue - 3; red - 2; and white - 1. The average daily gain will be calculated and multiplied by two. The ranking on the performance class will be made by adding these two scores.

BOTTLE LAMB

BOTTLE LAMB CLASS, CLASS G031906 PREMIUMS: Purple, $6.00; Blue, $4.50; Red, $3.00; White, $1.50

NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR: Two Bottle Lambs.

Any 4-H'er may participate in this project. There are two age levels (age Dec. 31 of previous year): Beginner (ages 8-12) and Advanced (ages 13 & over). The lamb must be born anytime from February 1 through June 1 of the current year. The lamb must be under the care of the 4-Her through the entire project. The judging of the project will consist of three parts: 1/3 health, care and quality; 1/3 records; and 1/3 interview. The lamb must be tagged with an official 4-H and be recorded on the ownership affidavit due in the Extension Office by June 15. Record books are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 12 in the 4-H Office.

BREEDING SHEEP

BREEDING EWES PREMIUMS: Purple, $6.00; Blue, $4.50; Red, $3.00; White, $1.50

IDENTIFICATION - To be eligible to show, the club member must have cared for the sheep starting no later than June 15 of current year. Both commercial and registered ewes must have an official USDA (scrapie) ID tag, which will serve as the ID tag. The ownership affidavit is due in the Extension Office by June 15. In all cases, will be subdivided into breeding ewe lambs and breeding yearling ewes.

IDENTIFICATION FOR STATE FAIR – All breeding sheep must have a breeding nomination card submitted by June 15. The USDA Scrapies tag will serve as the ID tag. Registration for registered breeding ewes must be completed by fair date and a copy of the registration papers must accompany the State Fair entry.

AGE CLASSIFICATION OF BREEDING EWES: Ewes born September 1, 2015, or after are classified as lambs. Ewes born between 9/1/2014 and 8/31/2015 will be classed as yearlings. Ewes born prior to 9/1/2014 are ineligible to show. All breeding ewes may be mouthed for age. All ewe lambs must have all lamb or temporary teeth present; yearling ewes can have yearling teeth, but cannot have two-year old teeth up. Ewes exhibiting two-year old teeth will be allowed to show, but will not be eligible to compete for championship.

All registered and commercial “ breed” breeding sheep must be slick shorn, including belly, to ¼” within 10 days of the show. All registered and commercial “ breed” sheep may be shown in the fleece.

Breeding Sheep will be split by age and then by Black Face (meat) and by White Face (wool)
