Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Low Fidelity – Ready to POP(s) One of my favorite new spots in the city is POP. POP is an “emporium of popular culture” that just has the feel of strolling in and out of decades. I guess one could call it a thrift/antique shop, but to me it’s just a place with a lot of awesome shit. In addition to the shop, POP has a separate room for a gallery/performance space to host events like Low Fidelity. Low Fidelity will have all kinds of cool stuff happening with an exhibition of the works of Bobby Grossman, Doom Destiny collaboration with Shepard Fairey, and a performance by Mr. Buster Poindexter himself – David Johansen. Johansen, who should be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for fronting the seminal and hugely influential New York Dolls, is a reason to go. Johansen will be accompanied by Rhode Island Hall of Famer Mark Cutler on guitar in what promises to be a special treat of an evening. Don’t miss out on the night that Low Fidelity POP-ed in Providence. Low Fidelity takes place at POP on 219 W Park St. in Providence on October 7. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased here: stores.emporiumofpopularculture.com/low-fidelity- performance-by-david-johansen-exhibition-by-bobby-grossman-doom-destiny-collaboration-with-shepard- fairey. The event will run from 6 – 11pm. Black Pussy Stoner rock goliaths Black Pussy take over the Café at The Parlor to kick off Columbus Day Weekend. If you love spacey fuzz-ridden psychedelic freak-out jams like I do, this is the place to be. Black Pussy mixes their own whammer jammers in with some choice covers to make it a party. Plus the next day, what is a cooler answer to the “What did you do last night” question than “Black Pussy”? Black Pussy and Sweet Heat rock the Café at The Parlor in Newport on October 7. The Silks The Silks train keeps on rollin’ and will be making a homecoming stop in Providence to let loose with lowdown and dirty early ’70s casino rock boogie. The Silks have a new album titled Turn Me On that you should pick up if you haven’t already gotten hip to it. The roots of The Silks, like many of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands, is the blues, but The Silks take it into the chop shop and buffer it up adding a slant of early ’70s English rock like Faces and Stones with a touch of Graham Parsons. Live The Silks tend to blow the roof off joints, so if anyone has any leads on how to clone one’s self to hit all three of these shows I’ve mentioned, hit me up at the email at the bottom of this column. The Silks, Gleasons Drift, and William Matheny rock Firehouse 13 on October 7. Sgt. Baker and the Clones – Self-titled I had been hearing rumors of this album from Sgt. Baker and the Clones for well over a year, and I eventually shrugged it off as an urban myth. When I finally got my hands on the biscuit, I could see why there was a delay as Sgt. Mike Baker had been working like a madman. In addition to writing or co- writing all the songs, doing vocals and guitars, Sgt. Baker played bass on half the album as well as piano. In addition, there are some heavy hitters on here like engineer George Dussault on guitar and AJ Faria on trombone. The opening tracks “Atlas” and “DMT” are very much in the vein of Alice in Chains meets the members of Soundgarden to play Skee ball in a rundown arcade that happens to have an open mic night. “Flesh Puppets” is one of the best jams here for juxtaposition of a lounge rock groove over a snarly vocal. My favorite here is “Petty Dollar,” which has a bit of a ska groove on the verse combined with a “Heaven Besides You” style chorus that features Consuelo’s Revenge’s Amanda Salemi. Salemi duets with Baker on the closing “Trouble” that has kind of a blues boogie feel complete with strings and a soaring chorus. I like this disc more with each listen as Sgt Baker and the Clones have really tapped some sonic black magic. Here’s hoping this album one day finds its way on vinyl because it has some of the sickest cover art around. Sgt. Baker and the Clones celebrate their album release with a show with Consuelo’s Revenge, Brainfruit, and Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band at the Parlour in Providence on October 8. Bobby Rush – Porcupine Meat Although it probably sometimes seems like all I listen to is old school punk rock and ’80s and ’90s indie rock, I do love the blues. Especially old-style Chicago blues that has a swing to it. So I was particularly stoked to recently discover Bobby Rush in advance of his appearance in Woonsocket. Rush has a new album called Porcupine Meat that is just an all-around party record. Rush fuses funk and blues on cuts like “I Don’t Want Nobody Hanging Around” and “Catfish Stew” that is sure to get the dance floor bangin’. If your Wednesdays have been lagging like mine have, I suggest getting out to Chan’s for some mid-week raging. Bobby Rush brings the blues to Chan’s in Woonsocket on October 12. • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

