Instructional bulletin board ideas are provided for reading, oral language, and math. Ideas fordecorating window shades are illustratedfor each of the nine monthsof the school year. Examples of shades that reinforce specificskills are also presented. A section on calendars offers suggestionsfor using monthly calendars as decorations as well as learning tools. "TheBook Section" contains instructions and patterns for artactivities which motivate students in reading and creative writing. Activitiesinclude bookmaking, for example: zip-lockbag books, "shape" books, and bookmarks. The final sectionof special projectsprovides directions for screen printing, filmmaking, color-lifttransparency, picture frames, sun catchers, and feltboard patterns. Activitieswhich address skills from the Migrant Student Record Transfer SystemSkills list contain the skillname and number, the objective,and directions. Each page ofthe guide is illustrated. Let bulletin boards be a motivational tool for your classroom. Bulletin boards can motivate your students, strengthen their self-concepts, improve their study skills and create an exciting, decorative and stimulating environment for your students. The bulletin boards presented in this book are teaching bulletin boards as well as decorative and easy to duplicate. All of the patterns in this book can be enlarged with an opaque projector. When using the opaque pro- jector, make sure you use the dull side of the poster board for coloring your picture to achieve clean lines. 8 2 Bulletin Bowl Tips Siudents love bulletin boards that display shiny objects, vividcolors, touch and feel ob- jects and 3-D effects. Hereare some suggestions: Background Materials crepe paper corrugated cardboard construction paper newsprint/newspaper foil wrapping paper tissue paper wallpaper road maps burlap felt netting sandpaper contact paper cork sheets fabric paper tablecloths Borders Many of the background materials listed abovecan be used to create a border for your bulletin boards. The borders shown on this page were made by using thescraps from the Ellison Letter Machine. More Border Materials twisted crepe paper twisted or braided yarn ruffled crepe paper artificial vines or flowers tinsel paper doilies cut in half cotton ribbon-paper flowers 3-I) Effects To make the 3-D effect, glue piecesof sponge or styrofoam on the back of the objects on the bulletin board. Skill #24o ReedingShort Vowels Objective: The student will identify the short sounds of the vowels a,e, 1, 0, u. Directions: This nonsense sentence and the visual representation of it will help thestudent remember the short sounds of the vowels, a, e, I, o andu. Have the students memorize the sentence for a ready reference of the short vowel sounds. 4 Fishing For Books Skill #860 Reading-- Appropriate ReadingSpeed Objective: The student will read easier materialfor pleasure. Directions: This bulletin board doublesas a reading motivator. Have each child make two constructionpaper fish in any color and print his nameacross the front. Tack one fish from eachstudent on the bulletin board. Take the other fish that the student made andattach a long piece of coloredyarn to each fish. Each time the studentreads another book he may make another fish and staple it to the length ofyarn. He also writes the name of his book on his fish. At the end ofa designated time period, the child with the longest "school" of fish winswhatelsea book! A Suggestion: Make a cardboard figure and dress himin faded cloth scraps wit)paper curls for hair and use a dowel and string forthe fishing pole. 511 In Apple Order In Apple Order Skill #520 ReadingSequence Objective: The student will identify the sequence of related pictures. Directions: Place the bright red apples and yellow worms in scrambled order on a vibrantlycol- ored background. Have the student arrange the objects in sequential order fromleft to right.     Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1995 Volume I: Gender, Race, and Milieu in Detective Fiction That’s Not Fair Curriculum Unit 95.01.03 by Mary-Alice Howley These are exciting times, especially in the middle schools. From the superintendent on down, the City of New Haven is implementing middle school curriculum reform. To facilitate this reform teachers and librarians throughout New Haven are applying to The Library Power Grant Task Force for thousands of dollars in grant money. Meanwhile, though at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School, the fifth graders are entering the remedial reading program in greater numbers with the lowest reading levels seen in years. This YNHTI curriculum unit was developed in response to this situation, and part of this unit was used in a successful application for a Library Power Grant. This curriculum unit, “That’s Not Fair”, addresses several needs. It reforms the Betsy Ross curriculum through collaboration among the reading department, the drama department and the library. It has garnered five hundred dollars worth of new books for Betsy Ross’s Library. And it provides the fifth graders with whole series of detective fiction in a wide range of reading levels. Typically, the incoming fifth grade reading classes contain twenty to twenty-five students whose independent reading levels range from first to fourth grade. The reading levels of the books in this curriculum unit range from first to fifth grade so that the books can be read by the students with ease, and thus with pleasure. Since the students are an ethnic mix, these books have ethnically diverse and adolescent main characters so that the students can readily identify with them.
