Lowland permanent pastures were continuously stocked with yearling beef cattle and ewes and their twin lambs for two years in three farmlets. The cattle came into the farmlets as suckler-reared weaned calves at 195 32.6 days old weighing 309 45.0 kg, were ± ± housed indoors for 170 days then turned out to graze weighing 391 54.2 kg for 177 days. Therefore, ± it is suggested for predominantly grass-based systems with minimal supplementary feeding that target live weight gains should be 0.5 kg/day in the first winter, 0.9 kg/day for summer grazing and 0.8 kg/day for cattle housed and finished on silage in a second winter. The sheep performance suggested that lambs weaned at 100 days and weighing 35 kg should finish at 200 days weighing 44 to 45 kg live weight with a killing out percentage of 44%. -

Where do sheep live? Some sheep are kept in a barn year round. They are kept in small groups in pens. They have access to feed and water. Some sheep are kept outside year round in a field. Even though sheep have wool, they still need barns or a windbreak - like a group of trees - for shelter in the winter. A group of sheep is called a flock. A farmer’s flock can range from two sheep to over 1,500 ewes with their lambs. What do sheep eat? Sheep are ruminants, meaning they eat plants and digest it in a series of four compartments in their stomach. A sheep’s diet consists of mainly forages - grasses like alfalfa and clover, or hay (dried grasses). Sheep often graze on land that can’t grow other crops. At certain times during the year, farmers may also feed their sheep feed grains - corn, barley, oats, soybeans - as well as vitamins and minerals. What comes from sheep? Most of the sheep raised in Canada are for meat (called lamb). Dairy sheep are milked much like a dairy cow and their milk is then used to make dairy products like cheese and yogurt. Some sheep are raised to produce fibre. The wool from the sheep is sheared at least once a year. It is then cleaned and spun into yarn. • An adult female sheep is called a ewe. An adult male sheep is called a ram. A sheep that is less than 1 year of age is called a lamb. • Sheep need to have their wool shorn at least once a year. -

The 52 cooperating farmers were selected completely at random, with a stratified random sample statistical design, from among nearly 15 percent, or 350 farmers, practic- ing intensive grazing in a five-county region of northeastern Pennsylvania—Bradford, Tioga, Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Wayne Counties. The results from this study reflect typical use of intensive rotational stocking. The randomness of the sample selection ensures that the results reported here are representative, and can most likely be achieved by the typical farmer. Photo: Shawn Linehan In a world so filled with problems that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, here’s a bit of good news: Farmers and scientists around the world are confirming time and time again that a major climate solution lies in something as simple as soil: healthy soil can absorb excess carbon from the atmosphere and store it safely for long periods of time. The practices for increasing this capacity in the soil are low-tech, low-cost, and accessible, and bring with them numerous other environmental benefits. We call them regenerative farming practices. This is farming that can help to slow down or potentially even reverse global warming. So there it is. Farming doesn’t have to be destructive, it can be restorative. The way you meet your daily material needs doesn’t have to be destructive, it can be restorative. You don’t need to be a farmer to participate in this regenerative revolution. If you eat food, wear clothes, or use any products that can be traced back to farm- land somewhere, you are already a part of the equation that can make this work. You already have a say. And it’s quite simple: By supporting regenerative farms and companies that source from them, YOU can help to slow down or potentially even reverse global warming. -

Benin is located in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa and covers 114,763 km2. The population estimated in 2017 is 10,900,000 inhabitants with an annual population growth rate of 3.5%. The country is primarily an agro-based economy, characterized by subsistence agricultural production that employs more than 70%. The climate ranges from the bimodal rainfall equatorial type in the south to the tropical unimodal monsoon type in the north. -

Sheep Fact Sheet We are committed to finding safe, loving homes for our rescued animals and want to make sure that you are making an informed decision when choosing to adopt. Please read this Fact Sheet carefully before filling out the application, as well as do your own research. Characteristics: Sheep can live 12-14 years. Sheep are very social animals; ewes tend to stay in maternal groups for life. No sheep should be housed alone! Isolation of a single sheep can cause health problems due to the stress of being alone. Be very calm and gentle in your approach. Sheep are suspicious animals by nature, and will spook easily if they are yelled at, handled roughly, or even approached quickly. Sheep and gentle goats get along well, so mixed herds are often fine. Aggressive goats will pick on and potentially even injure sheep. If your dog is a hunting breed, be mindful that he may perceive your sheep as prey. Monitor this introduction closely, and never leave your instinct-driven hunting dog with free access to your sheep. Repeat their names and talk to them while feeding and grooming, and they will become your affectionate and playful companions. Before adopting sheep: - Check your local zoning regulations to make sure that you can have them. - Make sure that you have the time to care for them and that you have responsible caretakers to cover for you in the event of illness or when on vacation. - Make sure your veterinary practice includes sheep; if it doesn’t, find one that does before you adopt.