  • New York Dolls: Lookin' Fine on Television One of the Reasons
http://moviecitynews.com/2011/11/the-dvd-wrapup-super-8-spy-kids-4-devils-double-sarahs-key-family-tree-trigger- helldriver/ New York Dolls: Lookin’ Fine on Television One of the reasons crusty old rock-’n’-roll journalists take the Hall of Fame less than seriously is the nominating committee’s tendency to honor performers whose ability to sell records trumps innovation, sacrifice and influence. Some musicians and singers have been inducted several times, while others are only considered after the uproar gets too loud to ignore. The fact that such mainstream entertainers as Billy Joel are members and not hard- core acts like the New York Dolls demands loud debate. Watch “Lookin’ Fine on Television” and I think you’ll see the case to be made for the Dolls. Directly influenced by the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and the Faces, the Stooges and MC5, the Dolls may have been the first American band to embrace Britain’s emerging Glam Rock and Punk movements and convincing suburban teenagers that boys have the same right to wear makeup and tease their hair as their girlfriends. Among the bands the Dolls influenced were Alice Cooper, Kiss, Sex Pistols, Motley Crue, the Ramones, Guns N Roses, Poison, R.E.M., Aerosmith and Clash. David Johansen was able to survive by morphing into the persona of lounge lizard Buster Poindexter and making songs for hipper elements among the disco crowd. Filmmakers Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck have compiled clips from the band’s formative years in L.A. and N.Y.C., as well as vintage interviews.

  • Audiophile Recording Issue 15
High-fidelity audiophile recording David Johansen & The Harry Smiths What does an Australian recording engineer, a small blues ensemble, and the front- man for a ‘70s glam/punk band have in common? And who the hell is Harry Smith? Greg Simmons finds out… very self-respecting sound engineer should own a couple of high fidelity audiophile recordings. Apart from their intrinsic musical value, they serve as good reality checks and provide welcome relief from the heavily Eprocessed sounds of popular music. They’re also ideal for evaluating audio equipment. But what makes a recording worthy of the title ‘audiophile’? Audiophile recordings are made to appeal to hi-fi enthusiasts and lovers of the natural sound of acoustic instruments. They are typically recorded direct-to- stereo in churches and similar acoustic spaces, and use a very simple but high quality signal path. The purest of all audiophile recordings are made with a single stereo microphone and recorded in one take with no EQ, compression, reverberation or additional process- ing. Beyond this ultra-purist ‘warts and all’ approach, it is not uncommon for an audiophile recording to be edited together from multiple takes, allowing a perfect performance to be created. It is also not unusual to see one or two spot microphones reinforcing the sound of Born to be… an engineer: Barry Wolifson created an audiophile weaker instruments, or giving them more focus in the recording with attitude. recording. A touch of reverb may be added if the recording is too dry, but compression and EQ are usually avoided whenever possible. In comparison to the heavily processed and exciting sounds of popular music, audiophile recordings tend to sound bland, uninteresting, and sometimes even sterile.

