    From Unification to Integration: The German North Sea Ports' absorption into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914 Henning Kuhlmann Submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy in History Cardiff University 2016 Summary This thesis concentrates on the economic integration of three principal German North Sea ports – Emden, Bremen and Hamburg – into the Bismarckian nation- state. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Emden, Hamburg and Bremen handled a major share of the German Empire’s total overseas trade. However, at the time of the foundation of the Kaiserreich, the cities’ roles within the Empire and the new German nation-state were not yet fully defined. Initially, Hamburg and Bremen insisted upon their traditional role as independent city-states and remained outside the Empire’s customs union. Emden, meanwhile, had welcomed outright annexation by Prussia in 1866. After centuries of economic stagnation, the city had great difficulties competing with Hamburg and Bremen and was hoping for Prussian support. This thesis examines how it was possible to integrate these port cities on an economic and on an underlying level of civic mentalities and local identities. Existing studies have often overlooked the importance that Bismarck attributed to the cultural or indeed the ideological re-alignment of Hamburg and Bremen. Therefore, this study will look at the way the people of Hamburg and Bremen traditionally defined their (liberal) identity and the way this changed during the 1870s and 1880s. It will also investigate the role of the acquisition of colonies during the process of Hamburg and Bremen’s accession. In Hamburg in particular, the agreement to join the customs union had a significant impact on the merchants’ stance on colonialism.

    Number 4, Volume XIX, December 2019 AUTOMATION IN THE CONTAINER TERMINALS OF THE PORT OF HAMBURG Andrej Dávid1, Jiří Tengler2 Summary: The port of Hamburg is the largest German seaport lying on the banks of the Elbe River, 115 kilometres from its estuary into the North Sea. Within container transhipment, it is on the third rank among European ports beyond the Dutch port of Rotterdam, and the Belgium port of Antwerp. Hamburg belonged to the first European ports that started handling containers at the end of the 1960s. In 1990, the port handled 1.696 mil. TEUs, in 2017, it was already 8.815 mil. TEUs. The port of Hamburg has four container terminals, two of which are automated or semi- automated terminals. The terminals differ in technical equipment, transhipment technology, handling systems. Key words: port of Hamburg, container terminals, handling systems, automated terminals INTRODUCTION The port of Hamburg is one of the oldest European ports which began transhipping containers in the late 1960s. The first container ship, the American Lancer, entered the port of Hamburg on 31 May 1968. This ship had already had a cellular structure of cargo hold. Between 1968 and 2017, a total of 186 million of standardized containers were handled in the port. Nowadays, Hamburg is the third largest European seaport in the transhipment of containers after the port of Rotterdam and the port of Antwerp. In 2017, 8.815 million TEUs were handled in the port that represents a decrease of 1.03% compared to 2016. Among the twenty world container ports, Hamburg was nineteenth in the transhipment of containers.

    Chapter 3 Adam of Bremen on Slavic Religion 1 Introduction: Adam of Bremen and His Work “A. minimus sanctae Bremensis ecclesiae canonicus”1 – in this humble manner, Adam of Bremen introduced himself on the pages of Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum, yet his name did not sink into oblivion. We know it thanks to a chronicler, Helmold of Bosau,2 who had a very high opinion of the Master of Bremen’s work, and after nearly a century decided to follow it as a model. Scholarship has awarded Adam of Bremen not only with a significant place among 11th-c. writers, but also in the whole period of the Latin Middle Ages.3 The historiographic genre of his work, a history of a bishopric, was devel- oped on a larger scale only after the end of the famous conflict on investiture between the papacy and the empire. The very appearance of this trend in histo- riography was a result of an increase in institutional subjectivity of the particu- lar Church.4 In the case of the environment of the cathedral in Bremen, one can even say that this phenomenon could be observed at least half a century 1 Adam, [Praefatio]. As in many places, the wartime damage was seized upon as the opportunity to replan, sometimes radically, at all scales from the City core to the county and region. The hierarchy of plans thus produced, especially those by Abercrombie, is often celebrated as ‘models’, cited as being highly influential in shaping post-war planning thought and practice, and innovative. But much critical attention has also focused on the proposed physical product, especially the seductively-illustrated but flawed beaux-arts street layouts of the Royal Academy plans. Reconstruction-era replanning has been the focus of much attention over the past two decades, and it is appropriate now to re-consider the London experience in the light of our more detailed knowledge of processes and plans elsewhere in the UK. This paper therefore evaluates the London plan hierarchy in terms of process, using new biographical work on some of the authors together with archival research; product, examining exactly what was proposed, and the extent to which the different plans and different levels in the spatial planning hierarchy were integrated; and impact, particularly in terms of how concepts developed (or perhaps more accurately promoted) in the London plans influenced subsequent plans and planning in the UK.

If it is not properly addressed, fire in a tunnel can result in loss of life to both tunnel users and the fire and rescue services. The result- ing economic losses for both the tunnel owner/operator and to the local economy and environ- ment can be catastrophic. This document is the result of a co-operative effort between the World Road Association (PIARC) Technical Committee on Road tunnel Operation (C 3.3) and its Working Group 6 Fire and Smoke Control, and the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 6 Re- pair and Maintenance of Underground Structures. The purpose of this co-operative effort is to develop guidelines for resistance to fire for road tunnel structures.
