SOMERVILLE J.F.C. EAGLES The Season That Was 2014

President Report 2014 Season

The season has drawn to a close and in reflection our club is still a great environment on and off the field and our supporter’s follow each team with such passion and our kids play with pride in their jumpers and each other. This club makes me proud to be apart off with so many great people who have created a culture of family and respect. With every age group represented it has made for a fantastic season.

Within our club you get to meet some very special people and this club have so many but none more special than Scott and Terri Nation who over the years has helped shape our club. Their enthusiasm and passion to see the kids succeed with their football is a real credit. It has been a privilege to have worked alongside you both.

Sunday night’s back at the rooms have continued to be a great high light of the season with a great family fun atmosphere that is the envy of other clubs.

Again the Blue Ribbon day was a huge success for the club and more importantly the Blue Ribbon foundation. The whole day was truly a wonderful and proud day for our club. This day has become the club’s marquee day for all teams. To Daryl and Rhon Nation and the Blue ribbon Foundation thank you for your ongoing support.

Pink Day was a very special day on the calendar this was started by Ken Mills and Mark Williams. This day was about how everyone can get behind a great family and community to raise a little bit of money for the breast intentions foundation but more importantly raised awareness. Our Pink Night Fundraiser was also a huge success with everyone getting on board, dressing in pink and raising a lot of money.

Thanks also to Rhonda Vincent for organising the Cocktail Night with Slushie Machine, Photo Booth and DJ, those who came along, dress up accordingly and had a great night.

To our coaches Adam Hammond, Richard Marshall, Terry Wilson , Luke Avis, Peter Mantell, John D’Arcy, Pete Urwin, Chris Vincent ,Max Pretty and Scott Nation the commitment and time you all put into our kids to make them better footballers and better people is truly amazing, thank you. To the Team Managers for supporting the coaches not only at training but on game day, it is a thankless job that everyone appreciates. Great job thank you.

Our runner’s some of whom may run a marathon during the season to deliver that all important message from the coach, ripper job. Our Trainers who give the caring shoulder when needed on game day well done.

To Luke Dalmau well done on your selection for the Victorian Country team the club was so proud.

Congratulations and well done to Mitchell Delmo for winning the U15’s League Best & Fairest, what an outstanding achievement !!! Somerville JFC is very proud of you.

To Trace Dalmau who has stocked and ran the canteen also Tracey Tincknell and Nicole Tennant over at Fruit grower’s canteen. The canteen is a massive undertaking and you three are so special to the club, thank you.

To our quiet volunteers that just get on with the job at hand from setting up the grounds on Sunday mornings, chasing up sponsorship to marking out the grounds, cooking the BBQ or just chipping in to help out in the canteen thank you. To our Bar staff John, Troy and Sam and a few others helpers, thank you.

To the committee thank you for doing whatever it takes to make this a great club you all should be proud of everything that you have achieved.

Our club is in a great position with three U10s, two 11s, 12s, 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s all having large numbers. It is an awesome site when we are all playing at home. Well done to the teams that made the finals. Unfortunately this season the club didn’t manage to get in to a Grand Final, but having 4 teams make it into finals just shows how strong our club is and how good our coaches are.

To the kids which is what we are about hope, you all had fun.

Finally thanks to my wonderful family Zoe, Luke, Matt and my beautiful wife Sue for your support Love you all.

Enjoy the summer and have a Safe and happy New Year.

Registration Day will be the first Sunday in February.

Geoff

TEAM REPORTS

Under 10’s Gold

How time flies when you’re having fun. It seems like only yesterday that Round 1 was upon us and I was trying to remember 18 young smiley kids names.

It all started back in April on a bright sunny day at Mace Oval playing Mt Martha Red. From then on, what a ride! The improvement in skill level and teamwork was well beyond what I could ever have imagined. So hold your heads up high.

As the year started we picked up a few more players, which brought our numbers up to, 21 and I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch. You we all willing to listen and that showed on game day. You need to remember that 17 of you have never played this game before. With the help of the four kids that had played last year, you all turned into an awesome side, which showed in the last 6 rounds of the season.

Couldn’t have dreamt of a better way to finish our year off, by being undefeated in our pool on Lightning Premiership Day, only going down to a tough Rosebud in the Semi Finals. What an afternoon, so proud of you all! A special shout out to the 7 boys from U/10 Blue who joined with us on the day and shared in that winning feeling.

A big thanks goes out to all of the parents! It was great to have you all so willing to help out, not just at training (with a few laughs along the way), but on match day, doing anything you could to make the day run smoothly. We couldn’t have asked for a better or louder group of parents.

Also a massive thank you to the people who made my life easy on a Sunday.

Dave – for keeping the kids hydrated by running water and filling in as Umpire on a few occasions. Hope your “hami’s” have recovered! Thanks mate.

Glen – as our trainer you were always ready for action, but luckily we came through unscathed. Thanks mate.

Darren – as our runner you spent more time on the ground than anyone else, not sure if you were just super keen or trying to relive your youth! Thanks mate.

Sarah – a huge thanks for everything, big and small, seen and unseen. But for especially keeping the team and I organised. Thank you.

Being my first year as a coach, U/10 Gold will always be remembered. I’ve had the time of my life with you guys. So I would like to thank S.J.F.C for giving me this opportunity to be in charge of such a fantastic group. Thanks. Hope to come back and do it all again next year.

