  • Aspects of Black Hole Physics
Aspects of Black Hole Physics Andreas Vigand Pedersen The Niels Bohr Institute Academic Advisor: Niels Obers e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: This project examines some of the exact solutions to Einstein’s theory, the theory of linearized gravity, the Komar definition of mass and angular momentum in general relativity and some aspects of (four dimen- sional) black hole physics. The project assumes familiarity with the basics of general relativity and differential geometry, but is otherwise intended to be self contained. The project was written as a ”self-study project” under the supervision of Niels Obers in the summer of 2008. • Card Games for Individuals
Card Games for individuals Patience The game is played using a tableau of seven columns. Running from left to right, the first column contains one card, the second contains two, the third three, etc. In each column, the top card should be face up and the rest face down. Deal by placing one card, face up, on the table in front of you then, to this card’s right, six more face down. Repeat this row by row, dealing one less card each time. As well as the face-up cards in the tableau, you’ll work with every third card in the remaining pack, one at a time. Move through the pack by taking three cards from the top and turning them over, creating a new face-up pile. When you’ve passed through the deck, turn it over and start again. In the tableau, a card from the pack may be placed on another card that is one rank higher and of an alternate colour. An eight of hearts, for example, may be placed on either a nine of spades or a nine of clubs - both black suits. Sequences of grouped cards can be moved around according to the same rules as individual cards. Whenever you free up a face-down card on a tableau column, turn it over. If a column is emptied, you can shift any card or sequence into it. If an ace comes into play, position it face up above the tableau, thus beginning a foundation. Foundations are suited and built from ace to king.

It is the nation’s clock, instantly recognizable, and brought into Britain’s homes everyday by the BBC. It is part of the nation’s heritage and has long been established as the nation’s timepiece heralding almost every broadcast of national importance. On the morning of August 5th 1976 at 3:45 AM a catastrophe occurred to the movement of the great clock in Westminster Palace. The damage was so great that for a brief time it was considered to be beyond repair and a new way to move the hands on the four huge exterior dials was considered. How did this happen and more importantly why did this happen and how could such a disaster to one of the world’s great horological treasures be prevented from happening again? Let us first go through a brief history leading up to the creation of the clock.

  • Hard Patience by MELINDA CREECH
Copyright © 2016 Institute for Faith and Learning at Baylor University 67 Hard Patience BY MELINDA CREECH In one of his so-called “terrible sonnets” or “sonnets of desolation,” Gerard Manley Hopkins confronts how very hard it is to ask for patience and to see the world from God’s perspective. Yet patience draws us ever closer to God and to his “delicious kindness.” uring his Long Retreat of November-December 1881-1882, Gerard Manley Hopkins copied into his spiritual writings notebook this Deighth “Rule for the Discernment of Spirits” from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola: “Let him who is in desolation strive to remain in patience, which is the virtue contrary to the troubles which harass him; and let him think that he will shortly be consoled, making diligent effort against the desolation.”1 Patience was to become a focus for Hopkins during the last eight years of his life, strained slowly out of the experiences of life and distilled from his attentive study of creation, other people, and spiritual writings. As Ignatius counseled, it was to be patience in the midst of desola- tion, and Hopkins knew a fair bit of desolation in his short forty-four years. Growing up in a well-to-do religiously pious Anglican family, Hopkins excelled at Highgate School, London, and attended Balliol College, Oxford, receiving highest honors in both his final exams, Greats and Moderns. He converted to Catholicism during his last year at Balliol and later he entered the Jesuit order. During these early years he struggled with conflicts he per- ceived between his identities as priest, professor, and poet.

  • “Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of
“Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana DeVlieger, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Johanna Devaney and Anna Gawboy for their valuable insight and ideas for future directions and ways to improve.
