The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh
The Heart of Rock and Soul by Dave Marsh 20 BE MY BABY, The Ronettes Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 116 1963 Billboard: #2 DA DOO RON RON, The Crystals Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 112 1963 Billboard: #3 CHRISTMAS (BABY PLEASE COME HOME), Darlene Love Produced by Phil Spector; written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry Philles 119 1963 Did not make pop charts To hear folks talk, Phil Spector made music out of a solitary vision. But the evidence of his greatest hits insists that he was heavily dependent on a variety of assistance. Which makes sense: Record making is fundamentally collaborative. Spector associates like engineer Larry Levine, arranger Jack Nitzsche, and husband-wife songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were simply indispensable to his teen-art concoctions. Besides them, every Spector track featured a dozen or more musicians. The constant standouts were' drummer Hal Blaine, one of the most inventive and prolific in rock history, and saxophonist Steve Douglas. Finally, there were vast differences among Spector's complement of singers. An important part of Spector's genius stemmed from his ability to recruit, organize, and provide leadership within such a musical community. Darlene Love (who also recorded for Spector with the Crystals and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans) ranks just beneath Aretha Franklin among female rock singers, and "Christmas" is her greatest record, though it was never a hit. (The track probably achieved its greatest notice in the mid-eighties, when it was used over the opening credits of Joe Dante's film, Gremlins.) Spector's Wall of Sound, with its continuously thundering horns and strings, never seemed more massive than it does here. -

Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck
Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Low Fidelity – Ready to POP(s) One of my favorite new spots in the city is POP. POP is an “emporium of popular culture” that just has the feel of strolling in and out of decades. I guess one could call it a thrift/antique shop, but to me it’s just a place with a lot of awesome shit. In addition to the shop, POP has a separate room for a gallery/performance space to host events like Low Fidelity. Low Fidelity will have all kinds of cool stuff happening with an exhibition of the works of Bobby Grossman, Doom Destiny collaboration with Shepard Fairey, and a performance by Mr. Buster Poindexter himself – David Johansen. Johansen, who should be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for fronting the seminal and hugely influential New York Dolls, is a reason to go. Johansen will be accompanied by Rhode Island Hall of Famer Mark Cutler on guitar in what promises to be a special treat of an evening. Don’t miss out on the night that Low Fidelity POP-ed in Providence. Low Fidelity takes place at POP on 219 W Park St. in Providence on October 7. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased here: stores.emporiumofpopularculture.com/low-fidelity- performance-by-david-johansen-exhibition-by-bobby-grossman-doom-destiny-collaboration-with-shepard- fairey. The event will run from 6 – 11pm. Black Pussy Stoner rock goliaths Black Pussy take over the Café at The Parlor to kick off Columbus Day Weekend. -

Rhino Reissues the Ramones' First Four Albums
2011-07-11 09:13 CEST Rhino Reissues The Ramones’ First Four Albums NOW I WANNA SNIFF SOME WAX Rhino Reissues The Ramones’ First Four Albums Both Versions Available July 19 Hey, ho, let’s go. Rhino celebrates the Ramones’ indelible musical legacy with reissues of the pioneering group’s first four albums on 180-gram vinyl. Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket To Russia and Road To Ruin look amazing and come in accurate reproductions of the original packaging. More importantly, the records sound magnificent and were made using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. For these releases, Rhino will – for the first time ever on vinyl – reissue the first pressing of Leave Home, which includes “Carbona Not Glue,” a track that was replaced with “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” on all subsequent pressings. Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone. The original line-up – along with Marky Ramone who joined in 1978 – helped blaze a trail more than 30 years ago with this classic four-album run. It’s hard to overstate how influential the group’s signature sound – minimalist rock played at maximum volume – was at the time, and still is today. These four landmark albums – Ramones (1976), Leave Home (1977), Rocket To Russia (1977) and Road to Ruin (1978) – contain such unforgettable songs as: “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Sheena Is Punk Rocker,” “Beat On The Brat,” “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue,” “Pinhead,” “Rockaway Beach” and “I Wanna Be Sedated.” RAMONES Side One Side Two 1. “Blitzkrieg Bop” 1. “Loudmouth” 2. “Beat On The Brat” 2. -

By Ariana Bowe Thesis Advisers: Professor Justin Patch May 2020 Bowe 2 Project Statement In my project, I will explore the New York City venue CBGB as one of the catalysts behind the rise of punk subculture in the 1970s. In a broader sense, I argue that punk is defined by a specific local space that facilitated a network of people (the subculture’s community), the concepts of DIY and bricolage, and zines. Within New York City, the locality of the punk subculture, ideas and materials were communicated via a DIY micro-medium called zines. -
What Is Happy Powys' Big Secret?
What is happy Powys' big secret? Carl Yapp BBC News website Plenty to smile about - Powys is rated the happiest place in the UK, according to a survey Powys is officially the happiest place in the UK, but what is its secret and is it really all it's cracked up to be? After all, the county's transport links and the lack of broadband and mobile phone coverage are regularly lambasted by frustrated residents. However, the people I spoke to in the towns of Llanfair Caereinion and Machynlleth didn't seem to care...much. Musician Ian Gomm exchanged the hustle and bustle of London for sleepy Llanfair, near Welshpool, 33 years ago. Part of cult rock band Brinsley Schwarz, he moved with his family to Powys when the group spilt in 1975. During his time with Brinsley Schwarz, he toured with Paul McCartney and Wings and later during a solo career he formed part of the bill during Dire Straits' first US tour. Since then, he joked, he had been forced to endure Powys' poor transport links, TV reception, mobile phone coverage, the lack of broadband, post offices closing and threats to the county's community hospitals. But despite all the drawbacks he said the county was a wonderful place to live. He added: "Shortly after moving to Powys our friends in London would say, 'What's it like where you live?' "We would say: 'It's horrible, stay In some ways the drawbacks add to the area's away' because we didn't want charm and that's why some people move here anyone to know how peaceful and relaxing it was in comparison to Ian Gomm, musician the rat race in London.