Cheers, Adam Mason “Major” Armitt – #12 - A born leader. Never seen a person so young have the will to get the footy and lead from the front. Proven by his Runner-Up in the Best & Fairest and Blue Ribbon Medal. Jye Denman – #24 - Brave in defence all year and showed what a big future he has. Will only get better over the years to come, a worthy winner of the Coach’s Award. Lachlan “Frase” Fraser - #7 – The quiet achiever who doesn’t need his name in lights. Whether down back or up forward always did what was asked of him. Charlie Hammond - #18 – Played down back all year and never complained once. A very important part of our defence with his accurate kicking out from full back. Well deserved 5th in our Best & Fairest and Most Improved Award. Corey “Corza” Harding - #9 – That smile is contagious. Always did the team thing. Started the year down back but did most of his damage dominating in the ruck. Well deserved 3rd in our Best & Fairest and the Most Consistent Award. Reece Lee - #19 – This kid did play everywhere and played well. Brave at the ball and when down back was another important cog to this team. Chase Mantel - #31 – Started the season late but boy did he make up for it later in the year. Can’t wait to see more next year and all to follow. Hayley “Hayles” Monk - #13 – Stand up and take a bow young lady! Keep Your Cool Medal, Blue Ribbon Medal, just about every game day award given by other clubs, and to finish with our Best & Fairest, certainly capped an excellent year off. Zak “Tac” Nailon - #4 – Had a slow start to the year until he found his feet. Showed good signs that will only help in years to come. Isaiah “Izzy” Pavlovich - #5 – This year did wonders for him. Once he felt comfortable he slipped straight in. Massive improvement as the year went on. Jacob “JP” Pavlovich - #6 – Not only looks like his brother but also responded to things the same way. He too improved as the year went on and found his place in within the team. Kyle “Peachy” Peach - #36 – He too started the year late and with no footy background took awhile to understand. But when he did the smile on his face said it all. Kyle “Super K” Roper - #16 – Again came from no footy background but took to it like a duck to water. Improving every week no matter what position he played. Tyler Slamin - #20 - Another who we picked up during the year. A quiet kid who just wanted to play footy. With games now under his belt it will only be up from here. Lachlan “Snowman” Snowden - #8 – Showed how brave he is from Day 1, even though he missed a few early games. Never stopped running and throwing himself at the footy. Well deserved 4th in our Best & Fairest, the Most Courageous Award and a Blue Ribbon Medal. Tyson Stewart - #33 – Never stopped trying. Always did what he was told and gave everything in whichever position he played. Always gave 100%. Kane “Toad” Sutherland - #10 – Big heart for a small kid. Never gave up and another one who was so important to our backline. Never complained and always listened. Angus “Gus” Tierney - #2 – This kid could fit in your pocket. Another who had a contagious smile. But best of all he knew how to celebrate a goal after crumbing the packs. Only going to benefit from his first year of footy. Harrison “Harry” Trakilovic - #14 – Never took a backward step going for the footy. Didn’t matter where he played you knew he was going to get in to get the ball. Kai Wakenshaw - #23 – Marked everything that came his way. You always knew what you were going to get from Kai. Shame things ended the way they did for you champ. Keep your chin up! Jonah Wanders - #11 – Never answered back and always did what was asked of him. Another that didn’t matter where he played, he just wanted to get the footy. Great to see your confidence grow with every game. Keep your little legs pumping! Under 10 Blue

Our 2014 season started after last year’s lighting premiership carnival. With 6 players we had a great time during the summer at Westernport Athletics which helped the boys through this season. My main focus was to develop this new side of now 22 players for 2015. Now with 14 of our team to play in 2015 season it’s going to be pretty awesome.

Our preseason was great the Blue Boys all got along and it wasn’t hard to gel them into a team. We kept our team spirit high all season and they fought hard to win their own football and shared the highlights together. They listened to instructions and played by the under 10 rules which are great for developing very player and growing their confidence to attack the football.

Our discipline to play as a team and find the best option with these guys lifting their eyes and using their voice to instructions was the highlights of this season 2014.

Thank you to our older players that will be in the real game next season I hope you have taken a lot from this year and always remember to play as one and be first to the ball!

What a fantastic and enjoyable year we had as a team. Our boys in their second year with Lincolnn and Cole in their first year sure have come a long way with all aspects of their game...Skills, Courage, and Teamwork. You boys have improved in all area's, last year we couldn't kick a goal. Well what a difference a year makes, there were plenty this year with nearly everyone kicking one.

With our first game down at Dromana, we had a slow start and went away with a loss, but after that it did not take long for our boys to get rolling as they started to find their feet in competitive football. To their credit the whole team worked hard at training and it was showing off in a game, as by the middle of the year we were stringing a lot of wins together.

At the start of the year when we had our first win we were handing out pieces of paper with the club song on it, because no one knew the words………Well by the middle of the year there was no need for that paper as our boys bellowed out "The Song" game after game, what a buzz!

YEARS HIGHLIGHTS AND MOMENTS

*First win of the year in round two *Some umpires letting the game go so we could tackle *Brad and Shirley's mid-year B.B.Q. *Round 10 vs Rosebud- with torrential rain *Playing in the mud at Pearcedale *Pink Day *The teams last minute goal to win the game against Crib Point *Any time we sang "The Song"

I would like to thank anyone who helped out at training or with goal umpiring, time keeping, voting, helping out between quarters, in the canteen, when it was our turn to cook, and anyone that chipped in during the year to help out. THANK YOU for your support and help it was very much appreciated.

