Volume 64, Issue 8 November, 2020 London Aquaria Society www.londonaquariasociety.com I Have a Monster in my Aquarium. What is it? www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=35468.0 A monster's moved itself into my house and I've not even shagged it. I have a small indoor heated aquarium which fits within a picture frame and hangs on the wall of my living room. The tank is about 2.5 foot long by about 18 inches high by about 2 or 3 inches deep and is fully enclosed in a wooden frame. It contains guppies and a lot of weed and snails. A couple of weeks ago I saw what I thought was a spider drowning, thrashing/swimming in the tank. I tried to fish it out but it buried itself in the gravel and I lost it. A few hours later I was amazed to see it sitting in the weed. Upon closer examination I could see it has six legs, clearly has a head, abdomen and thorax, has a laterally flattened body and it’s abdomen was pulsating, presumably to facilitate breathing. It was then about 10mm long but is now about 15. No fish seem to be disappearing and I have a number of baby guppies which are smaller than it is. But I suspect it is eating snails. I assume it is an insect larva and was probably introduced on the weed, possibly as an egg. But since it is a tropical tank I have no idea whether the weed is of native or foreign origin.

  • (Siluriformes) Mitochondrial Genomics
Moreira et al. BMC Genomics (2017) 18:345 DOI 10.1186/s12864-017-3709-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Reducing the information gap on Loricarioidei (Siluriformes) mitochondrial genomics Daniel Andrade Moreira1,2, Paulo Andreas Buckup3, Carolina Furtado4, Adalberto Luis Val5, Renata Schama2 and Thiago Estevam Parente1,6* Abstract Background: The genetic diversity of Neotropical fish fauna is underrepresented in public databases. This distortion is evident for the order Siluriformes, in which the suborders Siluroidei and Loricarioidei share equivalent proportion of species, although far less is known about the genetics of the latter clade, endemic to the Neotropical Region. Recently, this information gap was evident in a study about the structural diversity of fish mitochondrial genomes, and hampered a precise chronological resolution of Siluriformes. It has also prevented molecular ecology investigations about these catfishes, their interactions with the environment, responses to anthropogenic changes and potential uses. Results: Using high-throughput sequencing, we provide the nearly complete mitochondrial genomes for 26 Loricariidae and one Callichthyidae species. Structural features were highly conserved. A notable exception was identified in the monophyletic clade comprising species of the Hemiancistrus, Hypostomini and Peckoltia-clades, a ~60 nucleotide-long deletion encompassing the seven nucleotides at the 3′ end of the Conserved Sequence Block (CSB) D of the control region. The expression of mitochondrial genes followed the usual punctuation pattern. Heteroplasmic sites were identified in most species. The retrieved phylogeny strongly corroborates the currently accepted tree, although bringing to debate the relationship between Schizolecis guntheri and Pareiorhaphis garbei, and highlighting the low genetic variability within the Peckoltia-clade, an eco-morphologically diverse and taxonomically problematic group.

  • Molecular Phylogeny and Biogeography of Percocypris (Cyprinidae, Teleostei)
Molecular Phylogeny and Biogeography of Percocypris (Cyprinidae, Teleostei) Mo Wang1,2, Jun-Xing Yang1*, Xiao-Yong Chen1* 1 State Key Laboratory of Genetic Resources and Evolution, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, Yunnan, China, 2 University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China Abstract Fierce predatory freshwater fishes, the species of Percocypris (Cyprinidae, Teleostei) inhabit large rivers or lakes, and have a specific distribution pattern. Only a single species or subspecies occurs in each large-scale drainage basin of the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau. In this study, the molecular phylogenetic relationships for all but one of the described subspecies/species of Percocypris were investigated based on three mitochondrial genes (16S; COI; Cyt b) and one nuclear marker (Rag2). The results of Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses show that Percocypris is a strongly supported monophyletic group and that it is the sister group of Schizothorax. Combined with analyses of morphological characters, our results suggest that Percocypris needs to be reclassified, and we propose that six species be recognized, with corresponding distributions in five main drainages (including one lake). In addition, based on the results of the estimation of divergence times and ancestral drainages, we hypothesize that Percocypris likely originated in the early Miocene from a paleo-connected drainage system containing the contemporary main drainages of the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau. This study suggests that vicariance (due to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau modifying the large-scale morphologies of drainage basins in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau) has played an important role in the speciation of the genus. Furthermore, external morphological characters (such as the length of the fins) and an internal trait (the position of pterygiophore) appear to be correlated with different habitats in rivers and the lake.

[email protected] 3 Coordinador Programa Ecosistemas de Agua Dulce WWF Colombia. Calle 61 No 3 A 26, Bogota D.C, Colombia. [email protected] Abstract Data derived from the literature supplemented by examination of specimens in collections show that 1435 species of native fishes live in the freshwaters of Colombia. These species represent 14 orders and 47 families. Orders with the largest numbers of species in the Colombian continental ichthyofauna are the Characiformes (637 species), Siluriformes (524 species), Perciformes (124 species), and Gymnotiformes (74 species), with the remaining 10 orders having from 1 to 35 species. At the family level, the Characidae has the greatest number of species (399 species), with this followed by the Loricariidae (166 species), Cichlidae (114 species), Pimelodidae (54 species), and Trichomycteridae (54 species); the remaining 42 families having 1 to 52 species. Present data indicate that 311 of the species occur solely at locations within Colombia. Continued descriptions of new species from the continental waters of Colombia demonstrate that the present total underestimates the species-level diversity of the ichthyofauna.

