Last month, April 2013, I did not. I know this caused a bit of consternation on the part of Klaus Steinhaus, the editor of Tank Talk, and he had to find another article to fill the space. As such, I offer both he and the readers of Tank Talk my sincere apologies and to make up for it, give you a double helping of The Year of the Catfish this month. – Derek P.S. Tustin) o you have that one fish species of fish that you have Agamyxis pectinifrons D an unbridled affinity for? That one special species that just strikes a chord with you that you want to keep no matter what? Perhaps something that you have kept every time the opportunity presents? I think we all have a small group of species that no matter how unattractive other aquarists may find them, we want to keep them. I think you all know by now my absolute fascination with rainbowfish, and the extent that I am willing to go to obtain certain species. Given that, you might be surprised to know that my “soft-spot species” isn’t a rainbowfish, but rather a catfish, specifically the White-Spotted Doradid, Agamyxis pectinifrons. (Or it actually might be… but I’ll get to that in a bit.) Agamyxis pectinifrons is a member of the Doradidae family. -

Alcalde, Beatriz Azanza, Daniel DeMiguel, and Jorge Morales Abstract.—Integration between phylogenetic systematics and paleontological data has proved to be an effective method for identifying periods that lack fossil evidence in the evolutionary history of clades. In this study we aim to analyze whether there is any correlation between various ecomorphological variables and the duration of these underrepresented portions of lineages, which we call ghost lineages for simplicity, in ruminants. Analyses within phylogenetic (Generalized Estimating Equations) and non-phylogenetic (ANOVAs and Pearson correlations) frameworks were performed on the whole phylogeny of this suborder of Cetartiodactyla (Mammalia). This is the first time ghost lineages are focused in this way. To test the robustness of our data, we compared the magnitude of ghost lineages among different continents and among phylogenies pruned at different ages (4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 Ma). Differences in mean ghost lineage were not significantly related to either geographic or temporal factors. Our results indicate that the proportion of the known fossil record in ruminants appears to be influenced by the preservation potential of the bone remains in different environments. A previous study indicated that Picea purpurea, a conifer in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), originated through HHS from P. likiangensis and P. wilsonii. To investigate this origin in more detail we analyzed transcriptome data for 114 individuals collected from 34 populations of the three Picea species from their core distributions in the QTP. Phylogenetic, principal component and admixture analyses of nuclear SNPs showed the species to be delimited genetically and that P. purpurea was admixed with approximately 60% of its ancestry derived from P. wilsonii and 40% from P. likiangensis. Coalescent simulations revealed the best-fitting model of origin involved formation of an intermediate hybrid lineage between P. likiangensis and P. -

BOESEMAN 1) Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden With one plate INTRODUCTION Fishes of the genus Macrones Duméril (= Mystus Scopoli), family Bagridae, are mainly distributed from Syria in the north-west, through Pakistan, Ceylon, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand and Malaya, to the East Indies. Thirty-eight species have been described in the genus, of which six are reported as occurring in China (Jayaram, 1966: 445). In an earlier communication (Jayaram, 1968: 294) it was surmised that the genus may not be found in China and that the six species described from that country be best left out of Chinese lists, or that they may be placed under the predominantly Chinese genus Pelteobagrus Bleeker. Through the kind courtesy and co-operation of Dr. Volker Mahnert, Geneva, Dr. P. Kähsbauer, Vienna and Dr. M.-L. Bauchot, Paris, it has been possible for the first author to examine the types of some of the Chinese species hitherto referred to Mystus. Their generic position and systematic status have been published elsewhere (Jayaram, 1974, 1977). It has been shown that, with the exception of two species, the other three are referable to Pelteobagrus and that even these two real Mystus species are only relicts, fastly disappearing from China. Effects of Deforestation on Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages in the Upper Xingu River Basin, Southeastern Amazonia

Our goal was to test the hypotheses that deforestation affects the abundance, richness, and taxonomic structure of headwater stream fish assemblages in the Upper Xingu River Basin, in Southeastern Amazonia. Standardized sampling surveys in replicated first order streams demonstrated that deforestation strongly influences fish assemblage structure. Deforested stream reaches had twice the fish abundance than reference stream reaches in primary forests. These differences in assemblage structure were largely driven by increases in the abundance of a handful of species, as no influence of deforestation on species richness was observed. Stream canopy cover was the strongest predictor of assemblage structure, possibly by a combination of direct and indirect effects on the provision of forest detritus, food resources, channel morphology, and micro-climate regulation. Given the dynamic nature of change in land cover and use in the region, this article is an important contribution to the understanding of the effects of deforestation on Amazonian stream fish, and their conservation. 375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions.
