Of course you have – that is the plot of the classic movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which our cover story pays passing homage to. In yer’ Chinese version, of course, uptight marketing executive Neal (Steve GET Martin), is now uptight marketing executive Ni’er, late for work because his boss forced him to work overtime on a pointless spreadsheet. Ni’s attempts to use an illegal taxi app to snag a cab on a chilly Beijing night are met with a wall of indifference from local drivers. YOUR Ni arrives at the airport too late to catch his flight, and promptly throws an epic tantrum, trashing a nearby bao’an’s hat with his computer in a GAME futile attempt at bullying – police intervention is prevented by the assis- tance of Del (John Candy), now Dai, a good-natured traveling salesman specializing in DD bra cups. ON Business for Dai is absymal – he can’t figure out why – but he agrees to share his motel room with Ni'er, unfortunately, he fails to disclose he drinks a pint of baijiu before bedtime every night and usually smokes in his sleep. The room goes up in flames and the pair hit the road in Dai’s Hyundai, only to run into the world’s longest traffic jam. Most motorists have been trapped in transit for months. Dai sells his remaining surplus of bra cups for grateful drivers to use as ear muffs and the pair use the cash to purchase two hard seats from a cheerful scalper. They board Get Active. Get Social. Get Organized a train only to discover even the bathrooms are knee-deep in sleep- www.mashupsports.com ing migrants, and the restaurant car ran out of instant noodles before even leaving the station. Enraged, Ni turns on Dai and accuses him of being dull, uncouth, poorly-educated and possessing terrible personal hygiene. Dai points out this is the norm, but it's too late – Ni bails and, despite a blizzard, hits the road on foot, only to be picked up, freezing and near-hysterical, three hours later by Dai. The savvy salesman has called in a favor from a local coal-mine owner who Dai once saved from an enraged mob, and the pair are off to Changsha! On arrival, Dai drops Ni with his family and heads off to commit suicide but Ni, remembering he dropped five kuai under the car seat, heads over to Dai's and is forced, by Confucian custom, to invite Dai back to his. Dai then drunkenly bangs Ni’s wife while Ni is passed out and the film ends on an awkward note, as the pair figure out suitable financial compensation and agree to do the whole thing again next year. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Ascending the Hall of Great Elegance: the Emergence of Drama Research in Modern China A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Hsiao-Chun Wu 2016 © Copyright by Hsiao-Chun Wu 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Ascending the Hall of Great Elegance: the Emergence of Drama Research in Modern China by Hsiao-Chun Wu Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2016, Professor Andrea Sue Goldman, Chair This dissertation captures a critical moment in China’s history when the interest in opera transformed from literati divertissement into an emerging field of scholarly inquiry. Centering around the activities and writings of Qi Rushan (1870-1962), who played a key role both in reshaping the modes of elite involvement in opera and in systematic knowledge production about opera, this dissertation explores this transformation from a transitional generation of theatrical connoisseurs and researchers in early twentieth-century China. It examines the many conditions and contexts in the making of opera—and especially Peking opera—as a discipline of modern humanistic research in China: the transnational emergence of Sinology, the vibrant urban entertainment market, the literary and material resources from the past, and the bodies and !ii identities of performers. This dissertation presents a critical chronology of the early history of drama study in modern China, beginning from the emerging terminology of genre to the theorization and the making of a formal academic discipline. Chapter One examines the genre-making of Peking Opera in three overlapping but not identical categories: temporal, geographical-political, and aesthetic.

PREVIEW ISSUE FOUR – 24TH APRIL 2012 MADRID CLOSE IN REAL TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE EL CLASICO AND CLOSE IN ON THE SILVERWARE After a poor week for both sides in Europe, Real and Barca were desperate to grab a win against their biggest rivals on a dramatic, rain-lashed Saturday night at the Nou Camp. It was Real that grabbed the vital win and probably clinched the La Liga title. Los Merengues went ahead through German midfielders Sami Khedira and were comfortable for long periods, but Barca’s Chilean substitute Alexis Sánchez equalised with just 20 minutes remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo’s clinical strike just three minutes later settled the game with Madrid now seven points clear, with only four games remaining. Madrid coach José Mourinho named an very attacking team and his side began the better. Ronaldo’s early header from a corner brought a superb flying save from goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. His opposite number Iker Casillas was then quickly off his line when full-back Dani Alves dispossessed Sergio Ramos. The game was being played at a fearsome pace and French striker Karim Benzema brought the best out of Valdés again. Barca thought they had gone front when Alves had the ball in the net after a Cristian Tello run, but the youngster had been flagged offside.