  • Comparable Ages for the Independent Origins of Electrogenesis in African and South American Weakly Electric Fishes
Comparable Ages for the Independent Origins of Electrogenesis in African and South American Weakly Electric Fishes Se´bastien Lavoue´ 1,2*, Masaki Miya3, Matthew E. Arnegard4, John P. Sullivan5, Carl D. Hopkins6, Mutsumi Nishida2 1 Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, 2 Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, The University of Tokyo, Chiba, Japan, 3 Department of Zoology, Natural History Museum & Institute, Chiba, Japan, 4 Human Biology Division, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington, United States of America, 5 Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates, Ithaca, New York, United States of America, 6 Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, United States of America Abstract One of the most remarkable examples of convergent evolution among vertebrates is illustrated by the independent origins of an active electric sense in South American and African weakly electric fishes, the Gymnotiformes and Mormyroidea, respectively. These groups independently evolved similar complex systems for object localization and communication via the generation and reception of weak electric fields. While good estimates of divergence times are critical to understanding the temporal context for the evolution and diversification of these two groups, their respective ages have been difficult to estimate due to the absence of an informative fossil record, use of strict molecular clock models in previous studies, and/or incomplete taxonomic sampling. Here, we examine the timing of the origins of the Gymnotiformes and the Mormyroidea using complete mitogenome sequences and a parametric Bayesian method for divergence time reconstruction. Under two different fossil-based calibration methods, we estimated similar ages for the independent origins of the Mormyroidea and Gymnotiformes.

  • Analysis of the Ornamental Fish Exports from the Amazon State, Brazil*
BOLETIM DO INSTITUTO DE PESCA ISSN 1678-2305 online version Scientific Article ANALYSIS OF THE ORNAMENTAL FISH EXPORTS FROM THE AMAZON STATE, BRAZIL* ABSTRACT The updated status of the ornamental fish trade from the Amazonas state was analyzed between Ivan de Azevedo TRIBUZY-NETO1 the years of 2006-2015 (IBAMA database). The trade of ornamental fish from Amazonas State mainly consists of wild species. A total of 142,552,253 specimens were exported during the studied Hélio BELTRÃO2* period. Sales plummeted since 2006 from 26,075,241 specimens exported to 2,729,846 specimens Zehev Schwartz BENZAKEN3 in 2015 (Jan-Jul). Between 2006 and 2015, a total of US$ 23.0 million in revenue was generated from fish exports destined to 35 countries. Germany, Taiwan, USA and Japan accounted for 75.5% of Kedma Cristine YAMAMOTO2 the volume and 76.7% of the value exported. During this time 375 species were exported, included Paracheirodon axelrodi, P. simulans, Hemigrammus bleheri, Otociclus affinis and O. hoppei that together represented 84.5% of exports. Thirty of them are not on the list of Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources - IBAMA species released for export, and six are currently on the list of endangered fauna of Brazil: Hopliancistrus tricornis, Leporacanthicus joselimai, Parancistrus nudiventris, Peckoltia compta, Scobinancistrus auratus and S. pariolispos. 1 Universidade Federal do Amazonas – UFAM, Laboratório The collection of this information can help producers, managers and environmentalists in the de Ictiologia – LABIC. • Master Quizbook 2
www.fbas.co.uk FOREWORD The Federation of British Aquatic Societies' publications provide a complete supporting service for Societies. FBAS Aquatalks & Videos are ideal substitutes for having a speaker in person, but even with further 'back-up' from the original Quizbook in times of unforeseen circumstances, Societies may well exhaust such standby resources. Here, then, is a second QUIZBOOK of aquatic questions (some in serious vein, others more lighthearted) to fill those evenings - either as straightfoward Quizzes in their own right or something to have - 'just in case.' The Federation is very grateful to AQUARIAN for making this book possible, and particularly indebted to Dave Goodwin , from Deal A.S. , who provided the material. It is hoped that his extensive labours in collecting and compiling questions will be rewarded by the entertainment (and certainly much further knowledge) gained by those searching for the right answers! © Federation British Aquatic Societies 1994 RCM C O N T E N T S HELPING HINTS page 3 TROPICAL SUBJECTS CYPRINIDS 6 CHARACINS 9 CICHLIDS 11 ANABANTIDS 15 KILLIFISH 17 CATFISH 19 LOACHES 23 LIVEBEARERS 25 MARINES 27 ANY OTHER SPECIES 30 COLDWATER SUBJECTS COLDWATER 34 GENERAL SUBJECTS DISEASES 40 PLANTS 42 WATER 44 COMMON NAMES 47 SCIENTIFIC NAMES 54 GENERAL KNOWLEDGE 60 TRUE OR FALSE ? 78 BRAINTEASERS 82 MEANINGS 87 ORIGINS & BELONGINGS 89 CONNECTIONS & DIFFERENCES 94 SHOWING & CLASSES 97 HELPING HINTS The difference between a Quiz evening for your own Society and one with a guest Society lies in strict discipline and an eye on the clock. Some Societies may have a 'buzzer' system with 'first-on-the-buzzer' winning the right to answer.