Under 11 Navy

We knew from the start that we up against it this year. Based on the side we had I thought it would be beneficial for our team to train twice a week. So we started our pre season at St Brendan’s Primary School. Not the best grounds but we made the most of it, so much easier to do drills when you don’t have to share a ground with someone. Attendances were mixed from the start, come to think about they were mixed for the majority of the year. Hence why people spent more time on the bench than others...... You turn up to train & throw in turning up with the right attitude then you get game time, pretty easy. I was very nervous when we went into our first game. We started off amazingly, I couldn’t have been more happier. Unfortunately this didn’t last long and we got touched up by Sth Mornington. Our first clash at home was against Dromana, a side I thought we stood a chance with. But a poor performance cost us a victory. We had 3 more scoring shots than them but were not accurate enough and wasted our opportunities. Round 3 was a massive wasted opportunity. The loss to Crib Point hurt a lot, it was very clear that we were a better side but like the week before were our own worst enemy. It was becoming clear that we were struggling to put together a 4 qtr performance. Round 4 was a better effort, we got touched up but we gave it a crack. Round 5 saw us get our first victory for the year, it wasn’t pretty but it was a win and was great to see the players sing the song loud and proud. I was hoping that we had finally gotten some confidence with ourselves as the next 2 rounds were going to be tough. This was not to be the case as we managed to only kick 1 goal and have 24 kicked on us. Round 8 v Pete’s team, I asked for them to grow some pride, it took 3 qtrs to do but they did and we came out in the last and dominated. Maybe a little too late, nether the less great to see. Round 9 to be honest was our best game for the year. The team work displayed by our kids was sensational. After a crushing month it was what we needed to turn our year around. The next round was the worst possible conditions that you could ask for, raining and the ground partially underwater from the massive storm the night before, that and the fact we had no bench. Result a loss to a team that we should have easily beaten. Due to the draw and school holidays we had the next month off, it couldn’t have come at a better time. First game back from the break was a thriller against Rosebud. For the first time in the year saw us go down in the last qtr. Usually we were the team finishing strong. Would have been nice to get another win up but still a massive team effort ( I could ask for). The remainder of the year was what it was really, a big loss to the favourites Red Hill even though we made them work hard for 2 qtrs and another crushing defeat to a team that wanted it more than us in Pearcedale. We unfortunately finished the year off with another big loss at home to our arch enemies Mt Martha. Lets hold our head high as we always gave our all and never dropped our heads all year. With an improvement in fitness as well as effective use of the football we can do a lot better. We showed in the scratch match on Bluey’s day what we are capable of. The majority of us were there for the right reason all year but unfortunately some of us were not. AFL is a team sport that requires everyone to do their job. All I ever ask is that you turn up, mind on the job and give your all for the team and our great club. That way we all enjoy our football more and have fun along the way. Dave Bent – This guy has more passion towards this team then the rest of us put together. Not many of you would understand how much we catch up reviewing the previous week’s game, coming up with training drills that are going to improve the side and picking sides for the coming week. Thank you mate for all your help throughout the year Renee – Well done on your first year as a team manager. You have done a fantastic job organising everyone every week, I know it wasn’t easy for you at times. Thank you for all your support. Kirra – The kids have been so lucky to have you as their trainer. You have taken your role very seriously and have had their best interests at heart. You have gone beyond your duty all year and looking at this from a parent’s point of view we are all so lucky to have you. Now as a coach and your husband thank you for your support of myself and Elmo with all the ups and downs this year, I love you to the moon and back. Gerald, Mark, Mick, Glen, Steve, Lynne & Dean as well as everybody else that filled in for weekly tasks thank you. We are unable to take to the field every week without people like yourselves. For all the parents that helped out during the year at the canteen thank you, it’s not the best missing seeing your child play we appreciate your efforts. Congratulations goes to our milestone players this year: 50 games – Logan Marshall, James Egan, Josh Shanahan, Jack Naughton also to Harry Rhodes even though it wasn’t all at our club. Looking forward to seeing you all next year. Believe me when I say we will be stepping it up another level. Both in fitness and skill set. Enjoy your break over the off season, don’t be afraid to get outside and have a kick and see you all next year with the right attitude.

Luke

#1. James “Eagle” Egan What can I say except great year Eagle. Was our go to man at CHF, missed 1 game & kicked 18 goals. Puts in a massive effort considering his knee’s, a pleasure to coach and very much a team player. Congratulations on achieving Runner up for Best & Fairest. #2. Logan “Busta” Bustard Solid year from Busta. Very much a defending style player. Played most of the year across the half back line and on the wing. Best game of the year was our round 9 win against Tyabb #3. Stephen Artus This guy turned his game around so much from last year. Big team player who put his body on the line. Was killing it until he became unwell around the last half of the season. Can’t wait to see him in 2015. A deserved winner of Most Improved award #4. Joshua “Hoodie” Hood Who would believe it was Hoodies first year. Played on ball for the simply fact the way he attacked the ball. A workaholic on the field and at training. Lad knew where the goals were bagging himself 13 goals for the year. He will cause the opposition many headaches in 2015. Was a clear winner of my Coaches Award #5. Jake “P-Man” Pillar Another good year from P-Man. Always positions himself well on the field and is a vital part to our team off the half back flank. Will be the complete player when he gains confidence in his defence and tackling. Finished the year off strong. #6. Kaleb “Elmo” Avis Took his game to a new level this year. Very consistent, hard working player that is a good user of the ball. Played mainly through the centre because of his tank. Wears his heart on his sleeve constantly giving his all. Polled well all year taking out Most Consistent award. Well done buddy I’m so proud. #7. Charlie “Melon” Malseed A player that was permitted up for the year, Melon is a natural defender. He loves putting his opposition player off his game. Great kid to coach who has no fear. Not only does he tackle well he has a great clearing kick. #8. Alex “Coolio” Mueller First year at the club, Coolio has all the skills and was a great addition to our side. The sort of player you can move around the field depending on your opposition. Works hard through the centre, strong defender that can counter attack & a smart small forward that can kick a goal. Congratulations on your year. #9. Jared “Jazza” Bent Very much a team player Jazza had a mixed year. Always stood up against quality opposition. Plays his best football off the half forward flank and on the wing. Kicked a tidy 4 goals for the year. He trained hard all year I am certainly looking forward to seeing him get his confidence back in his game and having a massive 2015. #10. Flynn “Flippa” Carbone A first year player from NSW. Flippa is to go in & do the hard stuff shutting down the opposition. I feel he will pick up the game a lot quicker as long as he turns up to training & game day with his mind on the job. #12. Harrison “Hazza” Rhodes Mr 100% at everything he does. A true sportstar. Hazza stood out from the start of the year. Polled well in nearly every round, Hazza gave his all for the team every game he played. A natural on baller he has fitted in well with our team for his first year at the club. Never looked in doubt taking out Best & Fairest Congratulations mate you can hold your head high. #13. Jake “Nails” Nailon Jake played the year mainly in the forward line and the ruck. Like last year he played the ruck well. Has a great kick which he can put to good use when he learns to time his run leading out of the forward line. Has the ability just needs to back himself and get more involved in the game. #15. Luke “Princess” Eade Luke was one of our revelations of the year. He was moved to fullback mid way through the year and did a fantastic job back there. His ability to read the game saw him stop many a goal getting scored against us. His no fear attitude in putting his body on the line in defence made him a clear stand out for the Most Courageous award. #16. Balin “Bails McDonnell Played the majority of the year in the forward line. His ability to sneak goals is nuts, bagging himself 3 goals for the season. Bails needs to work a bit more on his skill level which will come when he attends training more and practices at home. #20. Logan “Marshie” Marshall Another great year for Marshie. Done well juggling his swimming with his footy. Started the year mainly playing down off the half back line cause of his defensive abilities. Towards the end of the year he was moved into an attacking role and done a great job. #23. Ronan “Rover” Vaipo Another solid year from big Rover. He played all over the paddock from the back line to the ruck to forward line. Kicked four goals for the year & really got better as the year went on with his last two games being his best by far. #30. Jack “Knotty” Knott Ah Knotty, loves jogging laps at training……. not. Has every excuse known to man as to why he cant do certain drills at training. Shame as the lad has one of the best kicking styles I have seen. A little less negative and a lot more positive could see you achieve anything you want. Can play both down back but prefers it up forward. #31. Tate “Spudo” Sonogan Spudo never takes anything serious. Mainly played in defence but sometimes snuck up to the forward line. Played to the best of his ability all year. #32. Joshua “Joshie” Shanahan Started off the year very well bringing to the team knowledge of his previous year in the 11’s. He started down back, suffered a few injuries through the middle part of the year then a move saw him play off the half forward flank. A smart footballer who has fantastic skills, well done Joshie #33. Grace “Gracie” Dale Gracie showed us again this year as to why we love having her part of our team. She stepped it up with some great tackles in defence as well as held her own when playing in the forward line. Best game for the year being round 6 against Sth Mornington where she was the only player in our team to kick a goal…. Keep going Gracie #39. Jack “Jacko” Naughton Jacko played mainly as our full fwd. He listened well at training & took what he learnt into game day. Used his body well & started taking some good marks, kicked his first goal in rnd 9 against Tyabb. Struggled a little during the year with soreness in his feet, keep working on your fitness mate & you will develop into a powerhouse full-forward. #46. Ben “Benno” Neilson This kid has dedication. Never missed one training session. Very versatile player that can be moved all over the ground depending on the game or your opposition. Best position being through the ruck or CHB. Done the job asked of him week in and week out, another great year Benny

