My Mussorgskian title interestingly relates to what Hegel writes at the end of his Phänomenologie des Geistes regarding the relation between the experience of art and the acquisition of knowledge. By reference to a history extending from Antiquity to the present, I ask in what manner, if any, music relates to poetic images beyond traditional ideals of mimesis or musical accompaniment. Is musical ekphrasis more than musical mimesis? Is musical evocation more than imitation? I also consider whether it makes sense to distinguish ekphrasis by the art of music and musical ekphrasis, given how the concept of musicality extends beyond the musical medium. Finally, I ask whether it is possible for music to describe or evoke an image that exists, no longer exists, or never existed? In this matter, I pay specific attention to the curious reference to Wagner's reference to the non-existent painting of Albrecht Dürer, according to which David slew Goliath. -

La floraison dorée des forsythias illumine les rues et les jardins de Côte-des-Neiges. C’est le signe que les premières fleurs sauvages commencent à éclore dans les sous-bois qui entourent l’Oratoire. L’érythrone d’Amérique est la première plante qu’identifia le frère Marie-Victorin, à 18 ans, à Saint-Jérôme. Sa découverte a été racontée par Robert Rumilly : « Il s’évertue, assis sur une pierre dans l’érablière du Collège, le livre [la Flore canadienne de Léon Provancher] ouvert sur les genoux. Vient à passer un habitant, France Bastien, la hache sur l'épaule : – Qu'est-ce que vous cherchez, mon Frère ? – Le nom de cet herbage à fleur jaune. Comment, vous connaissez pas ça ! Bénite ! C'est l'Ail-douce, mon Frère, c'est l'Ail-douce. France Bastien s'éloigne en concluant que ce jeune Frère, c'est peut-être un bon religieux, mais qu'il n'est pas bien connaissant dans les racines. Le Frère Victorin court à la table des matières. “Ail doux” le renvoie à “Érythrone d'Amérique”[…] : “Bulbe de grosseur moyenne, profondément enfoncé dans le sol. Hampe nue, tendre, de 3 à 6 pouces de hauteur... Fleur pendante jaune, à segments oblongs...” C'est bien cela. Provancher ajoute ce court et gracieux commentaire : “Charmante petite fleur de nos bois, qui est la première à se montrer au printemps...” Le Frère Victorin est confus de son ignorance et ravi de sa découverte. -

DÉVOILEMENT DES FINALISTES AUX PRIX IRIS 2021 COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE Pour diffusion immédiate Montréal, le 26 avril 2021 – Québec Cinéma a dévoilé aujourd’hui les finalistes aux prix Iris 2021 en compagnie de Geneviève Schmidt, animatrice du Gala Québec Cinéma, et de Didier Lucien, animateur du Gala Artisans. La 22e édition du Gala Québec Cinéma sera produite dans le respect des mesures sanitaires et diffusée en direct du Studio 42 de Radio-Canada le dimanche 6 juin à 20 h sur ICI TÉLÉ. Le Gala Artisans, pour sa 6e édition également produite dans le respect des mesures sanitaires, sera diffusé en direct de la salle Ausgang Plaza le jeudi 3 juin à 20 h sur ICI ARTV. Ce sont 26 longs métrages de fiction, 26 longs métrages documentaires, 36 courts métrages de fiction, 29 courts métrages documentaires et 16 courts métrages d’animation qui ont été évalués au cours des dernières semaines, pour un total de 215 finalistes. Deux nouveaux Iris s’ajoutent cette année, les catégories Meilleure musique originale | Film documentaire et Meilleur court métrage | Documentaire, pour un total de 30 Iris remis. « Les films québécois sortis dans la dernière année ont réussi à briller et à susciter un bel engouement malgré la période très difficile vécue par l’industrie cinématographique. La qualité des œuvres présentées cette année mérite d’être soulignée et célébrée en grand. Alors que nous travaillons tous ensemble pour continuer à offrir de grands films dans nos salles de cinéma, ce Gala 2021 est d’autant plus essentiel pour valoriser l’importance de notre culture et de nos talents. -

Time never seems to stand still at LIAF HQ, though sometimes we wish it did. Writing this introduction to the festival is like a sort-of taking stock for me. A time to reflect on the year that’s been. Moving LIAF two months later in the year (and into ‘festival season’ as everyone keeps telling me) is probably the biggest change for us this year. Out of late Summer and into early Autumn, where the nights are drawing in. Will that mean more people will be wanting to gather inside the warm, darkened spaces of the cinema? Let us see. We hope so, for once again we have scoured the globe and feasted on 2,300 + little animated gems from around the world in order to craft the festival that you see before your beady eyes. 277 films from 36 countries, and the usual broad mix of everything from scratch films, pinscreen, time-slice, live-action/animation hybrids, puppet, clay, drawn, scribbled and a whole lotta’ “how the hell have they done that?” films.
