MARTS 2019 PUMPEHUSET The Lemonheads’ frontmand, Evan Dando, har en besynderlig evne til at gøre et nummer til sit eget. Han vil kunne få en takeaway-ordre over telefonen til at lyde som en hjerteskærende sang der ville passe ind på enhver bar. Hans følsomme, modne, vokal har gjort ham til en af de store udtryksfulde sangere. The Lemonheads hylder helte som Nick Cave, The Bevis Frond, Yo La Tengo, Lucinda Williams og Paul Westerberg, når de fremfører deres unikke covernumre. Det er næsten 10 år siden The Lemonheads pludselig satte tingene på hold, efter udgivelsen af deres niende album ’Varshons’, der var livlig samling covernumre som fik en meget flot modtagelse. Evan Dandos, evne til at ”twang” med sin vokal fik covernumrene på ’Varshons’ til at lyde som en gammel jukebox og denne formel bliver ført videre på bandets kommende album, ’Varshons II’. THAT AIN’T BAD A ZINE DEDICATED TO SYDNEY INDIE POP FROM THE EARLY 90’S BY ANDY PAINE INTROduction In the late 1980's and early 1990's, a group of bands emerged from Sydney who all played fuzzy distorted guitars juxtaposed with poppy melodies and harmonies. They released some wonderful music, had a brief period of remarkable mainstream success, and then faded from the memory of Australia's 'alternative' music world. I was too young to catch any of this music the first time around – by the time I heard any of these bands the 90’s were well and truly over. It's hard to say how I first heard or heard about the bands in this zine. As a teenage music nerd I devoured the history of music like a mechanical harvester ploughing through a field of vegetables - rarely pausing to stop and think, somethings were discarded, some kept with you. I discovered music in a haphazard way, not helped by living in a country town where there were few others who shared my passion for obscure bands and scenes. The internet was an incredible resource, but it was different back then too. There was no wikipedia, no youtube, no streaming, and slow dial-up speeds. Besides the net, the main ways my teenage self had access to alternative music was triple j and Saturday nights spent staying up watching guest programmers on rage. It was probably a mixture of all these that led to me discovering what I am, for the purposes of this zine, lumping together as "early 90's Sydney indie pop".

I'd say thank you for reading, but really I say thank you for writing. In the end, I have just collected and saved what everybody else has to say about the Replacements. I started because I wanted to hear what everyone else had to say and what memories they had of that band that I loved, from everywhere. So for this 100th issue, I asked 1024 Replacements fans all the questions you´d ask if you met for ten minutes and talked about their favorite band. People who hear the Replacements and just hear the sound of a loose, raucous bar band don't get why this group and its songs are held in such reverence in such a unique way. No matter which album you listen to, there is the spirit, the great songs, the guitar anthems, the colorful personalities, the legend itself of the band that could simultaneously be brilliant and a shambles and whose songs could make you simultaneously laugh and cry. The Replacements are a great story in how they failed at whatever hopes for mainstream success they pursued in a self- sabotaging way, only to reunite two decades later for a little over 30 shows only to become larger than ever and finally achieve the national acclaim they never had.