Under 11’s Gold

Well what a year! For some reason this season has really flown by. It seems like only a little while ago we were packing up the cricket gear and dusting off the footy boots but all of sudden, it’s the reverse.

We’ve had an interesting year to say the least. We’ve had a few weeks off throughout the year due to holidays, byes and long weekends so it also seems like the season never really got going even though it’s now all done and dusted. Whilst it’s been that sort of year it has also been a terrific year with an outstanding bunch of kids.

The season started off in the most amazing fashion with a huge win against Dromana in really warm weather and showed just how good the kids could play. As the season progressed we had some good results and some less than spectacular results and whilst we had wins that were bigger on the scoreboard we probably didn’t play quite as well as we did way back in round one. Toward the back end of the season we still weren’t playing our best footy but we had done enough to earn a spot in the finals finishing on nine wins and five losses.

We finished sixth on the ladder out of fifteen teams so whilst we had managed to “scrape” in to the finals, finishing sixth was a pretty good effort itself given that that there were some pretty good teams in our competition. What we saw come finals time gave everyone a reminder that we were not simply there to make up the numbers and we were very much deserving of our place at the business end of the year. We entered the finals a bit light on for numbers with a few of the kids still sporting injuries so the challenge to progress beyond week one was significant even before a ball had been bounced. Thankfully someone forgot to mention all of that to the kids that did play and we stormed out on “the chip” at Red Hill and hit Beleura with everything we had. So much so that we came away with a well deserved and hard fought two point win. The win was clearly the highlight of the year for us especially when we think back to the seven goal thumping that we’d been given earlier in the season by the same team. The kids held no fear of the opposition and simply attacked the ball as hard as they could. They made every effort to be the first to the ball making life extremely difficult for the opposition. I cannot remember walking away from a game with as much pride as I did on that Sunday morning.

The second week of the finals had all the excitement of the first with the result unfortunately favouring the opposition. Now it would have been such a great reward for the kids to have won our last game against Sorrento but as they say, “that’s footy”. We got jumped early and the result looked close to being decided by quarter time but to the credit of the kids, they fought back and fought back hard and turned the game into a toss of the coin affair. At three quarter time the scores were level and it was anyone’s game and whilst we dominated the last quarter we just couldn’t quite get the job done. I certainly won’t lie, I was absolutely shattered to have lost the game, but at least I can look back and know that the kids gave it absolutely everything they had and had we have won we would have most certainly deserved the victory. Sometimes that darn oval ball just doesn’t bounce your way.

Those two finals games will stay with me for a long time in such a positive way because it was proof that this bunch of kids is good enough to achieve anything.

I am so very lucky to have had the opportunity to have coached this bunch of kids. They have all shown an enormous amount of respect towards me and I truly look forward to watching them progress beyond this season. Thank you kids for always being yourselves; I am a better person for simply having spent time with each and every one of you.

I must also thank the fantastic people that have given up their time and energy in support of me and the team. Thanks heaps to Daniel for your thoroughness and constant support, we certainly wouldn’t have achieved as much as we have without your efforts along the way. Thanks also to Steve, Glen, Mark and Robyn for your efforts each and every week and big thanks to Ella for doing such a terrific jump on the boundary line all year. Thanks also must go to all the parents and guardians and extended families that came and supported us over the last few years. You’ve been a fantastic group of people and you’re support has been greatly appreciated.

Pete.

