The large banquet hall is 46 metres long, 18 metres wide and 15 metres from floor to ceiling. The hall is adorned with five large paintings which depict the city’s history from 800 to 1900. There are also town arms from the 62 members of the Hanseatic League, of which Hamburg was one. The front of the building itself is 111 metres wide, and the heaven-aspiring tower is 112 metres high. • The German North Sea Ports' Absorption Into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914
From Unification to Integration: The German North Sea Ports' absorption into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914 Henning Kuhlmann Submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy in History Cardiff University 2016 Summary This thesis concentrates on the economic integration of three principal German North Sea ports – Emden, Bremen and Hamburg – into the Bismarckian nation- state. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Emden, Hamburg and Bremen handled a major share of the German Empire’s total overseas trade. However, at the time of the foundation of the Kaiserreich, the cities’ roles within the Empire and the new German nation-state were not yet fully defined. Initially, Hamburg and Bremen insisted upon their traditional role as independent city-states and remained outside the Empire’s customs union. Emden, meanwhile, had welcomed outright annexation by Prussia in 1866. After centuries of economic stagnation, the city had great difficulties competing with Hamburg and Bremen and was hoping for Prussian support. This thesis examines how it was possible to integrate these port cities on an economic and on an underlying level of civic mentalities and local identities. Existing studies have often overlooked the importance that Bismarck attributed to the cultural or indeed the ideological re-alignment of Hamburg and Bremen. Therefore, this study will look at the way the people of Hamburg and Bremen traditionally defined their (liberal) identity and the way this changed during the 1870s and 1880s. It will also investigate the role of the acquisition of colonies during the process of Hamburg and Bremen’s accession. In Hamburg in particular, the agreement to join the customs union had a significant impact on the merchants’ stance on colonialism.

  • Marking a New Chapter in the History of Our City. Newspaper Narratives of Proposed Waterfront Star Architecture
Vol.3 Vol.4no.2| no.12021 | 2021 Image Credits ©Carola Hein, CC-BY-NC ©Carola Image Credits MAIN SECTION Marking a New Chapter in the History of our City. Newspaper Narratives of Proposed Waterfront Star Architecture Nadia Alaily-Mattar — Delft University of Technology, Netherlands — Contact: [email protected] Mina Akhavan — Politecnico di Milano, Italy — Contact: [email protected] Carola Hein — Delft University of Technology, Netherlands — Contact: [email protected] ABSTRACT A recurrent claim associated with the development of star architecture buildings along new urban waterfronts in port cities is that star architecture’s capacity to garner media exposure for a port city can support its efforts to communicate narratives of urban transformation. Even during the inception phase, a constellation of actors legitimizes these projects by cap- italizing on their power to attract media attention. The media play a role in the communica- tion and construction of narratives. This paper shows how newspaper narratives about a proposed star architecture project along the waterfront of a port city communicate transfor- mation proposals. The case study presented is the inception phase of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The findings are based on content analysis of 420 newspaper articles, published before the formal endorsement of the project. The findings indicate that news- papers communicated the sense-making value of the Elbphilharmonie based on the visual and emotional power of star architecture. Newspapers introduced notions of identity, citizen identification and Hanseatic particularity into the discourse and played an important role in explaining the promise of the Elbphilharmonie to become a symbol of the city’s commitment to the port, the maritime context and the Elbe river.

Make the Most of a Layover in Munich ©JetSetting Fools | JetSettingFools.com Munich Sights and a Short History The city center of Munich is compact, making it easy to see many sights in a short amount of time. Munich was founded in 1158 and in 1175 the small city, with Marienplatz at the center, was fortified with protective walls. By 1330, the city outgrew the fortifications. The walls were expanded and eight city gates were built, three of which still stand today. The city was further strengthened in the early 1600s, but by the 18th century, the walls were seen as useless and destroyed. The main sights of Munich remain in a centralized area that was once confined by those city walls. Historic churches, squares and lanes, beautiful buildings and beer gardens are all within the city center. Throughout history, both fire and war destroyed many of Munich’s buildings so that today there is a mix of style and more than a few replicas. A Layover in Munich: 4-6 Hour Self-Guided Walking Tour Karlsplatz (Karl’s Square) Karlsplatz, a square that emerged with the city walls were torn down and named for the man who ordered the destruction, is on the western edge of the city center. On the east end of the square is Karlstor Gate, which was used as an entrance into the fortified city until the 18th century. Walk through the arched Karlstor Gate onto the pedestrian promenade, Neuhauserstrasse, to… Burgersaalkirche (Citizen’s Hall Church) The pink façade of Burgersaalkirche is hard to miss and resembles a government building more than a church.