  • Vince Giordano Collection Finding Aid (PDF)
University of Missouri-Kansas City Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Born in Brooklyn, New York, Vince Giordano’s passion for music from the 1920s and 1930s, and the people that made it, began at age 5. He has amassed an amazing collection of over 60,000 band arrangements, 1920s and 1930s films, 78 recordings and jazz-age memorabilia. Giordano sought out and studied with important survivors from the period: Paul Whiteman’s hot arranger Bill Challis and drummer Chauncey Morehouse, as well as bassist Joe Tarto. Giordano’s passion, commitment to authenticity, and knowledge led him to create a sensational band of like-minded players, the Nighthawks. Giordano has single-handedly kept alive an amazing genre of American music that continues to spread the joy and pathos of an era that shaped our nation. A Grammy-winner and multi-instrumentalist, Giordano has played in New York nightclubs, appeared in films such as The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire; and performed concerts at the Town Hall, Jazz At Lincoln Center and the Newport Jazz Festival. Recording projects include soundtracks for the award- winning Boardwalk Empire with vocalists like Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, St. Vincent, Regina Spektor, Neko Case, Leon Redbone, Liza Minnelli, Catherine Russell, Rufus Wainwright and David Johansen. He and his band have also recorded for Todd Haynes' Carol, Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World, Tamara Jenkins’ The Savages, Robert DeNiro’s The Good Shepherd, Sam Mendes’ Away We Go, Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, and John Krokidas’ debut feature, Kill Your Darlings; along with HBO’s Grey Gardens and the miniseries Mildred Pierce.

  • Frankenstein 3000
[email protected] The Frankenstein monster: Bits. Pieces. The very definition of the whole being the sum of its parts. When Keith Roth envisioned fronting his own band after the rise and fall of his former band, Bad Biscut, he saw it almost as giving life to that which had become dormant: “As far as I was concerned, rock ‘n’ roll had been on life support since ‘79, and I wasn’t ready to pull the plug just yet. There was still something in there.” This new band would be a combination of his best friends and the best musicians he could find. Keith, an accomplished bass player, saw this project as a new beginning; a new opportunity to create what he’d always dreamed of: the perfect living, breathing rock ‘n’ roll machine, fueled by 70’s Punk & Glam, the British Invasion, 60’s Nuggets, the Detroit Revolution and Blaxploitation films. For Frankenstein 3000 , he took over guitar and vocal duties and sparked life into the creature with a dozen new songs and the ambition to achieve what his former band had come so close to, but failed to do: conquer the world. At first, Frankenstein 3000 was a revolving door project, with numerous NY/NJ metro area musicians passing through the ranks, but it wasn't until the current incarnation was solidified that Keith truly felt like he'd finally realized his vision. The area music scene is close-knit; some would even call it incestuous. Keith took that into account when looking for the perfect line-up for his new band.

  • Johansen V Sony Music Entertaiment[ED]
Johansen v. Sony Music Entertaiment Inc David JOHANSEN v. SONY MUSIC ENTERTAIMENT INC 2020 WL 1529442 (SDNY) Ramos, D.J.: David Johansen (“Johansen”), John Lyon (“Lyon”) and Paul Collins (“Collins”, and with Johansen and Lyon, “Plaintiffs”), bring this putative class action against Sony Music Entertainment (“Sony”) for declaratory judgment and copyright infringement. Pending before the Court is Sony’s motion to dismiss all claims. For the reasons discussed below, the motion is DENIED. I. BACKGROUND1 Johansen is an American singer, songwriter and actor, who began his career in the early 1970s. Johansen entered into a recording agreement with Sony in or about 1978. Pursuant to that agreement, Johansen released five albums, David Johansen, The David Johansen Group Live, In Style, Here Comes the Night, and Live It Up. On June 15, 2015, Johansen served a notice of termination on Sony: Additionally, a “Schedule A” as follows is attached to the notice: 1 Johansen v. Sony Music Entertaiment Inc The Copyright Office duly recorded Johansen’s notice on July 28, 2015. On June 14, 2017, two years after Johansen’s termination notice was sent, Sony sent a letter of refusal to Johansen. The letter cites, as reasons for its refusal, that: (a) “the Works are works made for hire,” and thus not subject to termination; (b) “the [n]otice does not adequately identify the specific grant David Johansen seeks to terminate, as the [n]otice broadly makes reference to all grants or transfers of copyright in and to certain sound recordings ‘including, without limitation to the grant dated in or about 1984 between the recording artist David Johansen and Blue Sky Records/CBS, Inc.’ ”; (c) Sony is unaware of any grant made in 1984, and “to the extent that any grant was made,” the grant was made before 1978 and thus 17 U.S.C.
