I'd say thank you for reading, but really I say thank you for writing. In the end, I have just collected and saved what everybody else has to say about the Replacements. I started because I wanted to hear what everyone else had to say and what memories they had of that band that I loved, from everywhere. So for this 100th issue, I asked 1024 Replacements fans all the questions you´d ask if you met for ten minutes and talked about their favorite band. People who hear the Replacements and just hear the sound of a loose, raucous bar band don't get why this group and its songs are held in such reverence in such a unique way. No matter which album you listen to, there is the spirit, the great songs, the guitar anthems, the colorful personalities, the legend itself of the band that could simultaneously be brilliant and a shambles and whose songs could make you simultaneously laugh and cry. The Replacements are a great story in how they failed at whatever hopes for mainstream success they pursued in a self- sabotaging way, only to reunite two decades later for a little over 30 shows only to become larger than ever and finally achieve the national acclaim they never had. But after so far reading 24 years´ worth of fans´ thoughts, stories and letters, I can sum up what I've seen why people love this band like no other: because when they listen to the Replacements, they feel understood. And if you're reading this, then I probably don't need to explain it any more. Even though I have heard every Replacements song enough times that I could recite them, this electric form of a fan ´zine is both about and is for the fans. And it continues because one of the most interesting things about the Replacements are the fans themselves. Color Me Obsessed didn´t need to interview a single member of the band to tell the story of why The Replacements were so great, and the stories in this issue show why. And if one day twenty years from now, some kid wants to know what it was like seeing the Replacements with Bob Stinson during the tour for Tim, there is a place where they can read about it, long after the memory had faded and maybe even after we have gone. So here are ninety thousand words: over a thousand fans´ first albums, favorite albums, favorite songs, stories of how they got into the band, when they saw them, and anything else they had to say. It´s the story of how the Replacements touched so many people that is just as interesting as the story of the band itself. After months putting this together, it has been like reading a page each from of a thousand life stories. Maybe that sounds silly, but see for yourself. m@. 2 This survey was open to any Replacements fan from August to November 2016. It was sent to all subscribers of the //Skyway\\ and posted in several places, including: The Paul Westerberg Page www.paulwesterberg.com Paul Westerberg & The Replacements Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/537792766296918 We Love The ´Mats Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/welovethemats Quick links to the different sections of the survey: THE SURVEY HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR THE REPLACEMENTS? PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

Welcome to the 38th Annual Southwest Popular/American Culture Association Conference—we are so pleased that you have joined us. We look forward to sharing the week with the diverse group of scholars who join us here in Albuquerque this year. We have a full complement of panels this year, drawn from our 71 subject areas and ranging in topic from adaptation studies to zombie culture. We hope you will have opportunity to sample a variety of these offerings. In particular, we would like to highlight the Grateful Dead Scholars Caucus, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary at this year’s conference. You can locate the Grateful Dead in Grand Pavilion IV all week, where they will be holding 14 sessions over the course of four days. Join them as they consider the intersections between the band and cinema, philosophy, and literature, among other topics. To further commemorate this anniversary, David Gans will perform on Friday night with Albuquerque's own Dead cover band Let It Grow, at Low Spirits (2823 2nd Street NW). Doors open at 8:00pm, and the show starts at 9:00. Thank you, Nick Meriwether and all of the Caucus faithful, for your continued contributions to our organization. We are excited to announce our inaugural SWPACA film series, taking place on Thursday and Friday in Grand Pavilion I-II. Invited filmmakers will be screening their original work, with question-and-answer opportunities to follow.
