Carbon-free transport An exciting vision of a completely carbon-free future for light rail was delivered by Brad Read, President and Co-founder of TIG/m LLC. The Oranjestad tramway serves cruise passengers and locals on its just over 1km (0.6-mile) route – which functions without overhead wires using hydrogen fuel cell technology. In fact, Read explained, eliminating the need for electrification can bring a 40%-50% reduction in costs, as well as reducing any undesirable effects on the surrounding environment by making wires, masts and substations unnecessary. THE FLEET

Tram numbers identify different features, with the first digit indicating depot; thus all are now either No. 3 (Fridriķa iela) or 5 (Brīvības iela). The second digit is the tram type, the third and fourth being the vehicle number, with the fifth being a check. The last depot west of the river, No. 4 (Tipogrāfijas iela) closed in 2010, although it was still storing stock in May 2014. Modernised and extended, all the depot buildings retain some common styling, dating from the 1900-01 creation of the electric tramway. With over 240 received from the mid-1970s with fleet modification from 1992, paired TatraT3A (second digit 0 or 1) remain the most numerous type. Each vehicle has space for 167, 32 seated. The T3 is the donor for the water tanker/track clearing vehicles frequently seen around the system. The later T3M/T6B5 (type 2 or 5) from 1988-90 are from the same Czech manufacturer, with 62 originally delivered. Also running as pairs and with similar capacity, they were modified from 2005. They have an external destination display; T3A has this on a card in the front window. All types have an audio announcement of the present and next stop, also of doors closing. The two Tatra types each have different blue and white liveries. Spacious, kept smart inside and out and with good external viewing, the main drawback of the Tatras for passengers is entering or leaving from kerb or road level. Seating The central market (Centrāltirgus) is one of several traffic generators on loops near the main reserved for the mobility impaired becomes an interesting railway station. notion given the achievement of having got on board at the more challenging locations. Upholstered seats, air conditioning and service information including internet mapping contribute to Riga’s modular Škoda ForCity being a radical upgrade. Unlike the earlier types which retain trolley poles, the Škodas are pantograph-fitted. Bogies which help make the newcomers compatible with an essentially traditional tramway are beneath the ends with a Jacobs bogie between sections. Creating slight internal sloping (the floor height varies by 100mm) and narrow gangways over the articulations, there is however unbroken floor space. The driver cab is higher than the passenger area and has an external door. Little of the infrastructure currently permits level entry, although these trams are fitted with a wheelchair lift. The 2.5m- wide ForCity is seen in two lengths, 20 three-section, 31.4m 15T (classified as 7) capacity 318, 60 seated, and six four-section 15T1 (8) about ten metres longer for 432 passengers. All the trams mainly feature 2+1 seating. The greater exposure afforded by trams working lines 6 and 11 and the association with modernity have made the 15T trams popular for advertising liveries, now comparatively rare on Tatras.. In a district best known as home to Latvia’s biggest brewery, Aldaris stop incorporates a loop for the infrequent service.

To the north however, tram tracks are attractively located between the curving tree-lined canal and the edge of the Old Town up to the National Theatre. Rīgas satiksme identifies a total track length of 99.53km (62 miles). The system is mainly double track, with termini being either free- standing loops, some with separate arrival and departure platforms, or routing around streets. With twin wires for use by trolley-poles as fitted to the greater part of the fleet, line 10 has sections of bi-directional single track. The forest-fringed outer residential suburb of Imanta has the system’s most recent expansion, in autumn 1984. Particularly at its eastern end, presents the system’s most modern face. Edinburgh trams: A case for integration, not invisibility

It was my great pleasure to be aboard the first Edinburgh tram at 05.00 on 31 May. There are a great many positive aspects of Edinburgh's tramway, and I am sure that many others will report in great detail. Certainly, during the rest of the morning I encountered many Edinburgh citizens who were very appreciative, and they were present in huge numbers. The Edinburgh Trams team deserve hearty congratulations for their efforts. It might seem churlish to report any negatives at this early stage, but I encountered two examples: Firstly, as an airport connector, the awkward additional walking distance from the terminal building (in the open, and it does rain sometimes!) is a major disadvantage compared with boarding the much-touted airport express bus to Waverley station.