2. Joshua “J Mac” McCulloch What a cracking first year from J Mac. Josh came to us from another club and made a massive impression from his very first outing against Dromana. Always hard at it, J Mac was a really good contributor to the team and proved that size is no barrier when it comes to playing footy. 3. Jye “JT” Taylor JT enjoyed a year of real improvement this year where is skills in particular progressed magnificently. Early in the year in particular, JT played some really good footy by winning his own footy on many occasions and as has always been the case, Jye is a sensational kid that is a pleasure to coach. 4. Aaron “Azza” Hosking Azza had another good year building on last season where he was also terrific. Although hampered by injury at times, which kept from being at his absolute best, Aaron was still a great contributor to the team and as always was hard at it when it was needed most. 5. Xavier “Falcon” Donazzan Falcon (or X Man as I think he prefers) showed yet again what a wonderful addition he is to our football team. Such fantastic skills for someone so young and really thinks about his football. As hard as his coach has been on him at times I think he is even harder on himself which shows just how much Xavier wants to contribute to his team and improve his own game. Another amazing year mate, could not be happier with your efforts. Congratulations on your much deserved award. 6. Joshua “Squashy” Young Squashy was simply sensational this year and most pleasing was just how consistent Josh was, always playing at a high level. Squashy is a magnificent team player and often sacrificed himself for the betterment of the team. Well done on a magnificent year mate and congratulations on your award, it is greatly deserved and I’m really proud to have been your coach. 7. Daniel “Bluey” Young I have loved coaching Bluey over the last three years. A nicer person, a harder worker on the training track you won’t meet and he has never blinked an eyelid when asked to play a role for his team. Well done on another really good year Bluey. I also reckon the biggest cheer all season was your first goal earlier in the season, great stuff mate. 8. Brodie “Brodsta” Love Brodsta built on the improvement he made last season and took his game a new level this season. I’ve had an absolute ball coaching Brodie and watching his footy improve. He has become a really valuable player in this team and there is no one harder at the ball that Brodsta. Well done on a great year mate and an even better finals series. 9. Dylan “Wolfman” Howell Wolfman’s footy took another step forward this year and he was once again a very important part of the success we enjoyed. Wolfy is a fierce competitor that loves the hard footy and also loves to sneak forward and kick a goal. Keep working hard mate, straighten that kick up and you’ll enjoy some really good footy in the coming years. Well done on another solid season. 10. Zoe “Smitty” Smith Smitty was such a great addition to the team this year and it was such a pleasure to watch her go about her footy, especially when it came to taking on the boys. Zoe never took a backward step when the ball was in dispute and she continually showed others just how the ball should be won. Thanks for being such a great person Smitty, you’ve been great to coach. 11. Sarah “Sairs” Hosking Whilst Sairs battled injury at times throughout the year she was still a great contributor to the team and like Zoe, she never took a backward step when it came to shaping up against the boys. It’s been amazing to have such a nice person in the team that is always willing to play wherever the coach needs her the most. 12. Bailey “Bazza” Yule Bazza has had an absolutely sensational season and proved yet again just how important he is to the team especially during the finals. Bazza was consistent all year and probably got better as the year went on. Congratulations on your award mate, it is thoroughly deserved and I loved watching you got about your footy for the past few years, continually getting better as each year goes by.

13. Jackson “Jacko” Wise Jacko has had an amazing year and has improved out of sight highlighted by his much deserved most improved award. Jacko’s consistency has been a real credit to him and a huge benefit to the team. Most pleasing is the fact Jacko has developed into someone that is able to play in any position. Well done on a cracking year mate. 16. Lachlan “Merksy” Merks Merksy was our “Mr Reliable” this year and was always happy to play where he was needed and do what was needed for the betterment of the team. Lachy is a terrific footballer that makes really good decisions and enjoyed a terrific year as a result of his hard work. Well done on an awesome year mate, it was a real pleasure to have in you in the team. 17. Mitchell “Spida” Webb Spida has had a terrific year and his footy really improved making him a very valuable member of the team. His skills are exceptionally good having the ability to take a big mark and kick a goal either on the run or from a set shot. Pleasingly, Spida played his best footy during the pressure of the finals. Keep believing in yourself Mitch, you are definitely good enough to compete against the best. 19. Aiden “Aidos” Hinson Well what can you say about kid that has just won his third Best and Fairest in a row that hasn’t already been said? Aiden just keeps on improving year on year and his work rate is second to none. Always there to give us a lift when we need it and just attacks the footy harder than anyone. Always does what the coach asks and is always prepared to do what it takes for the betterment of his team. It has been an absolute joy to watch you play footy for the last three years. Well done on yet another stellar year. 21. Jordy “Frosty” Sleat The Snowman has been awesome to coach for the past few years and has become a really versatile player that can play at either end of the ground as well as in the middle. When Frosty is at his best he rarely loses a one on one battle and posses really good skills, which will take him a long way in the future. Top stuff big fella! 28. Marcus “Razor” Mantell It’s often hard for a coach to say or write something about his own son but the truth is Marcus has been amazing to coach. Marcus has always done what his coach asks and understands that it’s always for the betterment of the team. Well done on a sensational year mate, particularly in the finals. I’m beyond proud of you and your efforts over the past few years. 30. Ostyn “Ossie” Saker Ossie had a magnificent year and really took his footy to a new level, especially considering we had to obtain a permit so he could play up a level. Ossie has plenty of good skills and is at his best when there is a hard all to be won. Keep working hard mate and good things will come your way. Thanks for being so great to coach Ossie. 35. Jordan “Jordy” Pregnell Jordy was another new player to the team and what an addition. Jordy was magnificent this year and was the real surprise packet of the season. Jordy gave us plenty wherever he played on the field and always put his hand up to play in the tough positions. It’s been a real joy to coach Jordy this year, well done mate on a super year. 45. Jayden “Downsey” Downes I have truly loved coaching Downsey this year. Although I think we barely heard a handful of words from Jayden all year, Downsey saved his efforts for the training track and game day and always did what the coach asked of him. Well done Jayden on a great year and thanks for being so magnificent to coach. 46. Rhys “Roosta” Dupas It’s fair to say that Roosta is a favourite amongst his team mates and has been sensational to coach. Roosta is always hard at it and ALWAYS gives 100%. Rhys has also worked hard to set a great standard and has been a really good leader and influence on the team. Well done mate and thanks for being such a pleasure to coach.

