Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

CYPERACEAE Sauergrasgewächse SEDGES, aka BIESIES, SEGGEN Formally described in 1789 by De Jussieu. The family name is derived from the genus name Cyperus, from the Greek kupeiros, meaning sedge. Many species are grass-like, being tufted, with long, thin, narrow leaves, jointed stems, & branched inflorescence of small flowers, & are horticulturally lumped with grasses as graminoids. Archer (2005) suggests the term graminoid be used for true grasses, & cyperoid be used for sedges. (If physical anthropologists have hominoids & hominids, why don’t we have graminoids & graminids?) There are approximately 104 genera, 4 subfamilies, 14 tribes, & about 5000 species worldwide, with 27 genera & 843 species in North America (Ball et al 2002). -

HOLMES Department of Biology Baylor University Waco, Texas 76706 [email protected] ABSTRACT Puccinellia parishii is reported as a genus and species new to Texas. The species is here reported from the Chinati Mountains of Presidio County in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, greatly extending eastward the previously recorded distribution of the species. The species was previously known from about 30 locales in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. At one time P. parishii was proposed for listing as an endangered species, but was removed from the candidate list because of abundance. The species is globally ranked G2G3 (imperiled and very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range) but is ranked S1 (critically imperiled) in Texas. Puccinellia, commonly known as alkali grass, is a genus found in saline or alkaline environments in the subtropics to Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. With the exception of the southeastern USA and Hawaii, the genus has been reported throughout the USA and Canada. Puccinellia parishii, commonly known as Parish’s alkali grass or bog alkali grass, occurs in continuously moist alkaline desert springs, or cienegas. -

Five range enclosures namely Abozaid, Elhedabab, Wadtbar, Salamat Wad Niel and Seyal Elfaki Saad were surveyed. Standard collection and identification methods were used for both plants and animals. During the study period, a total of 33 plant species, representing 27 genera from 14 families, in 11 orders were recorded. The flora is comprised of a variety of different life-forms; most are xerophytes (45.5%). The majority of the plant species have important uses as building material, medicinal values and as food and fodder. 22% of the collected plant species were fodders grazed or browsed by wild animals and domestic livestock. The wild faunal survey results indicated the presence of 16 species two of which are reptiles belonging to 2 families within the same order. The avifauna consisted of nine species falling into 7 families within 4 orders, while the observed mammals were 5 species within 5 families in 3 orders. Of Salinity on the Growth of Some Species

Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand SUMMARY Soil affects salinity many coastal communities, but it is not clear to what extent salinity is involved in the distributionof sand dune vegetation. Twenty-nine species (including nineexotic species) found on New Zealand sand duneswere used in astudy ofroot-salinity tolerance. Six concentrations ofsalt added to inwater were plants grown culture; growth rates and the percentageoflive materialwere measured. About halfthe species were more intolerantofroot-salinity than the glycophytic control(wheat). These were mainly native New Zealand herbs introduced and grasses and the species Silenegallica and Lupinus arboreus. Tolerantspecies includedthe native species Desmoschoenus and nodosa. tolerantexotic spiralis Scirpoides Most species were grasses; Elymus farctus was the most salt tolerantspecies tested, and possibly in Barbour’s‘facultative halophyte’ category. Species scores from the first vegetation gradient of an ordinationof field data from four dunesystems were plotted against results from this study. For some species, root-salinity tolerancecorrelated with their fieldposition.
