Brothers and sisters: The love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh; even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no longer. So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.

They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. MUSIC NOTES

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch composer, organist, and pedagogue, straddling the end of the Renaissance and beginning of the Baroque eras. Before 1580, he succeeded his father as organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, a post he retained until his death when his own son Dirk followed him. Chief among his vocal compositions are numerous chansons and Italianate madrigals, motets (including the Cantiones sacrae collection of 1619 from which today’s music is drawn), and polyphonic settings for private devotions of the entire Genevan Psalter. As an organist, Sweelinck was renowned as much for his consulting as for his brilliant improvisations. His own organ compositions and teaching legacy – his students included Heinrich Schiedemann and Samuel Scheidt – helped establish the north German organ tradition of which Johann Sebastian Bach is the culmination.

Over the course of these summer Sundays, Johann Sebastian Bach’s organ concertos and other large independent works will be considered. These concertos are solo works transcribed from instrumental concertos originally composed by Italian Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) or Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar (1595-1715). They were penned in between 1713 and 1714, during Bach’s time serving the court at Weimar (1708-1717).
