“It’s really not that big of a deal,” said Curtis Dixon, a second-year NAIT student. “Most of the places that people smoked weren’t on the NAIT campus anyway, and if it was, they have to walk an extra 10 feet. It hasn’t changed anything so I don’t really see the point, but it doesn’t bother me.” I asked Curtis if this would change for him in the winter, and he replied, “I don’t plan on being a smoker in the winter, so I’m not concerned.” MacKENZIE MARSHALL Other students echoed Curtis’s statements. All mation: [email protected] Thursday, October 1, 2009 The Nugget 5 opinion — Editorial — Elevating our manners very day at eight in the morning the Business Etower fills with students. For those of you that don’t know, the Business tower has nine different floors, includ- ing the basement. As you can Chris Carmichael-POWELL imagine, this creates a lot of Editor-in-Chief congestion on the four eleva- tors that are available. This brings me to the topic of this week’s editorial, elevator etiquette. I don’t understand why people find the need to take the elevator up one or two floors. Really, do you think that’s necessary? Just in case you’re unsure of the correct answer to this question, let me help you out – no, it’s not necessary. One floor in the Business tower consists of 24 steps – are you going to tell me you can’t walk up 24 steps to the next floor? I’m sorry, but that’s sad. In a 2004 report, Statistics Canada stated that 23.1 per cent of Canadians over the age of 18 are obese. Yes that’s right, obese. Not a little large, not plump, not hefty … obese. That’s an estimated 5.5 mil- lion adults. It gets worse. In addition to the 5.5 million obese Canadians, there are another 8.6 million Canadians that are overweight, that’s 36.1 per cent. That means 59.2 per cent of people in this country were overweight in some form or another in 2004. Perhaps walking up a few flights of stairs will do more help than harm. Are you kidding me? What’s even more frustrating than people using the elevator to go up one or two floors (and personally I think you should take the stairs unless you’re going more than five floors), are the people who take the elevator to go down a few floors instead of taking the stairs. Are you kidding me? Walking down stairs is nothing more than calculated falling. No exercise is needed. All you have to do is place one foot in front of the other, and I would argue it might even be easier than walking in a straight line. This is the prime example of being lazy, and we know where laziness gets us as a country (if you’re not sure, please see the stats above). I must admit, there are times when taking the elevator seems like the only option. Perhaps your leg hurts, or you’re sick. Maybe you take the stairs every other day and today you deserve a break. Fine, I understand, I’ve done it myself, but if the elevator is so full that if you get on, it requires touching another per- son, it means don’t get on, the elevator’s full. When you squeeze yourself onto the obviously full elevator, you’re in my bubble. Get out. Your views are important Please let me get off We want to hear from you! Training Day hits

the mark Team Balls Deep Club Training Day was a great success, 93 people came together at the Nest in a morning session where they learned the ropes, asked ques- tions and set their sights on the year. We were pleased to present to a keen and creative group of people. Stu- dents learned what it takes to start a club, put on activities, acquire fund- ing and get involved to give back to the NAIT community. Highlights included an awe- some breakfast and lunch served by the Nest, a risk management exer- cise ... did I mention we had a lot of creative minds ... and then the after- noon teambuilding event of paintball. Those that participated in paintball had a great time, building camarade- rie and proudly sporting some welts. Thursday, October 1, 2009 The Nugget 19 20 The Nugget Thursday, October 1, 2009
