Joint Research Conference of the Institute for Advanced Studies And the Israel Science Foundation Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance VISIBLE SOUNDS Interrelationships among Music, the Visual Arts and the Performing Arts Jerusalem February 21-25, 2010 Abstracts, Speakers and Performers Sunday, February 21 15:00-18:30: Feldman Building, Room 130, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Givat Ram Campus Greetings Prof Eliezer Rabinovici, Director, Institute for Advanced Studies, Jerusalem Prof. Arnon Zuckerman, President, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem Prof. Ilan Schul, President, The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance Prof. Menachem Zur, The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance 1 PHILOSOPHICAL MATTERS / Chairman: Yael Kaduri Lydia Goehr Ruth HaCohen Michal Grover-Friedlander Lydia Goehr Pictures at an Exhibition: On the Possibility of Musical Ekphrasis My lecture considers a range of related questions. My Mussorgskian title interestingly relates to what Hegel writes at the end of his Phänomenologie des Geistes regarding the relation between the experience of art and the acquisition of knowledge. By reference to a history extending from Antiquity to the present, I ask in what manner, if any, music relates to poetic images beyond traditional ideals of mimesis or musical accompaniment. Is musical ekphrasis more than musical mimesis? Is musical evocation more than imitation? I also consider whether it makes sense to distinguish ekphrasis by the art of music and musical ekphrasis, given how the concept of musicality extends beyond the musical medium. Finally, I ask whether it is possible for music to describe or evoke an image that exists, no longer exists, or never existed? In this matter, I pay specific attention to the curious reference to Wagner's reference to the non-existent painting of Albrecht Dürer, according to which David slew Goliath.

Time never seems to stand still at LIAF HQ, though sometimes we wish it did. Writing this introduction to the festival is like a sort-of taking stock for me. A time to reflect on the year that’s been. Moving LIAF two months later in the year (and into ‘festival season’ as everyone keeps telling me) is probably the biggest change for us this year. Out of late Summer and into early Autumn, where the nights are drawing in. Will that mean more people will be wanting to gather inside the warm, darkened spaces of the cinema? Let us see. We hope so, for once again we have scoured the globe and feasted on 2,300 + little animated gems from around the world in order to craft the festival that you see before your beady eyes. 277 films from 36 countries, and the usual broad mix of everything from scratch films, pinscreen, time-slice, live-action/animation hybrids, puppet, clay, drawn, scribbled and a whole lotta’ “how the hell have they done that?” films.

Those counting on a long-lasting upswing were forced to recognize that there is no reliable for- mula for attaining success. Public appeal from abroad stemmed less from local blockbusters than from independent films with powerful themes and form. There are indeed beacons of hope on the Swiss horizon, several films which should be taken seriously: for instance, Ursula Meier’s fiction film “Home”, which was short-listed for the Critics’ Week Grand Prix in Cannes; or Reto Caffi’s short film “Auf der Strecke”, which has already garnered numerous prizes, including the Student Oscar. The tradition of high-quality documentary films, whose aesthetic strongly influ- ences the fiction films being produced in this country, represents the particularly fertile basis on which Swiss filmmaking may thrive. When considering a breakthrough at the opening of the most prestigious festivals, it is worth recalling the time when Swiss film productions shone on the international scene and names of directors were engraved forever in the vie- wers’ minds.

Welcome On behalf of the Vice Chancellor, I’m delighted to welcome all ‘Beyond the Frame’ conference delegates to Canterbury Christ Church University, hosted by the School of Media, Art & Design (Faculty of Arts & Humanities). The Faculty combines excellence in research and teaching and learning: all programmes of study are research led, focused on employability and student oriented. Colleagues from across the Faculty contributed to the REF 2014 with 90% of the Faculty’s research recognised as world leading or internationally significant. For the School of Media, Art & Design, these teaching and learning and research contexts literally have animation at the heart of their ‘storyboards’ (no pun intended). The School brings industry and academia together to teach, to learn and to research the various forms of animation, producing graduates who have equal facility in practice and scholarship. I wish the conference every success over its three days as it grapples animatedly with the practice-scholarship nexus in animation.
