Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

CYPERACEAE Sauergrasgewächse SEDGES, aka BIESIES, SEGGEN Formally described in 1789 by De Jussieu. The family name is derived from the genus name Cyperus, from the Greek kupeiros, meaning sedge. Many species are grass-like, being tufted, with long, thin, narrow leaves, jointed stems, & branched inflorescence of small flowers, & are horticulturally lumped with grasses as graminoids. Archer (2005) suggests the term graminoid be used for true grasses, & cyperoid be used for sedges. (If physical anthropologists have hominoids & hominids, why don’t we have graminoids & graminids?) There are approximately 104 genera, 4 subfamilies, 14 tribes, & about 5000 species worldwide, with 27 genera & 843 species in North America (Ball et al 2002). -

This study is conducted to assess the nutritive value, mineral composition, bioactive metabolites, and antioxidant activity of five wild geophytes (Cyperus capitatus, C. conglomeratus, Elymus farctus, Lasiurus scindicus, and Panicum turgidum) collected from the Nile Delta coast and inland desert. The proximate composition including dry matter, moisture content, ash content, fiber, fat, protein, sucrose, and glucose were determined. Also, total carbohydrates, total digestible nutrients (TDN), and nutritive values were calculated. Macro- and micro-minerals were also determined in the studied geophytes. -

HOLMES Department of Biology Baylor University Waco, Texas 76706 [email protected] ABSTRACT Puccinellia parishii is reported as a genus and species new to Texas. The species is here reported from the Chinati Mountains of Presidio County in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas, greatly extending eastward the previously recorded distribution of the species. The species was previously known from about 30 locales in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. At one time P. parishii was proposed for listing as an endangered species, but was removed from the candidate list because of abundance. The species is globally ranked G2G3 (imperiled and very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range) but is ranked S1 (critically imperiled) in Texas. Puccinellia, commonly known as alkali grass, is a genus found in saline or alkaline environments in the subtropics to Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. With the exception of the southeastern USA and Hawaii, the genus has been reported throughout the USA and Canada. Puccinellia parishii, commonly known as Parish’s alkali grass or bog alkali grass, occurs in continuously moist alkaline desert springs, or cienegas. -

In all 66 species belonging to 29 genera and 15 families have been reported. Their correct nomenclature, phenology, distribution, abundance and morpho-ecological categories are provided. Porterl INTRODUCTION This is a list of vascular plants, the more conspicuous kinds of plants that typically have stems, leaves, and roots. They do not include mosses, lichens, algae, or fungi. Before the arrival of the white man, the Hawaiians had names for several hundred of the native plants. All common genera had names, and other descriptive major words (adjectives) were added to distinguish different species or varieties. The origins of many plant names are now obscure since the Hawaiians have lived here for many generations, but often the names simply describe the size, shape, color, odor, resemblance to plants and animals, location, ritual or practical use, growth form or pattern, etc. The exotic plants' names have followed much the same system and the names have been modified by the name "haole" meaning foreign or introduced. Some exotics have acquired colorful names,e.g., Opuntia megacantha, the cactus, is called "pa~nini" or "fence-wall" in English. Often there is a transliteration of an English loan word into Hawaiian, e.g., orchid = 'okika, oleander = 'oleana, corn = kulina. -

This is the fifth contribution for this flora, published in Phytoneuron and also posted open access on the website of the University of Arizona Herbarium (ARIZ). KEY WORDS: flora, southwestern Arizona, monocots Twelve monocot families occur in the flora area of the contiguous protected areas of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, and the Tinajas Altas Region in southwestern Arizona (Figure 1). This contribution includes all the local monocots except the Poaceae: Amaryllidaceae, Asparagaceae, Commelinaceae, Cyperaceae, Hydrocharitaceae, Iridaceae, Juncaceae, Liliaceae, Potamogetonaceae, Ruppiaceae, and Typhaceae. These eleven families include 35 taxa (34 species and one hybrid) in 22 genera. -
