The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826.

Calvary Or Catastrophe? French Catholicism's First World War Abstract CALVARY OR CATASTROPHE? FRENCH CATHOLICISM’S FIRST WORLD WAR Arabella L. Hobbs Professor Gerald Prince The battlefield crucifixes that lined the Western Front powerfully connected industrialized warfare with the Christian past. This elision of the bloody corporeality of the crucifixion with the bodily suffering wrought by industrial warfare forged a connection between religious belief and modern reality that lies at the heart of my dissertation. Through the poignancy of Christ’s suffering, French Catholics found an explanatory tool for the devastation of the Great War, affirming that the blood of ther F ench dead would soon blossom in rich harvest. This dissertation argues that the story of French Catholicism and the Great War uncovers a complex and often dissonant understanding of the conflict that has become obscured in the uniform narrative of disillusionment and vain sacrifice ot emerge in the last century. Considering the thought to emerge from the French renouveau catholique from 1910 up to 1920, I argue that far from symbolizing the modernist era of nihilism, the war in fact created meaning in a world that had lost touch with its God.

    Glasgow Merchant City Women’s Heritage Walk Glasgow Merchant City Women’s Heritage Walk A portrait hangs in Glasgow’s People’s Palace. Infamous as damning evidence of the city’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the Glassford Family portrait holds another secret. The face of the wealthy merchant’s wife has been painted over that of his former spouse. This piece of 18th century editing deems women to be replaceable, almost ghostly: there in spirit, but not important to the story. This map aims to redress that view and to shout about, share and celebrate the achievements of women in this regenerated and thriving quarter of Glasgow. Women have played a part in this area from its dear green beginnings, through its darker days, to its recent resurgence. Piper 2016 Abstract This dissertation explores spatio-temporal shifts in twenty-first century French crime narratives, through a series of close readings of contemporary crime films, television, literature, and comics. The works examined rely on the formal properties of the policier genre but adapt its standard conventions, most notably with deviations in the use and function of space. In this dissertation, I demonstrate that the modern policier is one that embraces its spatio-temporal, social, and generic non-fixity. The textual/visual constructions of many hyper-contemporary crime narratives contain multiple modes of decomposition within: a decentralization of space, which moves the action away from the genre’s traditionally urban location to boundless rural spaces and border zones; a de- concentration of the policier genre, through the incorporation of tropes from other literary styles and works; and a devolution of social cohesion and community identity in the narratives. Chapter 1 examines works where historic references and urban legends of the 19th century fantastique literary genre unfold in modern rural locations. The past and the present converge to problematize modern ideals, identity, and community unity in rural spaces where reason is pitted against the supernatural.

    ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: PROUST AND THE DISCOURSE ON HABIT Amy Ross Loeserman, Doctor of Philosophy , 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Pierre Verdaguer Department of French and Italian A la recherche du temps perdu b y Marcel Proust is replete with a discourse by the principal character, the narrator Marcel, on the subject of habit (“habitude” in French). This discourse meticulously explores the ubiquitous but concealed role that habit plays with respect to the most s ignificant aspects of life, such as emotions, cognitive processes, and aesthetic experiences, and it explicitly relates not only to the novel’s characters, but to humanity in general. The critical commentary on the novel has largely ignored this subject. This dissertation provides the only comprehensive collection and analysis of the Proustian commentary on habit in A la recherche du temps perdu. It is not by chance that habit was deeply explored in Proust’s novel or that it has been largely overlooked by the critical commentary. Historically, philosophers have paid substantial attention to habit. Habit was a focus of controversial philosophical/psychological theories in 19th century France regarding memory and consciousness, spirit and matter. Pro ust’s commentary was directly related to the prominent philosophical issues of his time. This dissertation discusses the broad meanings of habit, first as developed by Aristotle and St. Thomas; then by French essayists, through Montaigne, Pascal, and the philosophes ; and finally culminating in the great 19th century works on habit by Maine de Biran and Félix Ravaisson. It also reviews substantial contributions on habit made by other French writers and philosophers, notably Stendhal and Alfred Fouillée.