We started training back in February with the idea of joining last year’s 2 teams into 1. This gave us 28 kids which is a very hard number to manage. Some didn’t like the idea and after round 3 we were down to 25 players. This made it more manageable and we decided to rotate the kids off the bench every quarter. We had players running everywhere and to the kids credit they picked this up really well and it was a much better system.

Bringing 2 teams into 1 was always going to be a challenge, but to the boys credit, they combined well early and we won the first 3 games. The next 4 games we played 4 of the main teams and apart from 5 – 10 minutes of undisciplined footy we matched them all losing by only small margins. At the halfway mark of the season we were 4 wins and 4 loses. Round 10 we played Rosebud at Rosebud in shocking conditions. They were the premiership favourites and they gave us a lesson in the first half showing that no matter what the day is like, you have to prepare properly and stick to your game plan. To our boys credit they never gave up and outscored them in the last half. After this we won 5 out of the next six games and we finished 5th on the ladder which meant we got to play Balnarring in the elimination final. Once again apart from a 10 minute lapse in concentration we were in it all game, but in the end, Balnarring won by 13 points.

The year was a great success considering half the team didn’t even win 1 game last year and this year they got to experience what finals footy is all about. Well done boys for a good season on the park, your persistence and determination to improve each week was a credit to you. It has been a really enjoyable year coaching each of you and I look forward to seeing you all develop as footballers and people over the coming years.

As always the Season would not be possible without our committed parents. Huge thanks to, Brian Stannage and Mark Tennant for helping out at training and sharing the running duties and to Ed Fleming for putting his hand up and being our trainer. To all the parents who helped the team, doing all the other jobs, to get the kids on the ground each week thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Special thanks to our Team Manager, Brian Nuttall for his tireless planning and organising, making sure all ran smoothly on and off the ground. Thanks mate for all your help!

I would also like to thank all those on the committee for their efforts behind the scenes and ensuring that all the kids get a game of footy each week.

Thanks, John

Brock Cliffe #43 - Played in the ruck and at centre half back and is also our other co captain. Dominated every position he played in and was one of our best players for the year.

Under 13’s Navy

This season there was a change of voice for the players, with Pete Young handing over the coaches role to myself. I was fortunate enough to inherit a great group of 26 kids with good all around footy skills and a positive attitude towards their footy. Rd.1 – Loss (Mt Martha 23-8-146 def Somerville 4-6-30) Our first outing for the 2014 season certainly didn't go as planned; we faced a strong opposition in Mt Martha. Mt Martha caught me out and I set some wrong team placements, I underestimated their attacking ability and over estimated our defence. Rd.2 – Win (Somerville 8-16-64 def Crib Point 9-8-62) A tough contest against some big Crib Point players, Somie put their bodies on the line, no more so then Lucas who unfortunately broke a bone in his foot/ankle, which ended his season only 2 rounds in. It was a nail bitting game, but Somie toughed it out to take the win. Rd.3 – Loss (Beleura 18-14-122 def Somerville 6-8-44) Beleura started strong and used their bodies well at every contest, they constantly kept Somie under the pump and several players’ attitude and endeavour dropped. We dropped too many marks and were pushed off the ball way to easily. Rd.4 – Win (Somerville 10-20-80 def Balnarring 8-8-56) Balnarring were first to the ball more than we would like. All the usual suspects were putting in effort and under pressure Somie took some strong marks and kicked several goals, which lifted the team’s effort. In the 4th quarter we came from behind to take the win. Rd.5 – Loss (Rosebud White 10-18-78 def Somerville 5-9-39) Rosebud White were a tough opponent, making Somie players work hard to win first ball, but again we let ourselves down by dropping too many marks, we found ourselves chasing the footy, not staying in position, and leaving it up to just a few players. Rd.6 – Win (Somerville 15-13-103 def Tyabb 5-6-36) The players were ready to take it Tyabb. Somie started well with a dominate midfield and strong forward pack . Tyabb were running with extra players back, but this didn’t stop Somie consistently hitting the scoreboard. A good team effort saw Somie take the win. Rd.7 – Loss (South Mornington 11-8-74 def Somerville 5-7-37) Last year’s premiers South Mornington were always going to be a tough. South Mornington fired hard out of the blocks and by the1st quarter we were down 34 points to 0. Somie then put together 3 great quarters of outstanding football keeping South Mornington scoreless in the 2nd quarter, and then matched them on the scoreboard in the 3rd & 4th. We fell short but I was proud of Somie’s effort. Rd.8 – Win (Somerville 24-18-162 def Dromana 1-4-10) Dromana have been struggling for numbers, so Somie assisted by giving players each quarter (well done to those players). Somie executed their game plan with ease, the midfield dominating and delivering consistently into our forward line; we controlled our ball use and didn't get over selfish with 11 different goal kickers for the day, and finished with a 152 point margin. Rd.9 - Bye Rd.10 – Win (Somerville 15-15-105 def Rye 2-3-15) Winter footy hit us this round, the day was very cold, wet, windy, and at times hailing. Rye put pressure on Somie both at the contest and on our ball carriers. However we muscled up and won 80% of all contested ball, keeping to our game plan of limiting our kicks as required and increasing our handball use due to the weather. We had 7 different goal kickers, and the team orientated play was a pleasure to watch. Rd.11 – Win (Somerville 30-19-199 def Hastings 0-1-1) Hastings may not have been our strongest opposition, but Somie still had to work hard once the ball hit the ground with so many Hasting defenders in our forward 50. Somie showed good team discipline and resisted the temptation to play greedy footy, ensuring they passed off the ball until a suitable goal kicking position was found. The team

