Simple Summary: Paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) has been a favored subject of behavioral research during the last decades of the 20th century. Lately, however, with a massively expanding genetic toolkit and a well annotated, fully sequenced genome, zebrafish (Danio rerio) became a central model of recent behavioral research. But, as the zebrafish behavioral repertoire is less complex than that of the paradise fish, the focus on zebrafish is a compromise. With the advent of novel methodologies, we think it is time to bring back paradise fish and develop it into a modern model of Citation: Rácz, A.; Adorján, G.; behavioral and evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) studies. The first step is to define the Fodor, E.; Sellyei, B.; Tolba, M.; housing and husbandry conditions that can make a paradise fish a relevant and trustworthy model.

This species was previously recorded from the same area over 15 years ago, but was considered extirpated. The rediscovery of a reproducing population of this species highlights the dearth of information available regarding the dozens of non-native fishes in Florida, as well as the need for additional research and monitoring. Key words: canal; croaking gourami; cypress swamp; Florida; Loxahatchee; Osphronemidae; Trichopsis vittata was previously considered extirpated (Shafland Introduction et al. 2008a, b), but is now known to be reproducing in a localised area. Dozens of non-native fishes have been introduced into Florida’s inland waterways, via accidental escape, pet releases, or intentional introduction

  • Behavior and Phylogeny of Fishes of the Genus Colisa and the Family Belontiidae
BEHAVIOR AND PHYLOGENY OF FISHES OF THE GENUS COLISA AND THE FAMILY BELONTIIDAE by RUDOLPH J. MILLER') and AMBROSE JEARLD2) (Department of Zoology, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma, U.S.A.) (With2 Figures) (Acc.25-VI-1982) Introduction In an earlier paper on the behavior and phylogeny of trichogasterine fishes (MILLER & RoBISON, 1974) we presented arguments supporting the use of behavioral characteristics in assessing phylogenetic relation- ships among animals. Though we agreed with ATZ (1970) that care must be taken in establishing "homologies of behavior", we concluded that behaviortaxonomy studies often prove useful at the family or genus group level (MAYR, 1958; CULLEN, 1959; ALEXANDER, 1962; WICKLER, 1967; HINDE, 1970). We were able to show that the four species in the genus Trichogaster fall rather easily into two groups, based on numerous trench- ant behavioral characteristics. We also have been studying the behavior of the four species currently recognized in the genus Colisa (RESER, 1969; JANZOw, 1971; JEARLD, 1975). The purpose of this paper is to describe the reproductive behaviors of the Colisa spp., examine this information for insights on phylogenetic relationships of the group, and integrate this data with the earlier material on Trichogaster. Since LIEM (1963) placed both genera at the peak of adaptive radiation in the family Belontiidae, such a comparison may be of some value in assessing strengths and weaknesses of the comparative behavior technique. The Anabantoidei are a group of over 50 species of perciform fishes in- habiting tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, India, and Central Africa. The most recent revision of the group was done by LIEM (1963) who ordered the 15 genera into four families on the basis of 1) We are grateful to Drs H.

  • Species Composition and Invasion Risks of Alien Ornamental Freshwater
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people.

Volume 64, Issue 8 November, 2020 London Aquaria Society www.londonaquariasociety.com I Have a Monster in my Aquarium. What is it? www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=35468.0 A monster's moved itself into my house and I've not even shagged it. I have a small indoor heated aquarium which fits within a picture frame and hangs on the wall of my living room. The tank is about 2.5 foot long by about 18 inches high by about 2 or 3 inches deep and is fully enclosed in a wooden frame. It contains guppies and a lot of weed and snails. A couple of weeks ago I saw what I thought was a spider drowning, thrashing/swimming in the tank. I tried to fish it out but it buried itself in the gravel and I lost it. A few hours later I was amazed to see it sitting in the weed. Upon closer examination I could see it has six legs, clearly has a head, abdomen and thorax, has a laterally flattened body and it’s abdomen was pulsating, presumably to facilitate breathing. It was then about 10mm long but is now about 15. No fish seem to be disappearing and I have a number of baby guppies which are smaller than it is. But I suspect it is eating snails. I assume it is an insect larva and was probably introduced on the weed, possibly as an egg. But since it is a tropical tank I have no idea whether the weed is of native or foreign origin.