orientated footy was a pleasure to watch, and contributed to having 13 goal kickers for the day. Special effort by Haydos this week to kick "10 Goals". Rd.12 – Win (Somerville 25-21-171 def Rosebud 0-0-0) Rosebud was down on numbers with only 13 players, so Somie gave Rosebud 5 players each quarter. Somie dominated the centre clearances with accurate taping, clean hands between the receiver, sweep & guard. Several players kicking their first for the season and a spread of 13 different goal kickers for the game, which was a buy product of good team orientated play. Rd.13 – Win (Somerville 23-22-160 def Red Hill 3-2-20) Round 13 was Pink Day raising money for those battling with breast cancer. Somie demonstrated good team footy dominating from the middle and delivered consistent ball forward. With clean ball delivery the forward line kicked the game out of reach of Red Hill. Over the last 5 weeks Somie has scored 797points with only 46 against which is quite impressive. Rd.14 – Loss (Pearcedale/Baxter 13-10-88 def Somerville 10-9-69) Somie played Pearcedale/Baxter for Rd.14, the first of two chances at making the finals. First bounce and Pearcedale where frantic and aggressive at the ball which caught Somie out and it took 10 minutes for us to start playing. As the 2nd & 3rd quarters continued we managed to keep in touch on the scoreboard, only one goal behind. Somie put in a hard 4th quarter slog, but Pearcedale took the win. Rd.15 – Loss (Mt Martha Black 6-8-44 def Somerville 4-11-35) Rd.15 would be our final game of footy for the home and away season. It was do or die time for Somie, who had to win this game to make finals, but injuries and illness had us seven players short. First hit out and both teams were frantic and aggressive at the ball, the whole game was an arm wrestle and by the end of the 3rd quarter we were down by 2 goals. 4th quarter and Somie put together some good footy, however we left our run too late and at the siren we lost by 9 points.

A solid season was had by the team with a respectable 8 wins - 6 losses (Points For-1298, Points Against-752) , we just missed out on finals this year which was disappointing, however there was plenty of positives to take into next season with all players showing improvement.

Without the help and dedication of parents this season none of this would be possible. A HUGH thanks to all the parents especially: TM - Rohan (kept me organised, best in the business) Runner - Frank (Quickest legs in the group, understood my rants) Trainers -Kath & Fee (We all appreciated you looking after our kids) Water - Chris (great effort each week, appreciate your support) Boundary - Doug (inspiration to us all, keep getting it up!!) Goal Umpire - Steve (score of 10/10 for style and technique) Time Keeper - Mark H (no fuss dedication) Interchange Steward - Mark V (great penmanship) Coaches Board (Coaches assistant) - Warren & Adrian (big help each week, I think?). Thanks Mums (for the oranges and lollies)

A great player to coach and a reliable team player.

Under 14’s

Well, what a year. The preparation for this year started not long after last season finished and it was decided that unless there were exceptional circumstances, we would only be one side. We started training prior to Christmas and numbers were good. With Rego day out of the way, we had 32 registrations and after meeting with the committee it was finalized that one side would be fielded for the year. Prior to year kicking off we had 4 kids leave, so down to 28.

The year kicked off with a big win against the struggling Dromana and it was good to see the kids happy, as wins like that had been few and far between. For once we were on top of the ladder, even if it only lasted a couple of weeks, we were still there. We followed up with a hard fought win against Crib Point. A dose of reality came at the hands of Beleura. We then had a good win against Sorrento. Sth Mornington then showed us what it was going to take to compete with the tops sides. We got away with a win against Rye, but then we had heavy losses at the hands of Rosebud (our worst defeat for the year) and Balnarring. By this time we had slipped to halfway down the ladder, with Pearcedale and Rye directly competing for 6th spot on the ladder.

Our next game at home against Pearcedale was our crunch game if the boys wanted to make finals. We played pretty ordinary footy up until ¾ time and were down by 23 points and looking as though the year might slip away. But the kids played their best quarter of footy of the home and away season to keep Pearcedale scoreless and kick 4.2-26 for the quarter to win by 3 points. The year finished off with wins against Red Hill, Dromana, Crib Point and Sorrento and losses to Mt Martha, Beleura and Sth Mornington. WE MADE THE FINALS!!

Highlights: Our first ever final against Balnarring. The game was, I think, our best game for the year. The attack on the footy was sensational and we held them to a couple of goals to half time and we were ahead. They came in the second half (which was always going to happen) and unfortunately we weren’t able to stay with them and they won the game well. We were far from disgraced and all of you should be proud of your efforts.

Congratulations: to Lemon and Pundy on playing their 50th game this year and to Mono, Pres, Flash and Baz for playing their 100th game. Also to Nicko and Ted for making the interleague team.

I would like to thank all the kids this year. It has been a hard year with the numbers, but you all did what was asked without complaint. You achieved your goal of playing a final. I hope that next year you can better that by winning one and you are capable of doing it, so good luck to you all and thanks!

I would like to thank all the parents who helped out during the year, especially those who did so week in week out. Special thanks to Tony for being the Team Manager. John for helping with the board each week. Troy for assistant coaching and training. Tim for runner, helping with the coaching and training.

Cheers, Chris Vincent “Vinnie”

Under 15’s

After lifting our game in 2013 for their first finals campaign the boys were as keen as ever to get back out on the track for the preseason. We were back into it early February and after a bit of shuffling around ended up spending a lot of our time on Sommie Rise primary. A few pick ups and some past players pulling on the boots again saw us with a very strong side and a very deep bench, some weeks with up to ten on the bench! After some controversy when we played them in the finals last year we were rostered to play Mount Martha round one and we knew it was a must win game to get our season moving. To their credit the boys went out and played with class and aggression and ended up thumping the Mounties 124- 34. This year we played our first night match against Balnarring, a great initiative from the league and the club presidents. But to their credit Balnarring used the ball beautifully on their home turf and came away with . Bad luck to Smurf who during the game fractured his collarbone and missed the rest of the season. A highlight of the year would definitely have to have been our game against Rye at Jones road. Undefeated for 4 years they have been dominant in our age group but undeterred we ran out with full confidence we could roll them. In the end it came down to the wire and we took the four points! An absolutely mammoth effort and the boys should really be proud of their courage and persistence. In the end we faced Crib Point in the first final and they were too skilful at Redhill and advanced through to the semi’s. Although the boys played an excellent year and it has been an absolute pleasure to watch them grow and improve their games over the past two years I’ve spent with them. But as this is goodbye I wish them all the best for next year and their football careers; you’re all great guys and if you stick together and work hard you’ve shown you can be a force to be reckoned with!

Thank you’s Quinn Martin- team manager is probably one of the most under appreciated positions at the football club and this year Quinn worked as hard as ever helping me, and the boys out. On behalf of the team I’d like to thank him for all his hard work because this season would not have gone ahead without you. Mick Harding- Unfortunately I think this year the most running and hard work done on the ground was done by Mick. He did a great job and managed to channel my garbage into positive words for the boys even if he did run half marathons every Sunday. Tozer- As much as it pains me to praise Geoff he really helped me out a lot this season, helped me to grow as a coach and eventually to cut most of the swearing out of the pregame speeches.

Dawsy- Great first season as captain Dawsy you really stepped up your training and showed a lot of maturity this year Tommo- Had a rough year with niggling injuries but lead the boys really well mate, get the body right and kill ‘em in 2015. Dutchy- The quiet achiever, you played an awesome season and need to keep up the good work, the cm’s will come! Jacko- Unlucky with your ankle mate, played a good season though. STAY OFF THE MOTORBIKE! Lownsey- a really good clubman, always trained hard and you were great around the packs! Tozer- I tried my hardest to get you a goal mate but I know your definitely better suited to CHB well played and keep up the hard work Scotty- A great overheard mark and a player who oozes class keep it up Scotty! Moose- you’re a great player so keep at it and work hard while your still developing! Taco- Played some really great games this year Taco just need to GET YOUR VOICE UP! Thunder- spent most of the year in the ruck working hard and did a fantastic job, keep it up! Gibo- it has been great to see you pushing yourself to become a better player, you’ve got a great foundation and can go a long way! Blaine- you were really key in some of our big wins towards the end of the season well done Blainey and start throwing your body around a bit more! Loobs- you’re a really talented player and if you can keep up the hard work then there’s no stopping you! Bazza- well worked this season, make sure you take care of yourself mate and you can be a great player. Comey- good season down forward Cam, keep up the training and start using your body mate! Barney- hard worker and a great trainer; loved having you around the club Barndog great year pal. Mitch- a naturally talented player who works really hard, make sure you always back yourself in! Rusty- the big claw, was good to see you take some great marks and kick a bag down at Rosebud! Blake- great commitment to the team and way to stick it out when times got tough, well done. DJ- a great guy to have around, will give his all for the team and always works to his best! Millsy- Chucked you around the ground a lot this year mate but you took it on well and played awesome! Smurf- Unlucky with your collarbone, come back next season and work hard mate! Jacob- great second year of footy pal, keep up the hard work and the results will come! Vans- always going 100 miles an hour mate, you were a pleasure to coach this year. Zylstra- a great footy brain and really classy player, great season mate. Kupsche- always a hard trainer and put your head over the footy, keep working hard mate. Fielding- a really classy midfielder who works as hard as anyone, great season Locky. Riles- good in and under player with a lot of fire in your game, keep at it and work hard!

UNDER 16’s

Well another year done and dusted , it’s been a tough year all round starting all the way back in round 1 along time ago now. As tough as it’s been , it’s still been a great ride and I believe there’s been plenty of positives to take out of the year going forward. Everyone’s had plenty of game time with no bench all year and often only 15 boys fit or available, to say it’s been character building is an understatement to which everyone will benefit from in years to come.

At times where’ve had to play out of position for the detriment of the team with a lack of numbers , not ideal but great for your footy and improvement. Most pleasing was the way you conducted yourself throughout the year with a positive attitude as a team and individuals both on and off the field, when the chips where down we all kept our chins up and had a crack all year. Unfortunately we left our worst for the last game with everyone being pretty flat and lackluster after a long season , not ideal but it’s only a game of footy at the end of the day.

As with previous years, you boys voted our captain’s this year, congratulations to Murph - Captain & Barnsey & Kyle -Vice-Captains, all leading by example. Congratulations to Brodie , Kyle and Murph for representing the club in this year’s interleague, all 3 played their part in a successful winning interleague team. Well done to Luke for representing Vic Country in the u/16’s championship this year great effort, unfortunately for us we only had him for a game & a half this year.

I’ve had the pleasure of coaching you boys for the last 3 year years which I must say, I’ve had a great time to watch you all grow as footballers and young men and can’t wait to have a few frothies watching you play senior footy in years to come. Hopefully I had some positive influence on your football careers and life as you’re all ripping young men, each one of you have done yourselves and family proud with the way you conduct yourself and attitude to life. They say all good things come to an end and my time’s up, with a bit of persuasion hopefully Mark Barnes will take over the reigns as he will do a rippa job with you guys.

I do want to say well done to Murph on playing senior football this year, great effort. I understand it wasn’t an easy decision you made at the end of the day it’s about your football improvement & a credit the way you stuck by the boys turned up each week and backed them like their captain. Congratulations on the boys who played milestone games this year for the club great effort Macca, Alex and Goose playing their 100th.

A lot of people to thank for all your help as we all know it’s about the boys but without help the show doesn’t go on. All the committee a big thanks, what a great place to be SOMERVILLE.J.F.C those in the know, know how much hard work you but in. Thanks Mick as team manager did a sensational job, made my gig a lot easier all year & thanks Brian for the cameo TM job while Mick was flying around the top of Aus Glenn and Colin for the running duties this year, Anthony & Karen for training duties a lot more involved this year. The one and the only Dazza behind the goals all year, Mark & Lance running the white line this year, Lisa for the oranges and lollies every game, Paul on the interchange bench most games and Cath for taking photo’s all year. Gareth for being jack of all trades and all the other parents who help in canteen, time keeping and other support not forgetting Mikaela Monk for the home game score board. All the Parents, Grand Parents, Brothers, Sisters and everyone who came and supported us and all the other teams throughout the year. Congratulations to all the deserving trophy winners unfortunately everyone can’t win one as much as I’d like 10 coaches awards they wouldn’t let me. Good luck to Brodie, Kyle, Luke and Murph with the stingrays program going forward you all know the more you put in the more you get out of it. Boys I really want to see you all come back next year as a team and keep improving, I’ll be cheering you all on from the sidelines. Wishing you all the best on your future endeavours what that maybe.

Cheers Big Fella
